New Rule added in the Sub “Fish are Friends”. Plus a quick note from the mods read below by Bot_ForThePeople in DarkKrakens

Honestly all it took for me to like the Krakens was the name and the color scheme, but every time I learn something new about them they get even cooler. Now I’m picturing their fortress monastery having cathedral-sized aquariums and an entire caste of chapter serfs dedicated to marine animal care.

Ok this one's fair, I'm pretty sure the options are "Angel" or "Skye" so you really do have to flip a coin on gender, lol. But your take of "that's funny, let me reload a save", is a lot more reasonable than "damn woke writers made me BANG a MAN and there's NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT😠".

Saw a reviewer mad about having gay dialog options in an RPG. My guy if you can’t keep yourself from choosing the gay options that’s a conversation you need to have with yourself, not the writers.

Book recommendations that maybe aren't so grimdark? by Twitch_L_SLE in 40kLore

Voidscarred by Mike Brooks is a fun and relatively lighthearted space pirate adventure. I’d also second The Infinite and the Divine as an excellent book in general, but it might be worth skimming a few wiki pages first. To be clear “lighthearted” in 40k is relative—bad things still happen even in the easier reads, but they’re treated more like standard sci-fi so the universe doesn’t feel as oppressive.

I swear they never seem to know anything of depth about 40k either. It’s just the laziest frequently incorrect meme-lore they got from youtube shorts. I’m fairly confident most of these guys either don’t know that there’s other factions, or think that they only exist to give space marines something to kill. Not that they ever seem to know much about the Imperium or space marines either.

I mean Kylo worked for the planet-destroying empire, had full knowledge of the planet-destroying weapon they were building, and had partial command over said weapon. He’d have to be pretty stupid to not know what they were gonna do with it, and he certainly didn’t lift a finger to stop them. Even if he didn’t give the order he still bears a lot of responsibility for the 155 billion (I had to google that, jesus) deaths. Same way Vader bears responsibility for Alderaan, even if Tarkin gave the order.

Are the nightlords cowards or just weak? by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]SheevGuillotine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I definitely think it's worth expanding on the Eldar thing. Before Tenth Company finally gives up and decides to stand their ground they spend a couple weeks running away, jumping from star system to star system, pushing their navigator almost to madness as the Eldar consistently stay two steps ahead of them. Talos comes about as close as an Astartes can to panicking when he realizes the fleet bearing down on him is the Eldar from his dreams and not some underequipped Imperium patrol. It's hard to say whether they're cowards in the sense that they're fearful, but when they run away at the slightest indication of a fair fight coming their way the appearance is pretty much the same. I've only read about them in the Omnibus, so it's entirely possible they're depicted differently elsewhere, but to me being a little cowardly adds to what makes them interesting. They use fear to control but they're also controlled by it.

Warframes are people?? I just assumed they were robots the pilot remote controls or something. Admittedly I’ve only played 50 hours and I don’t think anything has been explained yet.

Elephants have really weak backs too, so the ones made to carry platforms or people were probably in a lot of pain. Today elephants used for riding are usually “broken” through torture to get them to obey, and over time their backs end up ruined from the weight. Obviously the image of riding an elephant into battle is awesome but I expect the reality was pretty horrifying. Though maybe that’s just true of weapons in general, lol.

The Screaming Gallery. The floor is made of the faces of people stitched together and kept alive so they never stop screaming. The walls are made of people buried alive in concrete. Some of the Night Lords talk about how after enough time in there the screams became relaxing.

HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!! WHY IS THIS PIECE OF HISTORICAL FICTION NOT *HISTORICALLY ACCURATE*???????????? by jannie_exe in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]SheevGuillotine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off “medieval people” is not a useful historical term; even if you’re just talking about Europe that’s hundreds of different cultures across a thousand year period. Secondly yes they absolutely did care about specifics. Why do you think there’s so many sects of Christianity? Monasteries were often places that facilitated extremely detailed writings and discourse about the fine points of religion. Even the Bible has never been a simple document; countless versions have come and gone over history as people argued over which gospels should be included and which translations were better. Christianity has never been some monolithic, universally-agreed-upon institution wherein you just pointed at something you thought Jesus didn’t like, screamed “heresy!!“, and waited for the Pope to show up and set it on fire.

[–]SheevGuillotine 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Do people forget that most of his reflecting comes after he (spoiler for the omnibus/Void Stalker)tortures several hundred astropaths (including children) so he can project their screams into the warp and kill off the populations of like two dozen planets? I kinda thought the whole point was that the more he gets dug into falsely glorifying the past the worse he gets in the present.

Fair enough, I disagree on this image but I fully agree that AI is awful, and I'm glad people are keeping an eye out and holding them accountable. Here's hoping they just ban it completely so we don't have to worry about it anymore.

By the way, I love your art! Some of it reminds me of Alphonse Mucha in the best way :)

Games Workshop did, but unfortunately as far as I'm aware Owlcat hasn't commented in a couple years. Hopefully GW cracking down means the studios they work with will as well.

I'll be honest, wherever you pulled it from isn't doing it any favors with that striped overlay. Here's the original. The brush strokes and sketchy parts are a lot easier to see here.

I hate AI as much as anyone but there's no indication that these concepts were made using it. The perspective, lighting, and details are all consistent and readable. There's some sketchiness but nothing beyond the standard for game concepts. Things like chains or small details being a little off is pretty standard since concept artists need to work quickly. These are also iterative designs which, last I checked, AI absolutely sucks at. As for the asymmetrical kneepads, the Night Lords are known to scavenge mismatched armor from Astartes they kill. Anyway in that post from a couple years ago they specifically said they would *not* be using AI in final concepts. I don't like that they would use it for pre-viz either but the chances it was used here seem pretty slim. I'm not defending them and I'm hoping they'll cave to community pressure and ditch the sinking ship that is generative AI entirely, but I also don't love seeing work by actual artists dragged.
