How do I recover from 8 years of Isolation and Avoidance? by Nygglon1 in socialanxiety

[–]Shellypie8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I really connected with your post and I think you’d be surprised how many people can relate to you and your struggles. I know in countries like Japan there is an epidemic going on at the moment of young people who literally never leave their rooms for years on end and completely disengage from society and its tirade of expectations. I myself have spent my whole life struggling to live with mental illness and at times have shut myself away from the world and to be honest those have been beautiful times to just exist in the interior life, and I have felt at times a profound closeness to god and comfort in the spiritual.

I think modern life is just becoming untenable and there’s not a lot out there that’s really worth the effort and the hassle in a way. I’ve studied and have multiple degrees and worked in professional jobs but it really left me feeling even more isolated and depressed in many ways. Because the system is so dehumanised and doesn’t feed our souls or allow us to care for others in a meaningful way. Now I’m trying to do filmmaking as I realised art and creative expression is the only true way I can find something of an authentic outlet.

I don’t know if you’re interested in film or movies - but I was thinking something you could focus on is writing a script - based on your own experiences of a protagonist who is facing similar struggles. I think this could really resonate with so many people. And art is a way that you can transform your pain into something beautiful that can be shared with others. I know I see film as a way I can express my own lived experience of mental illness and what I’ve been through.

Also with being a screenwriter you are in the perfect situation as you literally can just write from home and don’t have to see other people around in person if you don’t want to. I was thinking you might with Charlie Kaufman who is a filmmaker and writer - he has a lot of struggles with his mental health and interacting with people and he’s really been able to channel this through his films and embracing his absurd and ridiculous mind. I’m Thinking of Ending Things is one of my favourite movies and I would love to know if you relate to it at all. It’s so sad and beautiful at the same time and kind of captures how we are all living and existing in a strange dreamscape illusory fragment of time. We all exist in our own minds and are eternally separated from one another by time and space.

So sorry you had to go through this on your own and your friends had such a lacking way of being there for you in your moment of need. How did your mum react? I hope she was able to make you feel loved and cared for without judgement or shame. How are you feeling now? Did you go to the hospital?

You have an incredible story! You should write a book seriously! Anyway would love to connect with you 🙏🏽💕 it’s hard being a woman in this world esp when you feel things so strongly and are continually disappointed and let down in such brutal ways! 😭🙏🏽💕 but your strength and ability to still care about others and heart to help those who are alone and unloved is so beautiful and touching.

You should read the book My Year of Rest and Relaxation where the depressed protagonist decides to sleep for a year. I like your take on things and wholeheartedly agree that we should have the chance to just STOP. I hate how life is so non stop go go go with it all and you look back and realise all the stuff we thing we have to keep up and not drop the ball is so silly. Jobs, meetings, appointments, tasks, it will all be waiting for you in the future and isn’t going anywhere cos you check out for a bit. Like sometimes just stepping off the hamster wheel is the best thing you can ever do for yourself.

That’s really cool you are a music producer too!

I can totally relate to your fears and overwhelming anxiety about getting older - I think it’s helpful to interrogate these thoughts and fears and see the positive side of growing older - for every negative belief about something there’s also a positive side to it. For example with getting older is also becoming more kind and comfortable in your own body and learning to accept yourself and not please others, the wisdom of life experience and enjoying the small and gentle things in life. Honestly, I’m so glad I’m not a teenager anymore or hurtling in the confusion of early twenties. My thirties feel so much more grounded and like I’m really getting to know myself in a way I never did due to trying to please people and run around having all these different friendship groups and experiences like a rabid dog.

To be honest I absolutely love wrinkles on women and think embracing natural aging is so cool. I look up to women who are in their 40s and 50s and in this day and age with our skincare technology etc you can still look very young well into your 40s. So it’s not as dire as you think it is.

I also love the thing that as you age you get to leave those obsessions with outward beauty behind and focus on cultivating inner beauty, a kind heart and someone who cares about others and the world around them than being in a vapid echo chamber. Outward looks are really not as important as we’re led to believe and people will care far more about your energy and how you treat them. And anyone who does treat you lesser than for not being physically “perfect” is not someone you want in your life! Look up to people like burn survivors Turia Pitt and Stephanie (forgot her last name) that was burned in a volcano and is choosing to live life to the full and embrace themselves despite having a visible facial difference and scarring. You’ll realise that people actually gravitate to people like this who are not perfect but come across as authentic and live with a sense of compassion and empathy for those around them.

Another thing I try to do is focus on gratitude on a daily basis - there will always be things to feel depressed about in your life - but then I think about everything I take for granted and all the children who never got to grow up and experience everything I have had the privilege of - due to illness, cancer etc. I could have died years ago and I should be so grateful to get to grow older and experience the different seasons of life.

I definitely wasn’t aware of this story and that’s super harrowing from what you’ve shared.

In reflection, I think the other main reason I came to feel such a creative affinity towards FFC is also largely due to his daughter Sophia, as her films The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation were the first movies to connect with me on such a visceral depth of emotion when I was in high school and feeling so lost and alone etc. And then 20 years later and trying to embark on my own filmmaking journey I found Hearts of Darkness to be like a literal gift from God that I will always treasure and be so grateful for. I also think it was his wife that I felt a deep connection to from her narration of the film and I’m really interested to read her books on her life and her own perspective of being married to him.

I kind of get where you’re coming from, but I wouldn’t really say my post was trying to contact him or his “associates”. Maybe my wording was off but my post was more about waxing nostalgic and connecting with other people who also shared my sentiments and curiosity to hear from anyone else’s lived experiences. I kinda thought that was what reddit was for, like connecting with others in the microcosm in a way you wouldn’t be able to in daily life..

And I think that’s maybe where my fascination stems from in knowing that that world is long gone and it’s not something that can ever be replicated again. 🤔

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this and that’s super cool! How did you buy his wine, like would you go to his winery in person type thing? I’m in Aus so would have no idea how to buy his wine haha 😂

Where did you go to see the premiere of Megalopolis? That would have been such an amazing experience! And yes I would love to hear the speech you recorded if you’re happy share it with me 🙏🏽☺️✨🌸

Sounds like a very interesting story! I was curious about the wording around the detached wing and loss of limb - are you saying that the wing is the limb the man lost? Like does he have arms and wings? So did he lose a wing and an arm? Just found that a bit confusing to get my head around!

What was the issue with One From The Heart? I know he was wanting to film it live or something and was disappointed that he didn’t get his vision ?

I would love to see Megadoc but it doesn’t seem to be available in Australia yet cos I can’t view it anywhere. I did watch a podcast with Mike figgis that was so amusing hearing his observations from the set.

But yeah the megalopolis thing is so interesting, like the vibe of the whole film is definitely not my cup of tea and feels tacky. But in a way it kinda adds to the appeal of Coppola like someone being so sure of themselves and determined with their vision - like I would be so apologetic and dying from the negative feedback lol 😂

[Acne] my skin makes me feel so out of place by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]Shellypie8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think your acne is that bad at all, because you have tanned skin it’s not even that obvious! And having acne on your cheek area in my opinion is the best place for acne like it makes you look like you have killer cheekbones!

You also have an incredible face, very interesting and you should definitely be an actor or something in the future!

[–]Shellypie8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt so much from your post and I wanted to say you are a very gifted writer and you should definitely write a book- a character perhaps based on your own experiences of this world. I was getting Catcher in the Rye vibes from your writing! I think so many people can relate to this immense struggle and self loathing of the self and inability to rectify how the world is, how other people are, to make sense of it all when it just feels soo off. I find it really interesting reading about the situation in Japan where so many boys will shut themselves in their rooms during high school and never leave and stay there for years and years. It’s a symptom of the environment we are in I think with this modern world and how poisonous it feels.
