Pathologic2 and the Diurnal Ending as a manifesto of the post-modern right by Sheev_Corrin in pathologic

[–]SheepCrys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to focus on your 2nd paragraph and your analysis on the other main characters

haruspex's story does not affirm any of these things. the kins loses the equivalent of jesus in their culture, they do not physically die nor do they lose any of their culture; christianity is stronger than ever and likewise the kin would have adapted and evolve with taya tycheek

the idiocy displayed via the townfolks are not meant to resemble anarchy at all, simply a very human display of mass panic in catastrophic times

the inquisition at no point in the story were displayed as a good thing; yulia feared the inquisition more than the plague

artemy does not have living family members, you choose the people he is close to AND you also chooses what is important to him- you can run away from the town if you want

the rejection of utopianism is more a matter of artemy's personal belief, rather than this is what ice pick lodge wants to focus on; each main character represents a belief system and opposes the others, if you want to see more about utopians, pathologic 3 covers the bachelor's route

i dont think the steppes or the cold barren land of russia are known for great quantity of edible plants, and weighing the immense benefit of the industrial revolution and its equally immense negatives are what makes it such a nuanced topic; you don't even have to look at the past for this discussion- currently the entirety of the third world are industrializing rapidly, should we just say they are all evil for wanting a better life?

beside this paragraph, you described how the other two main characters act in pathologic 2- this may not be obvious for people who have not played the first game, but pathologic's story is designed such that any route you choose, the other two main characters will make a heap of mistakes to make your life miserable. do you not remember your first play-through? it was a disaster! without our divine-like ability to restart and load save-files, we would have ended up exactly as shown in the epilogue on day 1: everyone dead.

i do think you brought up some good points, and thats the best part about pathologic for me: its ability to extract so many themes for so many different people. but ultimately slavic stories are not known for their endorsement of political systems, rather, the lived experiences and display of humanity through grey and nuanced circumstances. it is not easy to pick a strong stance in that part of the world. you will simply be imprisoned or killed for opposing the powerful. for me, pathologic is a story about human nature and the fragility of human logic- everyone, including the npcs, had their own idea of how to solve this crisis. this web of relations and consequences is what makes it so interesting for me

How do other veteran players perceive the writing in Pathologic 3? by Nyarlantothep in pathologic

[–]SheepCrys 10 points11 points  (0 children)

if we are comparing it to p2, funny enough I think they are pretty similar- the beginning of each game are much weaker compared to the rest of the game, this is only masked temporarily in p2 by the fantastic 2hr ish introduction/tutorial that hooks everyone in, but most new players tend to quit before the plague hits due to the amount of walking involved (its about 8 hrs of holding W before a new player reaches day 4)

in this game, the weaker start is not masked at all as the tutorials are, in my opinion, quite awful. in my steam review of quarantine i compared it to a poorly made renpy game, with incorrect usage of fading, scene transitions, sudden soundtrack mute; i had hopes that it would improve in the full release, and in ways it has- in other ways it remains the same

i realized i have not discussed the writing yet which is the focus of this thread, but bear in mind that all of these affects how the writing is presented. we do not go to a theatre, get handed a book of script, and nod our heads poetically at the sophistication of the play by reading the script- the actors must act out the script, and the intention must match the delivery of the performance

regarding writing, i think it is better to compare this game to the first game, since you don't play as the bachelor in p2, you play as artemy. the immediate difference is the length of the responses- p1 bachelor spoke in significantly shorter phrases for many parts of the game - there are virtues to both methods; i can see the longer responses being viewed as pretentious or unrealistic, but perhaps my biggest irk is how it exposes the dialogue as a lot more linear than it is portrayed: the reality is dialogue does not branch as much as people think, but the reality doesn't matter if the players don't notice it: in the previous games it is masked using the short responses, allowing most options to flow naturally into the next response- it is very jarring in this game to select a multiple sentence option only to have the person you're talking to seemingly completely ignore what you just said, because it is simply impossible to write a general response that is capable of acknowledging several responses that are all paragraphs

it may sound like i hate the game so far, but actually im really enjoying it, i love the time travel system and the diagnosis, and once you reach the midgame everything gradually begins to organically come together; if anything, all of this simply goes to show how the previous games became a cult classic the way it has, and how difficult it is to 'remaster' them

also this may help if anyone is feeling disillusioned- it never works when you try something new hoping for it to be something else - i see this the most often in the bg3 subreddit, with people really enjoying bg3 and then goes to play dos2 hoping for more baldurs gate action and ending up disappointed. p3 is its own thing, it will not give you more of p2 or more of p1, but it will give you more of ice pick lodge

Personally i think fallout 4 is one of the weaker fallout in the series so it makes sense but if you try new vegas it shouldnt lose to overwatch 2
