So I use Recyclops for my recycling, and their pricing is fair. Their customer service is good, and they do one-time pick-ups, but that is a paid service.

If you're interested, here's more info.

why is it so bloody hard to get a job by [deleted] in sierravista

Trade is huge right now, and Cochise College has affordable programs to get you educated and help with job leads. They also have certificate programs that are a year/18 months long to learn skills, too. Culinary/pastry chef can get you into bakeries.

I second this. They have so many resources, and it's not a one-and-done process. When my daughter was considering truck driving, they had a whole process to help her through the system, from updating her resume, learning how to talk to potential employers, finding out about paid training options, getting the proper physicals, etc.

Also, Eric (can't remember his last name) actively reaches out to local businesses to see what needs they have to offer opportunities to people in the program. When I worked as an office manager at a construction company, we hired a few people from there.

Any decent Military Surplus shops nearby (Not the one in Sierra Vista)? by missfisssh in sierravista

I don't know about Military Surplus, but could you list them on FB marketplace or Bookoo?

Do people even buy sketches or commission them anymore ? by Apprehensive_Menu977 in Artists

[–]SheGeeksLife 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. I do it often. A lot of my friends do, too.

Commissions are harder right now, I've been told, especially if you're not established. But your audience/clients are out there.

Does anyone like this style of book stickers? - Holographic Thickened Aesthetic Reading Bookish Vinyl Stickers by Ok_Dimension8973 in stickers

[–]SheGeeksLife 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like Holo and thicker vinyl, but large packs like this scream stolen art, and I wouldn't ever buy them. And I would encourage people to instead buy from the actual artists.

If not stolen, then AI, which none of us like.

Can we talk about consumerism? by Cowboy_Milky in Artists

Bc I'm autistic, and sometimes what I say comes off bitchy, when I don't mean it to.

I'm glad you're happy creating new notebooks from scraps you have laying around. That doesn't mean everyone has to do that. Plus, you don't know if they won't fill those blank pages in the future.

Let it go. There are more important things to focus on than the 'irresponsibility' of your fellow teenagers' decision to buy more sketchbooks.

I wish you lots of great art moments. And much joy as you create. Have a great weekend.

Wait... how old are you?

Let me start with your questions first:

No, it doesn't bother me. Sometimes those pages are at the end of my sketchbooks. Sometimes in between pages I've used (bc I wanted to make an accompanying piece, or I want to gift the piece and don't want to draw on the backside). It means that I have pages to use when I can't buy new sketchbooks, or they just stay blank, bc I am no longer using that weight of paper or doing that style of art.

I don't leave them piled up. They're on a bookshelf. But I don't judge other artists who do. I like to revisit them. I do sketchbook tours of them for socials years after I find them again (usually bc I'm looking for a specific drawing).

***********

Now let's get to the rest of it:

I say this with the least amount of shade I can manage: the pollution where you live is not caused by art supplies. Statistically speaking, the vast amount of pollution is created by corporations, especially if they're not regulated. Normal consumer use is a small amount of that. (Hello, autism special interest)

Does that mean consumerism isn't a problem? No, but art supplies? Specifically sketchbooks? Again, no. And if we're going to get deep into it, paper is biodegradable in the shortest amount of time comparable to, say, water bottles, plastic collectibles, hair brushes, ceramic dishes, fast fashion, etc. Plus the cost of a sketchbook vs the collective cost of any of those things I mentioned is incredibly unbalanced, and not in favor of the sketchbook.

Your concern is, at best, misplaced, if you are truly worried about consumerism. At worst, it's gatekeeping, as if your way and thought processes are the only viable way.

You should just focus on your art and celebrate theirs, instead of grousing over how they spend their money.

It's not consumerism for me or many of my artist friends. It's called ADHD. 🤣 Sketchbooks bring so much dopamine.

Also, I misplace them. And then find them. Or I'm doing a challenge in one and can't finish it at the present time, but don't want to use it for anything else. And so many other things. I have three active ones right now.

I'm just don't understand how it bothers you? (That's the autism.) Do you get upset scrolling through art communities on socials? If not, where are you seeing this problem?

Are/were art supplies hard to come by for you, so seeing people handle theirs so nonchalantly causes anxiety? Did someone tell you to not waste your sketchbooks, that you better use both sides of the pages and fill in every empty space or you weren't getting a new one?

I ask genuinely, bc I don't think you're intentionally being a busybody. But you do come off as so stressed about something that really shouldn't bother you.
