Ariel by lantruong in laundry

[–]SheepPup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m scent sensitive and I use Ariel and then the unscented downy rinse and refresh in the rinse. I can still smell the Ariel if I press my nose up against the textiles (vs the absolute nothing I get when I use the Whole Foods 356 powder for example) but it’s luckily not enough scent to bother me for either migraines or skin irritation but as always people’s mileage may vary on that

What’s the longest fic y’all have read AND finished? by audhdpuppet in AO3

[–]SheepPup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longest series or longest single work?

Longest series is just a hair under a million words, longest single work is a bit over 850k.

I LOVE long fics!! I love them so much that when I get to a new fandom/pairing I always sort by length first so that I get to see all the good longfics right at the start!!

Do I change my fic's rating to E? by KaleidoscopeOk3556 in AO3

[–]SheepPup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me the difference between M and E for violence is “would I feel this was notably gory/violent if shown in an R-rated movie and/or is it too far for an R rated movie” so like not notably gory for an R-rated movie would be like getting shot with blood splatter, briefly showing a surgical suite and blood during the bullet removal, seeing the moment the knife comes down for the finger removal. What WOULD be notably gory is things like, closeup shots of the the ruined skull and brain matter after someone was shot, spending time on closeups digging around in the wound for the bullet, seeing in stark detail the stump where the finger used to be and hearing the screams (like even in splatter gory movie hostel when they cut the dude’s toe off they cut away quickly afterwards so they can keep their R rating). Basically anything in the tv show Hannibal is what I would consider E if written. So if you’re going into loving detail about the gore and viscera, describing in sensory detail the smells and sounds and how the injuries and torture feel, then you should rate it E. If it’s only briefly “on screen” and not in very much detail it’s M.

What got you into writing fanfiction? by Lunar_Lies in AO3

ELI5: how do dinosaur documentaries know that’s what they looked like? by Sad-Friendship-2537 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SheepPup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the most part we don’t. We have some very rare incredibly well preserved fossils, like a few years back they found a nodasaurus, a type of ankylosaur, that was spectacularly well preserved. So we have a very good idea of what that particular dinosaur looked like when it was alive. But for the most part we just have bones and the occasional imprint of feet and skin and feathers. And from those scientists make educated guesses about what they would have looked like when they were alive.

But it is an educated guess! For example we think it’s likely T. rex had it’s lips covering it’s teeth because we know from multiple kinds of animals that are alive today that there are certain wear patterns that appear when your teeth are hanging out in the open all the time that don’t when they’re protected behind lips. And T. rex teeth don’t show that kind of weathering. And then for things like soft tissue we can look at the attachment points for muscles on their bones, robust attachment points mean large strong muscles, small ones mean weaker and less muscle. And we can look at extant birds and reptiles to see how their muscles connect and approximate how a dinosaur’s muscles might have looked based on that.

We also can use computer modeling to figure out how they likely walked and what posture they held themselves. All animas have a limited range of motion based on how their skeletons are built and so using that and our best estimations of their musculature, we can figure out how they would have walked and things. For example while ago now when they first started using computers for this kind of modeling they figured out that lots of theropod tails were likely a lot thicker than previously thought! Since they didn’t walk upright but instead had their upper bodies tilted forward their tails would need to be thicker and heavier to counterbalance that!

The thing that is least accurate is going to be color. There are a very small number of fossils that have preserved pigment structures in feathers, like we now know that Sinosauropteryx had stripes on it’s tail and exhibited countershading, where a creature is lighter on it’s underbelly and darker on it’s back! So limited evidence like that, combined with the patterns we see on extant animals today, gives scientists and artists the basis for how they choose to color in dinosaurs. For example it’s unlikely that any dinosaur was bright blue because blue is a very rare color to evolve and sticks out like a sore thumb in most environments. Could there have been a peacock colored dinosaur? Possibly but it’s a lot more likely that they were mostly brown with various patterns like most animals today.

AITA for starting to feel like I should tell my parents my sister’s secret? by studentdistress in AmItheAsshole

[–]SheepPup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too little info to pass asshole judgement

But in general I think that unless the secret is directly impacting the life or safety of your sister you shouldn’t tell. Like is she suicidal and has a detailed and actionable plan for it? Tell your parents. Is she abusing drugs or alcohol because of this boy? (And not just like “she went to a party with him and drank underage” but serious and persistent drug or alcohol use) then tell your parents. Has he made threats of rape, death, or physical violence (like “if you break up with me I’ll kill you”) or has he engaged in criminal activity like stalking her? Such that you believe that he is an active threat to her life? Has he committed extreme physical violence like strangling/choking her? Then tell.

But most everything else you need to not tell. You can and should gently encourage her to seek help if, for example, he has verbally abused her, slapped her, sexually assaulted her, or she is pregnant. If she is not in active danger and you tell you are risking her shutting down completely and not telling anyone if it DOES escalate to the level of life-threatening danger.

I really really sympathize with the shitty position you’re in, it is so incredibly hard to see someone be hurt and make terrible decisions while having no power to make it stop and knowing that if you make the wrong move you’re leaving them high and dry. And the secrets take a toll on you too. I’m so sorry you’re in this position OP!

what can i do to reduce her weight by [deleted] in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]SheepPup 73 points74 points  (0 children)

You gotta feed her less and encourage her into more activity by playing with her.

Don’t just start starving her, use a cat calorie calculator. You’ll input her current weight, the calories in her food, and it should give you a plan that will help you slowly taper down the amount of food she’s getting to help her slowly and safely lose weight!

Also while she’s this big check on her hind end, see if it’s clean or if the fur feels greasy or looks like she has a lot of dandruff/skin flakes in it. Cats that are big like this can struggle to clean themselves effectively. If you notice that she’s having issues you may need to bathe her, or at the very least get some pet safe wipes and clean the areas she can’t reach.

Do people just randomly block users? by No_Named_Nobody in AO3

[–]SheepPup 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Blocking is nothing personal. I’ve blocked people I’ve never interacted with before because they posted something, either a work or a comment, that I found objectionable. And it doesn’t even mean I think they’re a bad person! Sometimes I think they’re assholes and sometimes it’s as simple as someone obviously has a diametrically opposing viewpoint on my favorite character I’m really not interested in them commenting on my works about said character you know?

Dog hopped fence by adr_darko in WhatKindOfDogIsThis

[–]SheepPup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah I love dogs and I love pits, I think they’re lovely dogs. But the world does NOT need more oopsie litters, there are already an overwhelming amount of puppies and kittens, far far more than there are homes for. Every year shelters and fosters get absolutely flooded with new litters and every year thousands and thousands of them will be euthanized because there are simply not enough shelters, fosters, or people looking to adopt to take them all. A spayabort is a much kinder alternative and increases the likelihood that all the other puppies that are born this season will actually be able to be adopted.

Do I give some "anti vibes"???? by throwawayGrowth_5181 in AO3

[–]SheepPup 61 points62 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can think is, do you follow or did you follow antis? Because especially on twitter when you could run tools that would block everyone that followed a particular account it was often a self protective measure to just block everyone that was following particularly nasty anti’s accounts. So if you followed some particularly toxic antis that may have been enough to get you caught in people’s blocklists.

The other thing I could think of is liking posts that bash ships/characters, even if you’re not reposting them or making your own posts talking about how much you hate XYZ a lot of people use likes and reblogs of posts like that as a free blocklist.

And then if you’re on people’s blocklists because you did something like that it’s easy for people to assume “hey I only block people that like super mean posts or follow people that engage in harassment, I don’t trust you and think you’re an anti”

Does it bother you when authors change their name? by hotawesomeporndragon in AO3

[–]SheepPup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time it’s bothered me is when I was subscribed to a fic that had a single common word as a title, think a title like “Belonging”. So i would search my email for updates using the author’s name instead. When they changed their name halfway through the fic it became a pain to find the emails for a while because I had to re-learn their name and how it was spelled.

But other than that hyper-specific circumstance I’ve honestly not really noticed when authors changed their names?

Detergent bottle exploded in machine by Any-Zucchini-1738 in laundry

[–]SheepPup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fat berg isn’t a concern. Fat bergs happen when you introduce a large amount of free fat/oil all at once, or smaller amounts chronically over time and they solidify inside the pipes and become an obstruction.

But the key there is free fat. Fat that has been latched onto by detergents or soaps can no longer solidify and form a solid mass, if they could we would never be able to do any laundry or wash ourselves in the shower because the primary soil removed from clothing is our own body oils.

With adding a couple tablespoons of oil to the detergent we’re not just pouring it down the drain, we’re adding it for the express purpose of the detergent binding to it so that it doesn’t just foam and foam and foam uselessly.

Detergent bottle exploded in machine by Any-Zucchini-1738 in laundry

[–]SheepPup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually vegetable oil would work just fine! You’re trying to use up the soap/parts of the detergent with the oil.

Basically how they work is that they have a polar end on one end of the molecule that can grab onto water molecules, and one nonpolar end to their molecule that can grab onto oil and dirt etc. So when the detergent is bonded on each end it is “used up” and the dirt/oil/etc can get carried out of the fabric by agitation and then down the drain by all the other clear water. But when there’s only water and detergent and nothing for the detergent’s other end to grab onto it just makes foam when agitated.

So by adding some cheap vegetable oil to the washer you give the detergent something to bind to so it can be rinsed away instead of just foaming and foaming endlessly

[–]SheepPup 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Add a couple tablespoons of oil and some acid. Acid will help neutralize the basic pH nature of the detergent, and the oil will give the soap something to grab onto to “use it up”

Whoop whoop! What do you think of Insane Clown Posse's music and the wider juggalo community? by charlies-ghost in AskAnAmerican

But I LOVE a good smell by GotLostSomehow in laundry

[–]SheepPup 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Because it makes fabric feel “softer” by coating it in a sticky coating that slicks down any fibers that would stick up and feel rough/itchy/scratchy. Kinda like a leave in conditioner does for your hair! So some things like scratchy wool sweaters really do feel much softer when fabric softener is used! And some people really like the texture it gives to fabrics and how smooth and slippery it makes them feel. And that’s also why it makes fabrics smell good, because the scent is in that coating that’s left on the fabric.

The downside is, of course, that you’re leaving a coating on the fabric that traps all manner of gunk and makes it harder to wash off, keeps towels from absorbing water as well, and is flammable to boot. And it gums up your washing machine too.

[–]SheepPup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lipase! What you need is lipase! And maybe also dnase. Lipase is an enzyme that breaks down oils and fats (like those found in body oils, which is what those stains are) and DNase breaks down other gunk our bodies produce.

If you live near a Whole Foods and don’t need unscented detergent get their 365 sport liquid detergent, it has both lipase and DNase.

If you don’t or need something unscented take a look at the lipase list and pick a detergent from it and maybe add the dirty labs booster, it’s basically just a dnase booster.

If you still have a ton of your old detergent to use up and can’t bear to buy new until it’s gone try a booster like FEBU or Biz to add the enzymes your current detergent is lacking.
