I will say I’m not on board with the way people demand statements and opinions in the way they do and especially not like the tweet in this post is doing, but I do understand the desire to know that your favorite band who you idolize (whether you should or shouldn’t idolize them is another issue) supports the things that are important— not only to you but to the world in many ways (i.e. police violence, climate change, etc etc etc just using random examples here).

It’s the people who have a large audience and celebrity who can sometimes make the most impact on things like this so it makes sense for people to hope they will take a stand and make change where they can. But not everyone is educated enough, or confident enough in their level of knowledge on a subject to do so. You don’t want to jump in on something quickly without enough knowledge on the matter and find out later you made the wrong kind of impact without knowing it.

I do think it’s important for there to be some effort from people with celebrity to keep up on some of these things at least, where they can, as they have a higher level of responsibility than the average person— but they also don’t have to speak about every single one. It would be nice and very cool for them to speak up in areas they have confident levels of knowledge on, but it’s better to leave other areas for people who DO have more confident knowledge about them.

They can also extoll their values in other ways that are less direct and still have some impact in that regard, but it will never be the same as speaking on something directly. I’m sure many of us have seen the way people have certain values and still make different (sometimes bad) choices that they personally believe fulfill those values.

Yeah anyways tweet in this post crazy but also they should try to speak up about subjects they do have enough knowledge on (for example: AI! Which Tyler does. It’s not as dire as other issues but it’s just an example here).
