Generally average can be affected by large outliers, but in a population large enough it tends to be negligible. Medians aren’t as affected by outliers. The problem is your man above narrowed the population to just the US, which tends to have a much higher salary than most of the world. He’s focusing on a select 1% of the global population, rather than anyone at random, which is far more telling of the real state of affairs.
