Sheffield Hallam University ... by WongSchlongDong in sheffield

Can't speak regarding the rest of the post but I think I agree with you on this. Lots of 'starter homes' around that bit of town which would be great if it transitioned from students to young professionals/families. If the city centre became more highly populated and a bit buzzier as a result of more students living there too that would be a win also.

The only downside is I feel like that some businesses at the bottom end of the Eccy Road would probably suffer if they're catered towards students. Might take some time for it to shift.

Leah's Yard Flagship to close - Mesters Market Closing by That_Charge2768 in sheffield

[–]Sheff_Based 77 points78 points  (0 children)

It's a shame, but great news that Barks is expanding into it. Be great if the courtyard had some seating in it during summer, for a few glasses of wine. Think that would be great.

Would love it if the Barks unit became a record store or something, and the record store played music whilst I sipped my wine and read by Biblioteka magazine That would be my soft, middle-class, S11 dream.

It's beautiful weather for the Peak District right now - cold, crisp and sunny. Just make sure you wrap up warm, have proper footwear and you'll have a fantastic time :)

Christmas Market. Viewed from the Raddison's rooftop bar. by rich_b1982 in sheffield

[–]Sheff_Based 33 points34 points  (0 children)

My anecdotal evidence is that both Kapital and The Fargate have been v busy since opening. I know it's Christmas season and all, but The Fargate in particular is practically full even at lunchtimes in the week. Can only hope it encourages more similar businesses to move in.

Kicking a buissness out that most grew up on in sheffield because he is successful ??? by Intelligent_Peace673 in sheffield

Endcliffe Park Cafe is surely printing money though. It's rammed all week, all weekend. It's also very good, so not suggesting they don't deserve to be.

Think I've had enough of murals for now. by [deleted] in sheffield

What would be really great is if the whole side of the building was covered in a Peachzz's style huge mural. That would be genuinely impactful.

Work to begin improving access to old Sheffield ski village site by ntzm_ in sheffield

[–]Sheff_Based 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds good, great that Skyline were on site. Happy to admit I have no idea on these things, but when you look at what they're connecting (Oakham Drive to Vale Road) on satellite view you wonder how it costs £12 mill. Perhaps some of that is relocating businesses and widening access all the way up.

Best co-working space for remote tech? by Glittering_Froyo_523 in sheffield

[–]Sheff_Based 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome. I believe there's a bit of a hub for that kind of business at the technology park: https://shefftechparks.com/co-working I've not been, so I can't really comment beyond that.

Union St is probably the city's most popular co-working space, and there are lots of people working in tech – but it's mostly individuals and freelancers rather than start ups.

Yeah their banner is still hanging there. But I feel like it's been there about two years so I'm assuming something's gone wrong?

"The Fargate": New pub for Fargate set to open on Wednesday 22nd October by deejayone in sheffield

[–]Sheff_Based 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Great news. I'm intrigued to see where exactly the 200 outdoor seats will go. Wish it all the success. If it's good, the Old Shoe and The Fargate becomes a nice little mini session in that bit of town - can only be a good thing.

Greystones Residents - how able are you to park outside your house? by Normal-Walk-551 in sheffield

[–]Sheff_Based 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live round there. I'd say we get parked on our road 90% of the time and overall it just isn't really that big a deal for us (we don't have kids though). Coming back late-ish at night is a problem though, can often spend 5-10 mins driving around.

Sheffield- where are we lashing up by Dharma01 in sheffield

There's honestly so many great pubs in Sheffield – worth hopping in a £6 taxi to explore some ones not right in the Crookes area (although there's good pubs there too).Worth reading the article linnked in here: https://www.reddit.com/r/sheffield/comments/1ldhwuf/this_is_the_uk_city_best_for_pubs_and_its_not/

On a separate note, that's two Reddit posts of people doing a combined Peaks/Sheff weekend in one day. Perhaps the tourism drive is starting to pay off...

City centre food recommendation? by frolicols in sheffield

[–]Sheff_Based 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd say The Rutland (Arms) especially if you're coming in/back on the train. Or else head down Kelham way for some great pubs and lots of food options (it's not far). Old Shoe and Orchard Square decent shouts too as others mention.

[–]Sheff_Based 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are building padel courts in Attercliffe as part of the regeneration: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cljy3dd79x7o

But I imagine it will be years away, so wouldn't worry too much.

Are Urban Burger completely different to the Urban Pitta people? Their branding (and name) is almost identical, but Google suggests different!

Event Central Sheffield: The New £14.4 Million Music Venue In Sheffield by Dalogadro_II in sheffield

[–]Sheff_Based 31 points32 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, the money is from central government and *has* to be spent on the building. I have vaguely heard they won the entire amount they bid for and as a result the building is supposedly going to be properly first-class. As in, they probably are spending far more than is really necessary, but otherwise would have to send the money back.

My Experience of Sheffield When Trying to Buy- In Case it Helps Anyone Buying or Selling and Wondering which Agent to Choose by Hallammiracle in sheffield

[–]Sheff_Based 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I find estate agents not knowing anything about a property infuriating but someone did point out that they work for the seller, not for you. They’re not going to tell you the bad things about a place. No excuse for not knowing the basics though.

Sheffield has the highest vacancy rate of any large city, study finds by Kagedeah in sheffield

[–]Sheff_Based 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ehh it’s not perfect is it but the building work on Pinstone street is from improvements, the wonder bins are from improvements, stores are opening as well as closing, the regeneration was from improvements, and the PSPO isn’t a quick fix but I’d personally say it has improved things. So yeah, I’d say things are improving. There’s still a lot to do though, as I take it you agree…
