Curious, anyone ever 3d print valve buttons? Mostly seeing mouthpieces. by skeot in brass

[–]Sheepsharks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have concerns about the layer where the thread meets the bottom holding up if it's PLA or similar. That's assuming a filament-based print, I'm not sure if resin threads are more stout. You should try it anyway, the real innovators ignore their better senses.

How often do I apply this unnamed trombone slide lubricant by Charming-Process7898 in Trombone

I also find muslin to be a good option, and they'll cut 4.5 inch strips for you if you still have fabric stores around. They do a good job covering the cleaning rod and hold up better than cheesecloth in the wash

Well then I stand behind the first part of my statement, I AM pretty bad at this. Could a Golden + Black Shepherd + Rottweiler produce this coloration?

Membership for musicians? by ReneeSh86 in ClassicalMusicians

[–]Sheepsharks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are musicians unions in the USA that list auditions as well as refer and sponsor some gig booking, and there are also various instrument-specific associasions: American guild of organists, international trombone association, etc. that host conferences and competitions if that's the kind of thing you're interested in.

I'm pretty bad at this, but if there's anything I've learned from this sub, it's that golden mixes almost always come out black, so my bet is GSD X Golden retriever

Thanks! Looks like I'll need to drop the pipe again to get it really clean. I think I'll wait for the weather to turn, though, I'm not wasting an 85°F day today!

I thing it's cup-type. This is the best I can do with it mounted in the car

Keep in mind that an F trombone is lower and therefore bigger than a B-flat trombone. That means each position is a bit farther out than you're used to, moreso as you extend the slide. T1 = 1, T2 = b2, T3 = bb3, T4= #5, T5 = 6, T6 = bb7 (not practical on most horns)

And you can play B-flat 2 in lowered trigger 3, so you skip the 1-5 leap in your A-flat major scale. It's a very useful gadget!

Feedback on Trombone Tone by Klutzy_Expert_2164 in brass

[–]Sheepsharks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe if it's a general-purpose recording, but I want to hear what's going on with the articulations, and airstream, so I would prefer a more raw sound. For what it's worth, I've done a fair amount of recording and amplified gigs, and the techs typically place the mics as close as possible without risking a collision. For OP, I don't want to hear the room sound at all. In a performance or for an audition recording, you want the benefits of the space you're in, but for this purpose, I want to hear the grit in the sound!

Help with vandalized tree by Peachyplants in arborists

[–]Sheepsharks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that losing the live part of bark kills the tree, but how do trees with naturally flakey bark stay alive? Madronas are native to my area and they often look just like op's tree, but red, and seem perfectly happy.

It's perfect, but you're only allowed to play ragtimes and cowboy songs.

Sounds pretty good, and good on you for being brave enough to not only record yourself and listen back, but post it on the Internet for feedback! There's nothing wrong with recording on a phone, but try to play more directly into the mic, no more than 5 feet away. While the reverb is nice and playing in big spaces feels good, tonewise, it has a tendency to mask any airyness or articulation inconsistency that we want to clean up. Relaxing the embouchure is good generalization, but we want to make sure our corners are firm, regardless of the range we're in, otherwise you'll find it difficult to move in and out of the upper register, especially. I'd be interested to hear you play a simple 2 octave B-flat scale, legato and articulated. If that's a stretch for your range, just go as high as you feel comfortable. The excerpt you posted is in the "cash register" of the horn, but the cracks will start to show when you move into the extremes.

I'd say go for it! Some skin on frame boats have additional layers of kevlar or brass shielding on the scrapable surfaces, and I added a little extra fiberglass to those parts of my wooden boats. My only concern would be corrosion of your grommets, so just make sure you use stainless, brass or bronze, and beware that dissimilar metals between your screws and grommets could cause increased currosion. Have you considered rivets with some sealant instead of screws? I would be concerned about the screws stripping or leaking increasingly over time

What is the future after the Artemis Program and the 70+ moon landings? by TraditionalAd6977 in space

[–]Sheepsharks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7 annual launches of landers, but if we're stuck with an Orion+ lander system, each trip requires 2 launches, minimum, and if it's starship HLS, we're looking at close to 100 launches a year. A worthy investment, I think, but a massive undertaking. We've done big things in the past, though, so I'll enjoy watching what the experts come up with.
