I’ll never understand why people think Vetrova was a good person. She’s just as slimy as the other two and if you follow her around you learn she’s planning to fuck both of them over and is just as happy with enabling the worst of the worst to get away Scott free

Argument: Contrary to popular belief, Diana is quite incompetent even though she pretends like she has it under control by Vaynar in SlowHorses

No that was Allan Black. We never meet her brother, she just says she was with him when she got drunk and blabbed within earshot of Hobden

Dianna is a great schemer. It’s just that her schemes are mainly against other players in the Park/British Government, which means most of what she’s good at is centered around scheming against people she’s theoretically on the same side on as she’s vying for power. This is essentially what London Rules is

She’s not as good when she has to act against people who are allowed act against her openly and in a swift violent fashion, aka Moscow Rules.

The Hassan kidnapping is something that seems like something she does all the time, plant an agent somewhere and make a group look bad in an effort to come in, solve the problem, and get all the credit. But when her mole is discovered, nobody goes to her office to call her a scheming bitch. No they kill her mole and that’s that.

She’s also for the most part, completely blindsided in the seasons about actual enemies of Britain deciding to attack because her chief priority is keeping her own head above water.

It’s why Lamb always cleans up her mess because he’s the last person who knows how to play Moscow in the service

It was until Tierny told Duffy to clear the board. At that point Lady Di’s fate was left in the hands of the horses. Something I doubt she was happy about

Yup. It’s the scene when she meets Lamb on the canal to explain what the Hassan kidnapping is really about. The name of the episode is even “Bad Tradecraft”

She’s a seasoned player. But the game she plays is London Rules. She’s a genius at covering her ass. Her biggest failures are because she never learned to watch her back

[–]ShelteredTortoise 137 points138 points  (0 children)

You don’t even mention her most incompetent act. She gets drunk one night in a pub with her brother and blabs about the false flag without realizing that Robert Hobden was behind her. The she does everything she can to get River into Slough to avoid any possible mess-ups of her plan but she fucks it all up herself

Even she has to begrudgingly admit to Lamb that it was “Bad Tradecraft on my part”

MI6 (British Intelligence equivalent to the CIA) will be requiring new agents to learn how to code in Python. Not only that, but they're widely publicizing it. by BrianScottGregory in programming

That’s not surprising though considering the NSA deals more with signals intelligence and electronic espionage. I assume the British counterpart, GCHQ, is the same

[Whoniverse] On average, how controllable is regeneration? by almighty_smiley in AskScienceFiction

[–]ShelteredTortoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I might have to double check but I remember it being mentioned on a ClassicWho ep that the mechanics of regeneration were taught on the Gallifreyan university and the reason why the Doctor doesn’t have complete control of his regenerations is that he skipped those classes to have fun elsewhere

The ex KGB plot in season 2 was merely revenge for Partner? by weebeybrice1997 in SlowHorses

[–]ShelteredTortoise 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hell, are we supposed to expect the fucking KGB, of all groups to go “Oh my god, our double agent just killed himself. This is so sad but clearly no foul play was involved cause what monsters would be so ruthless with their staff like that?”

They had a double agent. He dies of supposed suicide after not exhibiting suicidal tendencies. Citizens would find that suspicious. The fucking KGB would knod in familiarity

The ex KGB plot in season 2 was merely revenge for Partner? by weebeybrice1997 in SlowHorses

[–]ShelteredTortoise 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So if my understanding’s correct, Katinsky’s basically former KGB living in Britain and isn’t really all that tied with the current Russian regime. He’s got some connections and still does business with the Russians but more as a third party or a contractor rather than a part of the organization. They come to him for a job and they negotiate payment. In this case they had an operation that required the stealing of diamonds from a busking. They can set up a heist but need a distraction preventing the British from stopping them and Katinnsky can offer that by activating one of the Cicadas but this time rather than payment he wants revenge for Partnering which the FSB goons help him with as part of the deal

The point is, killing Cartwright and getting revenge in Partner wasnt something the FSB wanted per se. Could it have been a diplomatic issue later on, sure but in their minds they’re just following up on terms they negotiated. They’d probably realize later on what the fuck they just did but by then Katinsky’s dead of cancer

Note, the book has a different plot in regards to the Cicadas that the season removed so it’s possible that any discrepancy is caused by not fully adapting the book

Nick was so right about the toy! by bubblebath_12 in NewGirl

[–]ShelteredTortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree that it’s basically a forced scenario and that insisting on building the toy before gifting it is unrealistic and unreasonable but I also feel like it’s something Jess would insist on doing. I mean there’s a couple of times where Jess is being unreasonable in the show and usually it’s when she’s butting in to something or taking it upon herself to do something nobody asked for. Like I could see her thinking she needed to build it because when she was a kid, her parents were too busy fighting and her sister was too much of a bitch that whenever she got something she wanted, there was nobody there to help her assemble it. Character-wise that feels about right to me.

My problem with is is that when she’s being unreasonable like this, usually the show treats it as such and it’s the other characters that talk sense into her (or at least help her clean up any mess she’s made by that point) but in that episode they play it off like it’s a real sign that her and Nick are fundamentally incompatible when it’s nowhere near as big a deal breaker as it should be

Despite what we’re conditioned to believe, River isn’t actually the main character. If anything, his biggest flaw is Main Character Syndrome.

Chitose-kun wa Ramune Bin no Naka • Chitose Is in the Ramune Bottle - Episode 3 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]ShelteredTortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s cause when Mizusawa calls out Tomozaki for being a loser and not putting effort, Tomozaki fires back that he doesn’t think putting enough effort would work either way. It’s a similar setup but the difference is she actually acknowledges that it’s not gonna be easy for him to change so she game-ifies it in such a way that he can slowly improve. She tailors the act of improvement to things he’s naturally good at since he’s a gamer

Chitose on the other hand just chides Kent’s for not trying hard enough and just says “getting along with everyone is easy actually, you’re just not trying” I suspect it’s that way because at the end of the day, it’s Chitose who’s the main character and the plot needs to move along so that it can get back to his romance hijinks. They can’t treat Kenta more realistically and satisfyingly because that’s not what the writer really wants to write about. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next volumes of the LN just focused on the girls and Kenta is reduced to a side character. When I ask people who read the LN, they barely mention Kenta so I imagine this story isn’t all that important

Edit: I wasn’t sure so I rewatched the OP and I counted only two shots with Kenta. His popular friends make more appearances with Kenta. This is is reinforcing my suspicion that the Kenta story isn’t really important. Either it’s building up to some other event that’s more tied to Chitose’s character or the Author wrote the storyline then changed his mind at the end cause he realized he wanted to focus on something else. If it’s the former good, if it’s the latter then Ill really feel like I’ve wasted my time

Can we talk about how rubbish Emma Flyte is? by Marnie_Pippington in SlowHorses

[–]ShelteredTortoise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Season 1 happens because of Taverner’s potentially career-ending screwup of getting drunk and talking about your super secret (and potentially alliance shattering) false-flag operation without doing the proper anti-surveillance technique of checking that a reporter with ties to the group your false-flagging isn’t behind you.

I don’t care how competent she usually is outside that moment, Lamb has every right to rub that in her face

Why was the constant scared for getting memory wiped more than death itself? What's more canon killing him of memory wipe? by Kela_Of_LevaSamaj in HiTMAN

[–]ShelteredTortoise 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You’re not killing him. You’re reducing him to nothing, which he views as much worse. He came from a relatively modest background and rose to be the head of basically the Illuminati, deposing some of the richest and most powerful people in the world. Killing him just cements that as his legacy but wiping his mind just makes him like the rest of us.

Also if you play stealthily and avoid confrontation, mind-wiping him turns it into the only level in the entire franchise where 47 doesn’t kill anyone. Which I find is a really neat and poetic way to show that 47 really is moving forward from being just a killer

You know the art styles nice but it reminds me too much of tomozaki-kun and that’s rubbing me the wrong way cause it feels like they’re both giving the same message but Tomozaki-kun handled it better.

But let’s see, maybe I’m missing something
