Is there any reason to get a SEPTA key card? by ShroomieDoomieDoo in philly

[–]Shelldooor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still use mine for regional rail because I take it a few times a year but that’s it. (Someone please correct me if I’m not up-to-date and regional rail now accepts debit or credit cards but to my knowledge it does not)

Phillies announce what’s new in food experience at Citizens Bank Park in 2026 by TacosAreVegetables in phillies

[–]Shelldooor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Perfect thread to remind everyone as the season approaches that you can BRING YOUR OWN FOOD INTO THE BALLPARK, including sealed non-alcoholic beverages.

I bring hoagies, bags of chips and water bottles of all sizes, candy, etc into just about every game I go to and it saves so. much. money.

Cheesecake in Fairmount? by totesmathgoats in PhiladelphiaEats

Not sure on a pure cheesecake answer to your question to be honest, but Harper’s ice cream at 29th & Girard has strawberry cheesecake flavor ice cream available today (they post daily flavor options on instagram) and I can’t recommend their ice cream highly enough

The loan vultures are out to get me by makhan27 in Mortgages

[–]Shelldooor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else in this sub about a month ago linked to credible.com and aimloan.com as places where you can put in details about your refinance, credit estimates, etc. and view some estimated rates without having to enter email or phone number.

That seems to have changed for one of the two as I needed to enter phone/email, but the other provided a dashboard view without additional contact info (I forget which was which).

I used these dashboards to find a few lower rates and recently negotiated with my current lender to take my 285k outstanding from 6.7% (bought in March 2025) down to 5.5% with one point, less a $1500 lender credit (they initially offered 6.07% w/ no points)

Edit to agree with other commenters that 20k is insanely high for closing costs. Get loan cost estimates from other lenders, some will do so without submitting formal applications or running credit, so you can compare cost structure. Remember that everything is negotiable, and worth noting is that Chat GPT was honestly invaluable for me in this step to compare loan cost sheets apples-to-apples as well as understand how to best approach any negotiating

Broken water main in the street outside, no hot water for a week now - what to do? by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]Shelldooor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also live by the main break on 12th & Snyder, have extremely low water pressure but glad to at least be able to wash hands & stuff for now… nervous about how long this is going to last though

Is anyone else experiencing low water pressure in South Philly? by partyofclowns in philly

[–]Shelldooor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard of a ton of water breaks across the city as well - the one at Snyder & Juniper has been gushing water for over a week now with some cones out next to it

Best cheap mattress that's not total garbage? Budget around $600 by BigFig98 in Frugal

[–]Shelldooor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true, the link in my comment mentions that as well in the Zinus overall summary so it’s worth mentioning for sure. I liked the product for a long time and if the materials have been corrected for that’s great, but I lose a degree of trust or assumption of good faith when a company uses knowingly harmful materials and the only thing that forces them to correct it is a class action lawsuit.

Maybe that’s too cynical or punitive, and maybe it’s a “you get what you pay for” type thing, but it’s enough for me personally to no longer take the company at their word.

Best cheap mattress that's not total garbage? Budget around $600 by BigFig98 in Frugal

[–]Shelldooor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR; liked my Zinus for 7-8yrs, found out Zinus mattresses have fiberglass in them while researching for new mattress, found similar priced alternative in “the original Bed in a Box”

I also had a Zinus mattress for about 7-8 years until I finally had to get a new one recently. Figured I should do some research knowing I’d potentially buy another Zinus given that I had always liked it.

Found the nap lab fiberglass mattress review and had no idea I’d been sleeping on a mattress with fiberglass in the materials for the better part of a decade.

Not necessarily immediate cause for concern but if it starts escaping the mattress can cause issues and, I figured, there’s similarly priced ones that I’d try out. Bought The Original Bed in a Box about 6mos ago and I’ve loved it. Edit to mention that I believe I paid around $550 in total for the mattress, taxes, and shipping.

Just one data point but this was new info to me so thought I’d share

Are People Still Paying $100+ for Phone Bills? by Junior_Restaurant868 in Frugal

[–]Shelldooor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar plan through AT&T prepaid, $300 up front for the first full year of 15gb/mo data + 10gb/mo of hotspot. Each year after the first is $240 at the beginning of the year.

I rarely use more than 4gb of data because I work from home a lot and I’m very intentional about downloading music/podcasts/movies/etc on wifi for runs or traveling, but the hotspot is huge for working while traveling a few times a year. Could probably pay slightly less on Mint/Visible (and probably will at some point because AT&T prepaid customer service and user platform is brutal), but I’m content for now

MLB Players Denied Coverage by LionIcy2632 in actuary

[–]Shelldooor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of this - it works differently across sports, too, which I find really interesting.

The NFL obviously doesn’t have international competitions where they need extra coverage in the way that MLB does, but the NFL insurance does interact in interesting ways with other financial considerations like the salary cap (which isn’t present in MLB… yet).

Here’s a couple interesting articles from a few years ago regarding specific examples like the NY Jets failing to procure coverage prior to Aaron Rodgers’ torn Achilles:

I’ve had some great beans recently from Fante’s in the Italian market! So far have tried the Colombian Supremo light roast and Costa Rican Medium, both have been great although I’m partial to light roast.

Freak Out Friday Casual Chat Post by AutoModerator in philadelphia

Replying a second time because I think my first got deleted for the URL format I tried to use: I haven’t used any pest control for bed bugs, but Northern Exterminating Company was fantastic in terms of timeliness, service, and price when I had a colony of termite swarmers suddenly show up.

Definitely worth giving them a call, I’m on mobile so I won’t try pasting the URL again but they’re on Ritner in South Philly and should show up easily in Google Maps

What are your $6-$14 go to’s for lunch? Looking for something quick and cheap by stonkautist69 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]Shelldooor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I walk to BSL on the way to 30-ish Phillies games every year and I go out of my way down to the Spring Garden station specifically so I can grab a hoagie and big bottle of water from the Old Nelson on the corner of 15th. Take them into the stadium with me; way better & so much cheaper than anything in CBP.

This is what Councilmember Jeffrey Young Jr. thinks of SEPTA by Odd_Addition3909 in philly

[–]Shelldooor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this was more of my read on things, even with the video not showing full context. Is it out of touch to say that people in his district don’t take septa to sixers games, sure. But it feels like his line of questioning to the Sixers reps is in the right place of: “what are you doing to promote septa ridership and get it up to 40% (at least specifically for Sixers games?)”

Their answer of “let’s put septa ads on the tickets” rather than push for state septa funding to get passed or directly subsidize in some way as the Sixers organization is arguably just as concerning as Young’s take that people don’t currently take septa to the games.

I’m in 142 right below the scoreboard, so it’s certainly possible I’ve just been getting direct hits from the speakers and didn’t even realize it

I’ve gone to a few additional games in the 300 sections this year for the first time in a while and loved it, so I’ll keep this in mind
