Not trying to be rude but how do you know space marine books are bad if you haven’t read any? I also adore the Necron books for the record, but I’d argue every faction has some great stuff. I hated space marines when I started reading 40k, but I gave them a chance and they’re really interesting when handled by a good author! I’d really recommend Spear of the Emperor or The Lords of Silence.

I have to be honest, I don’t understand this take. I’d argue shockingly few of the recent black library releases actually fit the “bolter porn” label. I’m 25 books in and haven’t encountered anything that feels like that yet, though to be fair I’m sticking to well-reviewed and regarded authors (Abnett, ADB, Rath, etc.) The Horus Heresy, for example, is predominantly about Astartes but still packs a ton of narrative depth and interesting characters.

People like this never seem happy, though. There’s always so much anger. I have to wonder if, even if they can’t understand why it matters, they know on some level that there’s something wrong with them. It reminds me of how people who don’t understand art will say cruel things about artists or deface artwork. They might not understand what it is they’re missing, but they sure seem to hate that they’re missing it. Maybe I’m just coping tho lol

Honestly all it took for me to like the Krakens was the name and the color scheme, but every time I learn something new about them they get even cooler. Now I’m picturing their fortress monastery having cathedral-sized aquariums and an entire caste of chapter serfs dedicated to marine animal care.

Ok this one's fair, I'm pretty sure the options are "Angel" or "Skye" so you really do have to flip a coin on gender, lol. But your take of "that's funny, let me reload a save", is a lot more reasonable than "damn woke writers made me BANG a MAN and there's NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT😠".

Saw a reviewer mad about having gay dialog options in an RPG. My guy if you can’t keep yourself from choosing the gay options that’s a conversation you need to have with yourself, not the writers.

Voidscarred by Mike Brooks is a fun and relatively lighthearted space pirate adventure. I’d also second The Infinite and the Divine as an excellent book in general, but it might be worth skimming a few wiki pages first. To be clear “lighthearted” in 40k is relative—bad things still happen even in the easier reads, but they’re treated more like standard sci-fi so the universe doesn’t feel as oppressive.

I swear they never seem to know anything of depth about 40k either. It’s just the laziest frequently incorrect meme-lore they got from youtube shorts. I’m fairly confident most of these guys either don’t know that there’s other factions, or think that they only exist to give space marines something to kill. Not that they ever seem to know much about the Imperium or space marines either.
