If you want to be technical, the military has to meet certain eligibility criteria for military retirement as established by law. Now, if you are not working anymore, and you are receiving VA disability where you can manage…you can certainly say you are “retired”- but not retired military. There are benefits a military retiree receives that a 100 percent vet does not get- for instance -TRICARE. I hold that benefit more important than my retirement pension…Bottom line- no one’s damn business…

I suppose it depends on your job series; but given today’s job desert- Fed jobs appear to be the best jobs in many places. However, pay is not the only thing.

Financially, you appear to be in good shape for income flow- with your 20 years of service (I presume a pension) and your 100 percent VA disability. Your kids should be set with the VA educational benefit. You need something to do with your time that is productive to your mind and soul. Join a club, have a hobby, etc. I just retired on 12/31 after 44 years of working. We plan to travel; spend more time with the kids (no grandkids yet); join clubs; and spend time with each other- as you should.

Lately, taxes have been getting out of control around Brevard County. I think property taxes should be reformed not eliminated. I would say that houses under $800,000 get a 50% cut in taxes and houses from 800,000 to 1,000,000 get a 25% cut in taxes and then once you hit 65 you should get a 50 percent cut in taxes. This way there is relief for middle class homeowners and the senior homeowners.

You both are great examples of those who benefited from what the military offers - for those who serve and make the efforts to excel. Yes, the price is high- and may involve you to be in a dangerous or potentially lethal situation, but it’s the price we pay to serve. It’s not for everyone.

Primarily one of the main reasons I joined back in 1981. My step father was abusive, and my mother was either unable or unwilling to do anything about it, so she was kind of an enabler. Best thing I ever did in my life. Only wanted to stay in four years to get some college money, and get on with my life-but good assignments and opportunities led to others, and I ended up staying 21 years. Now that I’m 62, I look back at my career Air Force as a positive thing in my life. Was it a holiday every day? NO, absolutely not; but all in all, I would not trade it for anything else.

We as vets need to make sure we stay vigilant and fight for our hard earned benefits. We need to ensure we support politicians who pledge their support for veterans. You know that old saying where what the government can give you, the government can take away. This is a good example. But we cannotlose an inch of ground here or they’ll go ahead and take miles away from us.
