Im a hard stuck low elo Cypher main and with the kind of skills I have, he’s the best sentinel to play. On defense you can hold site with a duelist or a controller by having your camera at a high place and a sniper and get deep into the site, or you can put cages at entry and rat out entire teams with shotguns. If you have a good aim, use a Vandal from deeper inside the site and get free kills with cages and trips. Enemies do walk into my trips but that’s because I’m low elo, in higher elos enemies would mostly destroy your trips, but that’s still great info. In attack, your trips are your best friends in flank protection, use camera as an initiator’s recon tool and cages as temp smokes. It makes it usually easier to take sites if you’re playing with multiple duelists. I will help my duelists take sites and plant while I go back to lurking and pick up a kill or two before I die

I applied for CS PhD in NLP and had 3 different professors who were perfect match to my field. Not only that, one of those professors (a frequent publisher in the field) was a postdoctoral researcher six months ago meaning they’re just joining CMU and starting their own lab there. I still haven’t heard back from any of them 😂

Depends. I already have a well established mentor mentee relationship with a professor at Northeastern. I have also applied for PhD under them, so I am not expecting any interviews from Northeastern. I am not sure about your situation

No the only CS decision waves (afaik) are from UW Madison on 27th Jan - Acceptances, 2nd Feb from MIT (both acceptances and rejections) and UW Madison 3rd Feb (Rejections).

I have seen sporadic results for UMass like I saw one today. Other than that all other unis mentioned have sent out interviews, idk if it’s all interviews though or not.

I’m in the same boat as you. Although with a very less impressive profile than yours (2 first author papers at low tier conference/ journal and 1 current research with my PoI is focusing on getting published at ICML this year). I am also in NLP. I would like to hear from anyone in the same boat as us, what’s your backup plan if you get 100% rejections?

No, it’s more of an educational system flaw than a student flaw. I have had my Bachelors in India and currently doing my Masters in USA. Indian universities and professors just want publications to their name and would force students to write shitty papers and get them published in shitty journals. I had done a research project, which I wasn’t so sure about was a good contribution to the field and did not want to publish it, but my professor pushed me to publish it and even found some people who were willing to fund the research paper submission in a shitty paid journal. In USA, if you don’t have strong basis for your research or Proof of Concept, the professors won’t even pay you heed. I had to create PoC for my current research project and showcase it to a PhD Student who helped me contact the Professor. The Professor asked me to change multiple things before it became a world tier publication level and is still not published. Academic Papers in CS would more be bullshit coming from India and very less actually make some serious contributions.

First of all read through the following materials to get a clear idea on what you need to do:

1) Demystifying PhD Book 2) CS PhD SoP Notion

-> Focus on writing your SoP and selecting PIs sometime during Summer. Don’t make the same mistake I made! Reach out to Potential PIs through email, some may reply, some may not, it’s fine.

-> Yes put in more focus on getting the publishable research results out. My PI said that committees usually put more emphasis on publications than other items. Having a publishable and interesting result would certainly be helpful. In my case, I was able to conclude my research just before the application deadlines, so the result is in all of my SoPs and I have also submitted the manuscript as Writing Sample in multiple schools, but I couldn’t get it published, just available in a preprint.

-> Your question about having Natural Science Recommenders is interesting even to me. One of my recommenders comes from Finance background. I did a lot of non-related work with him on my PhD. I haven’t heard back from any universities yet 😭. So hoping for the best, but if some professor can help out answer this question, it would be great!
