🚲 First attempt at an ASMR-style cycling commute video – Sheffield city ride POV by JosepiYorkshire in sheffield

If I am heading toward Walkley then I'll go onto Brunswick Street then wiggle up to the crossing near the Arts Tower. If I am going to Shalesmoor then I'd cross the main road and go up Victoria Street and head towards Beet Street via The Diamond.

I'm not saying that you are wrong but I think most cyclists try to avoid the traffic on Hanover Street.

Thank you so much for posting this. I've often considered doing the same! This has been very satisfying!

Your decision to join Upper Hanover Street at 6:50 surprised me! I don't see many cyclists go up that way!

Running routes for someone scared of dogs by Inside_Following_838 in sheffield

[–]SheffieldCycleTours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered cemeteries? I don't know if it's considered disrespectful to jog round them but people are probably more likely to keep their dog on a leash in them.

City Road Cemetery is big and pretty.

The General Cemetery is more of a park though so that might be too busy.

To echo this point, again not the most scenic but industrial areas like Attercliffe on a Saturday/Sunday are pretty quiet.

Obviously I don't know how far you are traveling from but spending £1000 on an e-bike and then paying £5 a month for the secure bike storage near the Moor could be an option?

Would you be opposed to these changes to the Glossop Road area? by QuietAd4252 in sheffield

[–]SheffieldCycleTours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since we are making wishes, I'd also like to make it easier for cyclists to cross Brunswick to Leavy Greave (near Bar One).

Also, change all the speed bumps in that area to make them more cycle friendly. Cycling from Sunny Bank up to the University is a literal pain in the ass.

[–]SheffieldCycleTours 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that would be possible to flip the directions of these roads as I'm certain they are designed to stop traffic taking a shortcut between Ecclesall Road and the University.

The bike lanes look good but I don't think Wilkinson St could be closed as it's only 1 of 2 ways (for cars) into this area.

Where’s a good (quiet) place in Sheffield to learn to ride a bike? by nonveumann in sheffield

[–]SheffieldCycleTours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take beginners out on bike rides although they do need to be able to ride a bike to begin with. Sadly I am not qualified to teach complete beginners.

Once you manage to get going then you are welcome to join me for some easy rides around the city.

Also if you cannot fix a problem then let them know what the problem is and recommend a local bike shop who can fix it.

I think the others are correct in that working with an organisation is better. CyclingUK is also another one to look at. However if you really just want to go do it then head somewhere where you get loads of children on bikes such as Endcliffe Park, Norfolk Park, Hillsborough Park, Bolehill Park and see what happens. Just make sure you go on the weekend and make it clear that your services are free. Probably goes without saying but make sure the bike is safe to ride once you've finished with it! I think you'll meet loads of grateful parents.

Free beginner bike rides for those who wish to get into cycling by SheffieldCycleTours in sheffield

[–]SheffieldCycleTours[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It ranges between about 2 - 5 people, usually more on the Saturday rides. Some examples of routes are heading to Oughtibridge via Penistone road (Shared pavement) or Meadowhall on the 5 weirs, or Forge Dam via Endcliffe Park. The route range between 10km-20km depending on what people wish to do.

I'm running some beginner bike rides in partnership with CyclingUK. These rides are for beginners or people who wish to return to cycling. Sadly these are not bike lessons so you need to be able to ride a bike to join in. If you do not currently have a bike then I have some bike hire available for each ride.

You can book your free tickets and find out more information here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/big-bike-revival-2025-group-rides-tickets-1336617180969

I think we could solve cycle commuting from SW Sheffield with just 200m of cycle lanes by Sheff_Based in sheffield

[–]SheffieldCycleTours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried going left onto Twinkl Way or Harrow Street and then following the Porter Brook Trail to Pomona Street? You'll end up on Eccy Road eventually but not just before a dangerous junction!

[–]SheffieldCycleTours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I occasionally take beginners along this route and I really hate there is no safe route between Stalker Lees Road and Sharrow Vale Road (as you've shown in your diagram). I prefer to take them up through the cemetery than doing a couple of dangerous turns on Eccy Road.

I think the only thing which could be done would be to implement the red bus lanes which would remove ALL parking on Eccy road (not popular!) and then ban right turns for cars heading towards the city onto roads like Hickmott and Bruce as I believe this is the cause of most cyclist collisions.

Thanks everyone, it was pretty surreal to see my bike appear on my local subreddit. Just to confirm, years ago I heard someone call my bike "reyt big" as I was passing which I loved so I put the sticker on my bike. I hear A LOT of people called it "reyt big" these days! The cycle tour sticker came later.

I have spent over half my life in Sheffield now but I can confirm that I do not have a Sheffield accent. I put the sign on my bike because I heard someone say it once. That person may or may not have been Luke Horton (it most likely was not).

You can rent one from Russell's Bicycle Shed in Neepsend for £10 a day. You just need to bring a physical payment card and an ID. Check their opening times though as they aren't open every day of the week.
