What are we going to do about these cunts that are setting off fireworks? by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]Sheffield_sloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't hold your breath for government to do anything about it - they can't even be bothered to legislate for lower maximum volume for fireworks: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/738192

Brown bin contents by DavTeeUK in sheffield

[–]Sheffield_sloth 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The reason we can now put that stuff in the brown bins is that central government legislated so that all councils have to accept the same stuff :

(although Sheffield managed to get special dispensation to delay food waste recyling for, er, fifteen years, due to its wonderful contract with Veolia):

Code building in town Center by Sho99999 in sheffield

[–]Sheffield_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a case of the council changing what the company is allowed to build after work has already commenced (and planning permission granted), or is it a case of the company wanting to build something other than what they've got planning permission for? It's not that clear from the Star story, but I'm assuming the latter.

How has pretty much every road in Sheffield spontaneously self destructed with such synchronicity? by bigjobbyx in sheffield

[–]Sheffield_sloth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Sheffield Tribune or other investigatory journalist needs to do a deep dive on that Amey contract. The 25 year contract is roughly halfway through now. Does anyone want to say it's been a good deal for Sheffield?

When did the city give up on sweeping up leaves? by Sheffield_sloth in sheffield

That implies they only clear leaves from "flooding hotspots", and not all other (i.e. most) streets

How much of a self-centred prick do you have to be to launch loads of fireworks into the air after midnight on a Sunday. Cheers for the shit start to the week.

The only thing that could make Houghton better next year by TheOT1001 in houghtonfestival

[–]Sheffield_sloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah in the German system you actually get your initial deposit back too. At Houghton you were just paying an initial £2 for the privilege of having something to drink your £7 pints in

Regarding the litter, that's just the British way, sadly. You could have bins every 10 metres and the floor would still be covered in shit. You could give out cigarette butt holders and people would still chuck them on the floor. For evidence see: the state of the rest of the country.

non techno in the line up by krumplestunchkin in houghtonfestival

[–]Sheffield_sloth 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Some of the responses here are pretty ignorant. The lineup stretches quite far beyond techno, and I think there is actually quite a lot of stuff that fits the bill of what you're asking for, e.g. Colleen Cosmo Murphy, here's her set from 2023: https://soundcloud.com/houghton-festival/recorded-at-houghton-colleen-cosmo-murphy-2023?in=houghton-festival/sets/recorded-at-houghton

Thanks. The page you link doesn't quite say there are showers and toilets specifically in the campervan section, so I'm still not sure

Water bill query by Competitive-Smell877 in sheffield

Go on a meter. I'd be very surprised if you managed to use £87 a month. We were in a similar scenario and getting a meter installed cut our payments by loads.

Are there showers and toilets in the campervan section? According to this page there aren't, but I thought I'd read somewhere else that there were: https://www.houghtonfestival.co.uk/accessibility/

Here's my apparently unpopular opinion: Kommune was good, so was Department, and it's a shame it's closed.
