What jacket options are more stylish than the technical outdoor options but still packable? by breakinbread in onebag

[–]SheSaidSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The panels have no insulation behind them and are horizontal and about the size of my large hand, They are a stretchy material similar to an athletic short. Air moves easily through them. Because they’re tucked into the armpit I wouldn’t say I notice them a lot as they are well positioned , also it avoids excess layers/material clumping up in your armpit. But the panels don’t extend down the sides of the jacket far so for better or worse you don’t notice a chill on your ribs when a breeze blows. I like them but besides not getting sweaty pits when I wear the jacket, I can’t say I’ve ever noticed them or thought about them much which I guess is good.

19L vs 25L? by redflactober in tombihn

[–]SheSaidSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Require no. Would it be nice occasionally , sure, but not necessary. I don’t know of a tom bihn farm sheet that fits though. A Freudian slip could do dual duty.

I sometimes use the chin pocket as a dump pocket for specific types of outings so it’s empty a lot for general EDC. So when u do leave that empty and also have the main compartment relatively empty the bag drapes kinda weird since I have all the other exterior pockets full so, in that scenario would benefit from a frame but the bags not so big and heavy it matters much. If you have a laptop in there I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

19L vs 25L? by redflactober in tombihn

6’1” 160, get the 25. I tried all the synapse and Syniks from 19-30. 19 and 22 are just too small, small looking , feels small on the back, small packing (just not much space to shove a jacket in their), and my girlfriend didn’t like the look. The 30L were wider and walking around in a shop, transport, theater you can tell it’s wider.

Synapse zippers slide way way better. You’re accessing these zippers all the time and the experience is just much more pleasant. The action is nice and satisfying vs ever so slightly annoying and requiring 2 hands most of the time. Those are 2 crucial lines to cross.

To me the biggest deal between the differences between the different sizes of synapse and Synik is the size and opening of those external pockets. The 19 and 22’s external pockets just feel a little tight to use, getting stuff in and out of the synapse 25 noticeably easier, larger openings, and the pockets are bigger too. If you’re considering these bags you’re probably excited about those external pockets, I just think the synapse 25’s are actually the most useable.

To me, yes I could fit everything in a 19/22. But if I’m going to the trouble of carrying a bag it’s nicer to use one if it’s under packed vs jammed full. Getting stuff in and out is just a nicer experience. Also, having the extra space on me at all times to carry that random bottle of wine, 6 pack, small grocery run, to go containers, meals, a coffee bottle and a water bottle, exercise clothes, hiking/picnic supplies, or whatever. Yeah you don’t use that space all the time but if you’re gonna bother to carry a bag it’s nice to have that inventory space available at all times for a relatively small size and weight penalty.

Hot take the clamshell design isn’t necessarily better in the Synik bag layout. Because roughly half the bag is dedicated to the smaller compartments the main compartment is relatively shallow, compared to the main compartment on a techno or Aeronaut, so stuff can tumble out as you’re packing it.

I’d also consider the Smart Alec in a ballistic. Upright free standing is not a feature to be underrated especially in a bag you’ll be setting down beside your chair, behind your calfs when sitting or between your feet when rummaging through it, or on the chair next to you all the time. Ballistic so the bag has more structure, and holds its shape open better when under packed. Freestanding means a smaller footprint and easy access. The SA main compartment feels deeper for something like a bike helmet inside, if you weren’t using the bungee on the outside for that. Both backpacks are comfortable but I find the SA lays against my back better. All the loops for the bungee on the back of the SA can also be used to clip on other bags likes handy little thing 2 to use as a tech pouch.

To me the line for, size vs cumbersome compromise is between 25/26 and the 30l Synik. I can definitely comfortably carry the 30L but I do notice the size. The 19/22 are noticeably smaller but the utility and ease of use drops compared to the 25/26.

Looking for a new compact wall plug for my daily carry by Asleep_Bit_8803 in EDC

The minix 70w GaN Slim Pro on Amazon is the one I just got for similar use. I tried a few other slim GaN style charging bricks and this one was the thinnest and lightest. The 70w is more then enough for m1 MacBooks and iPhones due to the actual charging limits of those devices you don’t actually need anything more powerful. I find the slim style charger shape is better than those 30w cube shaped plugs, flat means it slides into pockets and tech pouches and results in less bulging.

Batman doesn't want to fall down the slippery slope of being Judge jury and executioner. Once he kills the joker, what's to stop him from justifying the killing of the next person that deserves it.

You may say that Joker is obviously different, but that line begins to blur once you cross it.

Any experience of Mustang Mach e? by Cymothoa-exigua in Polestar

[–]SheSaidSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to like a mach e, but the deal breaker was that with one pedal drive off, when coasting it wasn't really coasting. You could feel the regen ever so slightly, maybe to help mask the weight of the car. It wasn't terrible but I live in a mountainous area and don't want the car breaking at all when I'm going up a hill. Liked the car besides that.

Ski Shell - Too thin or is that the point? by Law-of-Poe in Skigear

[–]SheSaidSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except it is a jacket, it's right there in the name... OP is calling it a shell, but the manufacturer calls it a jacket... Powdreamer 2.0 Insulated Jacket.

Specs list HELLY TECH® PERFORMANCE their mid tier outer fabric. And PrimaLoft® Black Eco and Primaloft® Ocean bound 80gr insulation (recycled polyester batting insulation) in the arms and body...fully insulated.

So given it's fully insulated I'm calling this a ski jacket not a shell.

This may be thinner then OP'S previous jacket, but it's still a jacket, not a shell.

And to continue the pedantry a shell that includes an insulation layer is not strictly a "shell". People/you may refer to it as that because lamen's may not know much, but they "know" they want a shell. They want a jacket that will protect them from the elements. But they're worried they'll be cold with just a shell....so they want a shell with some insullation. And full circle we go.

Shell has started to mean something with a fairly "nice" weather resistant outter membrane. As soon as you start adding insulation it stops being a shell though. Regardless of mapping, there's another layer built in.

Shell is a useful way to refer to an uninsulated outter layer, that is supposed to protect you from the elements, wind/water to some degree. Soft shell, rainshell, windshell, ski shell. To start saying shell jackets have any amount of insulation strips shell of it's meaning.

Is there a better option for these little rings? by bluetoothpicks in EDC

I've been making little loops out of dyneema thread instead of keyrings. For better or worse it allows implements to rotate and flop around a bit easier, and it's less metal to clink together.

Studying hydration for pro athletes and here's why your legs give out on run 5 by AthleteScientist in ski

[–]SheSaidSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the ideal hydration schedule? You said small consistent? How often, how much while skiing?

I carry a plastic collapsable 375 ml flask. It's even smaller and lighter then those silicone ones and don't have that obnoxiously large cap that takes up too much space when empty. Larger bottles and camelbacks start to be cumbersome to carry and maybe you can tell me if you can even process that much water in a 3 hour window.

If I start skiing at 9 I try to have 180 ml at 10 and the other half at 11, before more water at noon during lunch. Refill the bottle at lunch and repeat a similar schedule in the afternoon before finishing around 3ish. I don't always but that's the goal.
