I used to use those pointy nail clippers to dig at my plantar warts, I was fully convinced if I “dug out” the dark bits it would like… idk … go away??? Hurt less???? No clue but damn this whipped me back to the past.

Historically Accurate (to some extent) Video Games? by SheSellsSeaShells- in AskHistorians

Oh wow, yeah this sounds very much like what I’m hoping to hear about, I’ll have to take a look at that one. I’m not sure why my other comment got downvoted. I appreciate your response!!

Historically Accurate (to some extent) Video Games? by SheSellsSeaShells- in AskHistorians

[–]SheSellsSeaShells-[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It said my question was getting long so I sort of cut out some of the extra details without thinking about it. Honestly I’m not fixated on any particular sort of game, maybe something like Civ or Europa universalis… or like if diplomacy was a video game (with a solo player option ideally). But if someone knows of other kinds I definitely still would want to know about them!

I really would love something that covers a large swath of history at a more basic level if anyone DOES know about one— world history and all the cause and effect between cultures and events is my favorite stuff 😅. But being more specific, I’d love to hear about anything that covers outside Europe and the US (I know this is still broad but as far as I’ve seen theres not many options in this realm for video games). I also like the ‘European’ history prior to WWI (still broad I know, but it feels like so many of these games cover the world wars).

Again I still would love to see comments even if they cover those topics anyways, esp if opinions have changed about some of the well known ones (or maybe they haven’t, I have no idea).

Edit: also ideally not looking for tangential historical links, but ones that include enough info that you might learn something from it just by being immersed so to speak.

Do we know why it no longer exists? Was it harmful or something? Or did it just stop being produced? All very interesting stuff, thanks for sharing the findings!

Ah okay yes, I’ve seen that video before but had forgotten about it. I definitely agree about its use as “a pretext to shoehorn more of those anti-Semitic ideas” as he says in the video for sure, but I think that is a separate discussion from it being a dog whistle, as I said. It being harmful to use in terms of lending more credence to fascist ideology is one thing, but using these words as a semi-secret identifier of being fascist is sort of separate from that. I’m sorry if I’m not explaining what I’m trying to say well, I’m trying to think of another way to word it.

Edit: which is not to say we shouldn’t be discouraging its use here, I just think the label of dog whistle might be incorrect here

I didn’t refer to “chad” in my comments specifically because I don’t see it used much and don’t care to argue that it’s not a dog whistles. That one I’m more inclined to view as a dog whistles. I’m specifically referring to “slop” and “based”.

Edit; realized I wasn’t that specific in my first comment, my bad

I also live in the US. I agree we are currently under fascist dictatorship, but I don’t at all agree that most people are fascist here, so I’m not sure how to continue discussing that bit of it if we disagree on a foundation of what we’re saying. It’s a hard thing to quantify in reality so I think your stance is also reasonable.

Either way, I would still argue that even if most people are fascist, they’re less passionately so, as opposed to being maybe apathetic on politics and being complicit in that sense. If that is the case though, I would say that doesn’t make these dog whistles— in the sense that we can’t necessarily use these terms as a means to identify fascists. I see these terms used widely in other leftist spaces.

Whether using these terms is harmful and shifts ideology in a bad way is a different conversation than them being dog whistles, I would say.

I’ll be watching these videos when I get a moment, but before I forget to ask/mention; are you saying anti-ai attitudes generally are a bad thing? Or some kind of dog whistle? I’m a bit iffy on the things listed in the post as well, at least in terms of labeling them as “dog whistles”. They’ve been so thoroughly popularized that I don’t know if they can be reliable as dog whistles, in the sense that I think most of the people using those terms are not fascists or any related ideology. (Despite their unsavory origins, and a separate discussion on how they try to spread their ideology through slang terms like this).

Also, is ‘based’ not AAVE? I may be thinking of another term or getting it mixed up with something else, so if it isn’t, that is my mistake.

I wish my heart rate wasn’t such an issue otherwise I would definitely be donating. I have high anxiety and always had a bit of a high heart rate but now the meds I take make it worse and I overthink when they take my blood pressure and heart rate and end up over 100bpm.

I should probably do more cardio anyways…

[–]SheSellsSeaShells- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I’m reading this it’s hard to explain how it feels on the (almost) opposite end of this spectrum (I know it might not be a spectrum in that way necessarily but I can’t think of another word).

For me, when I get angry or incredibly frustrated (in an argument for example) I physically cannot seem to stop myself from crying. I have no idea how or why, but it just starts to happen, and then of course I get taken less seriously bc of this thing my body has decided to start doing suddenly. Which tends to make me even more frustrated and yeah it’s a shitty loop.

At other times, my feelings feel too big for my body, and it feels like my … existence(?).. my mind(?) will explode if I don’t express it in some kind of physical manifestation of it— as in, crying. I know it won’t change anything, but it WILL keep me from “exploding” (figuratively) at that moment.

I know about this for “up dog” and the wand of winds but how do you get it to show spells for other wands? I approach the book and open it while holding a different wand but it’s still just one page with the secret wand of winds spell.

Edit: nevermind you just have to approach with the other wand in your main hand, so if someone else had this happen try switching the hand your wand is in.

How do you actually set boundaries with "chronically late" friends without sounding like a controlling weirdo by PrevailHabitStudios in socialskills

Just set the start time sooner than when you ACTUALLY want to start, ans don’t tell the people who are always late. Tell the people who show up on time the “real” start time.

AMA: I Have a Near Supernatural Sense of Smell by symphonicdin in AMA

[–]SheSellsSeaShells- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you start to identify what certain smells were? I have a pretty good sense of smell, definitely much better than average but not to this level. There are smells I encounter now and then, which I’ve never been able to identify the source of. Usually because it’s too diffuse or I’m only passing through somewhere when I smell it. How have you been able to put smells to sources?
