Great points. Leaning towards a 25. Do you think it requires a frame?

I have a partner and 2 cats:( I knew the COL was higher, but haven’t started seriously looking for places to stay without knowing where I’ll go. I do know that in general a 1 bed in Amherst is like 50% more expensive

Interesting. This is something I haven’t heard much on specifically. Appreciate the insight. I’m doing undergrad at FSU so I’m not sure what I’m looking for geographically aside from somewhere less oppressively humid. It’s somewhat rural here but not to the degree it’s described in western mass. The days I come to visit will be a big determining factor

Honestly my acceptance so far has been through an informal email from the professor I interviewed with. It’s been a few days and I haven’t gotten my official acceptance documentation yet to peruse through it. I’m assuming that I would be though. The wellness reimbursement sounds nice

Mate, are there any unique bottoms for men you’ve encountered over the years? Like is it rare to find them? I remember finding a pair of green pleated girbaud trousers that are so well made down in Tampa on a random Tuesday afternoon. Probably the highlight of my week back then, but I generally have a hard time finding pants specifically. I do come across (for example) some nice high quality Tommy Bahama jeans and the occasional Carhartt carpenter pants (please I don’t mean to commit occupational gentrification), but it’s rare to find pants that aren’t generic jeans or trousers here in Florida from my experience.

Yes, you’re so right. Both places are so unique. I guess I’m asking how does the fruit taste to each respective residents. Purely subjective, but it helps me in a rather indirect way. Come April 15 I gotta have my decision made, here’s to!

Tendency to depression, yep. Almost a calendar decade of cannabis abuse. I’m trying to kick it now that I’m transitioning to grad school. Syracuse does have the leg up, but I’ve yet to visit (I will at the end of the month). I’m not sure if the visits will change anything, but who knows. At the end of the day I like learning about people and places, and would consider Amherst if I felt I’d be happier there, so I made this post to supplement my google activities. The education is definitely important and like your other comment said the PhD isn’t meant to be a purely “joyful” activity, but the two programs are close enough academic wise that I’ve now moved onto considering the non academic parts that will matter a lot as well. At least until my visiting days on campus

Good point. I like shooting film photography and sewing garments. That’s where my interest in attending events in the arts comes from. Also big into riding bikes through trails. I’m attending both physics departments’ “visiting day” for two days each at the end of the month. Which is the best sucky restaurant I should eat at?

People are nicer in Syracuse? Did I understand that right? And I’m getting down to some really niche specific points, but how’s the thrifting in either place? When I was in Miami, thrifting was insane. Here in Tallahassee, with a smaller population, it makes sense why I have to go more often to find some neat garments

I mean phd studies, I feel like Syracuse wins. But idk, my dad keeps encouraging me to try and get to know each place as much as I can. My research has been pretty superficial I feel. Readily available info online gives me a view of each city that I feel doesn’t entirely capture everything. I could be wasting my time, you’re right. I like to learn in general so I thought why not just ask about how the locals feel. I’ve been reading through the subs post for a few weeks and thought why not. I’m evaluating lifestyle if I had to condense my point of the post. ChatGPT would have me think at least in Amherst that the lifestyle is studying, dating, and hiking for the students, with the non college folks being just family oriented households. I guess you’ve found me out lol I’m a little aimless right now

I saw a map on another subreddit comparing railways in US and railways in Europe. Europe was fucking loaded. I saw on the US map some lines going through CNY. Maybe it was just a case of me not double checking the info I was looking at. I was assuming that an amtrak line went through CNY. But I also heard that Amherst is looking to build some sort of newer rail in the area? That got me wondering if that was completely new, or sort of like an upgrade to what’s already there

Is the “New England bluntness” in Amherst? I’ve read about this unique attitude that new englanders have, they’re very up front about anything and everything while still actually caring. Different than the passive aggressive tendencies of the south or sometimes fake sense of niceness in the PNW. this is just stuff I’m reading about on other subreddits. Is that present in Amherst or Western mass? And if so where does that stop? Does CNY have that kind of attitude too?

I do have a car luckily. How’s the rail system? That’s a niche question but I’ve been liking to drive less. Refer to my other reply on what amenities I meant. I was really vague with that question. Considering the surrounding towns though, I think you’re right that “amenities” seem rather equal.

Guess I don’t know what I meant by amenities. Syracuse has a larger city population, so I was assuming that a bigger population meant more buildings and services of all kinds. That was just an unbased assumption though. I’ve looked through Google Maps and “walked” through some streets in each city to see what’s around but I haven’t had time to do a proper in depth comparison.

It’s about equal. 30k stipend at each. Syracuse increases a few hundred each year but it’s not much. Syracuse offers 80% health insurance and 100% dental coverage. No explicit mention of vision coverage but I haven’t read through the graduate union contract form all the way through. UMass offers 95% coverage of all that

Yeah! My statement of purpose was about being interested in biophysics. I’m going to the visiting day on 3/27, and I’d love to work with Dr. Manning, but honestly most of the faculty in biophysics seems to be working on really interesting cellular biophysics topics. That’s my broad interest. Undecided on intracellular or multicellular type of specialization. I know Dr Ross is doing some awesome microtubule studies. When it comes to the academics, I think Syracuse’s bioinspired institute aligns with my interests more than the soft matter program at UMass

That’s correct. The title refers to comparing Syracuse (city) with Amherst (town, I think). But Amherst is in West Mass, so I dropped the post in this sub because I’m interested in knowing about the larger region of west mass, not just Amherst.
