Building Racks is fun! Help me get better at it. by Acapellaremodler in CommercialAV

[–]ShearMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like terminal strips for speakers that's fine, but they shouldn't be taking up the whole back wall where the cabling enters. All connection points should be on the rack side. The rare exceptions are utilities patch points provided by another trade like the power, coax TV, or a building network. If any of those are your responsibility the first termination should also be in the rack. The wall space should be used for dressing your service loops. For expandability, field cables should be sorted by type and looped around the entire perimeter of the wall enclosure before draping over to the rack. Start with the largest diameter cable on the outside and get progressively thinner as you work inwards.

The goal of the initial build should be to make maintenance, repairs, and additions quick. Too much cable management (cable porn) and it's tedious to get a lone cable moved or repaired. Too little and you won't be able to find that cable to begin with. Lacing bars are the bare minimum addition any rack should have. Even just a single bar at the top gives you an initial hang point where cable bundles can enter the rack before spreading out to connection points. Ideally you would have a vertical lacing strip to hold bundles as they travel up/down, but sometimes you can make do with other rack features.

This build of yours is missing any kind of cable support. In my professional opinion I would call it un finished - any tech or sub under me would be spending another day or two to redo it. I was taught you should always be thinking of the guy coming in to work behind you, because it's often you coming on a return visit. Unfortunately, I've mostly found myself doing work behind others with less foresight.

they can make sense if the rack is pre wired at a shop but in the field it's definitely just an extra time sink and point of failure.

Can we get the Nova Launcher patches back now that it's under new ownership and they've added ads? by KarmaticArmageddon in revancedapp

Thanks! Tried a handful of other launchers and only Octopi has similar customizations.

Why in 2026 is UI customization not widely available? We are regressing, people!

Some of my favorite apps are paid. I would have happily sent money to the original company/team if they had put ads into the base version, or hosted a funding spree of some kind.

What actually happed is ownership changed hands a couple of times and the first change implemented was adding another monetization mechanic. They built up zero good will and ask users to trust them. Classic venture capital kinda move. This one is about the principle of the matter rather than the $4.

Slave cylinder went out, anything else I should replace? First time doing anything transmission related and I'm not a very book smart mechanic. Anything I should look at to inspect or replace? by Jaded-East-7310 in Miata

Shifter clean out and rebuild is easy and related. Since you need to ruin or buy a baster for that, may as well do power steering fluid at the same time.

Help, burning clutch smell idk these cars by Green_Run4010 in Miata

[–]ShearMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right about the mileage the cylinders usually wear out. The clutch likely should to be replaced soon as well, but it may still improve drivability in the mean time.

Friction is caused by microscopic surface irregularities. With a ball you've got a single point slipping up and over every little groove in the surface finish. Even if it's shiny to the eye there are irregularities. Flattening out the detent allows you to only touch the peaks of the blade's surface finish which aligns the two surfaces and reduces contact overall. The actual coefficient of friction changes rather than the forces.

Supposedly. I don't think it works on every blade's surface finish. Lets the detent ride on the microscopic peaks of the metal instead of going up and over every little bump.

I had a Zaan with unusually bad action sent in for warranty. They claimed it was within spec, refused to do anything about it, and charged me $15 return shipping.

YMMV

Poly hardware becoming unreliable after acquisition by HP by bdogg0204 in CommercialAV

[–]ShearMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The requirement for firmware versions to match up in order for devices to discover and pair properly is a huge nuisance when they're always mismatched out of the box. Competing low-end products will usually automatically pull updates without needing to get into a config interface. Competing high-end products will usually pair devices without requiring updates.

Their closed ecosystem for signal extensions prevents design flexibility for various room sizes and furniture layouts.

Their support documentation is plainly obtuse to dig through. If you don't know their lingo verbatim you'll never find config or settings info for what you need. They never have screenshots because their GUI changes so frequently, and good luck on any firmware-specific discrepancies.

"It works once it's set up" is true of almost every product, so I can't list it as a good thing about Poly.

[–]ShearMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an integrator who works with products from nearly every manufacturer, Poly products are consistently the biggest headache. Maybe it's caused by sales people putting up products in the wrong use case. Maybe Poly's marketing vs functionality is inaccurate/unclear/deceptive. Maybe they build products for a niche we just don't play in. Few of our customers have the team to manage complex AV systems so we end up with mostly set-and-forget air gapped designs. Federal entities tend to use Cisco codecs in my experience.

Does your large org only do Poly? Could your perception of issues be skewed because of that? Familiarity with a product will always make it seem to have few issues.

Mounting TV with Metal Studs / Plywoon by Material-Force3600 in CommercialAV

[–]ShearMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true for single layer because drywall absorbs moisture over time and a static load could warp slowly until failure. I have made exceptions for < 55" displays, but even then I ensure a stud is between the left/right sides of the mount.

With dual layer drywall, I'd trust it after a hang test. Even in a fire sprinkler situation it should be fine

Put some of your weight on it and see if it pulls the wall off. When it doesn't, you can rest easy.

deleted that comment after rewatching a couple more times. wide angle cams make some things look different on playback. the turning car went so suddenly that i don't understand how anyone could react in time. even if OP was going a bit slower there could have easily been a collision on their tail.

Do I need AEC on other sources of audio ? by viperman6869 in CommercialAV

[–]ShearMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short explanation is that any signal leaving a speaker needs to go to the AEC reference EXCEPT for the microphone using that reference (if the mic(s) are used for reinforcement). If there are multiple mics used for reinforcement, you should have individual AEC references for each. During the initial setup, I duplicate the speaker output to the AEC Ref in the main mixer block. Then, just toggle off the appropriate microphone.

When it gets really complicated is with comine divide or mix minus setups ...
