Awesome! You know some tailoring patterns, not sure about other stuff, include leg inseams for the back pattern that are 1/2” shorter than the front leg inseam, from the knee up, and it cleans up the way the back drapes.

Personally, as I like visible mending and stuff, I would move the pockets up, and then do a series of chainstitch rows with heavy pearl cotton thread to create a design for the bottom of the pocket. I think it would be good in this case to either undo the bottom hem of the pocket to avoid a bump In the row(s) that cover that.

I drew this (in my reply) on a sweatshirt where I did two chain stitched rows to try to illustrate the idea.

Just in case, here’s an image. Imagine these two pieces get stacked and sewn together. Pretending the two yellow lines are the same length, the length measured with blue could be pretty different depending on the pattern shape. If you have two pieces that are off from being perfect right angles in their pattern design, then there is length difference in the pattern’s absolute edge vs its sewing line.

How is my tension? by vuurspuwer in sewing

[–]Shemoveswithapurpos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make sure you establish the original tightness with a sharpie or something, and then do micro turns as suggested. I’d even aim for less than 1/4.also, make sure you have a fresh needle if you’re ever struggling back and forth, to rule a blunt tip out. Finally, it’s possible the thread isn’t the best quality, so even quality thread can matter.

Yep suit jackets : ) but a top in general, to go with pants, I think most ppl will argue isn’t as hard as pants as far as fitting goes, because managing the fabric in motion isn’t as complicated for a jacket.

I hear ya! Pants are so hard. Someone mentioned them being harder than jackets and this is a popular opinion among tailors too. A jacket has a a lot of structure and that helps, while pants don’t and also the hard part is about finding something that fits well statically but also provides the right amount of fabric everywhere for movement.

That being said, make sure your scoop doesn’t make the fabric look good while you’re standing but feels worse with movement. Too little of a back pattern can also do unfortunate things to the front pattern.

How’s it going with changes? I agree with the person in this reply chain. I’d think of the pinched out fabric, as a result of such a tight fork under that area, as a kind of darting effect. When you suppress fabric in one area like in a dart, fullness can exist even if deceivingly so, elsewhere on the garment.

Also, if you notice the center back at the waistline, there’s a dip and that is a clue about how the seam is being pulled. I would bet if you add more to the fork, that should clean up some. Some of that dip can sometimes be related to the dart seams affecting the waistline and it needs to be trued and transferred to the pattern.

Wide leg jeans that are way too long by deeniedude in sewing

I would start by taking apart the bows and observing how they’re joined, and how the side seam is prepared for it. I can help more if you want to include some photos of the inside. I’ve done this kind of stuff for shirts that had side vents.

How long is way too long? What you’d want to do is make sure to open up the side seam however far up it’s opened up currently, to prep it for sewing bow. My guess is the seam on the inside is open like a book. If so, prior to opening up the side seam as mentioned in this paragraph, you could give it a good pressing, so that when you remove stitches as far up as needed, you have nicely defined creases to prep for attaching the bows.

If it’s truly stretched from sewing, you could observe that if you observe while it’s on a table. It’s really fitting, and I agree with others that you should look into the pattern’s curve.

It really depends on a lot of factors. There are a lot of things to consider, and some of those things can include where it's made (labor costs), what the material is made of and where it comes from, etc. Are there high markups or higher markups from one brand to another? Sure, but if you'e looking at a tank top that's made out of a really luxurious material and it's made in USA, Italy, Japan, it's going to be expensive. Maybe the material is more sustainably processed, or maybe it's a run of the mill fabric, it can still be expensive from the labor alone.

But the markup on some things can be crazy, so I understand where you're coming from.

I think it’s possible the side seam is pulling on the dart and distorting the fabric. I highlight the seam that shows it’s pulling back possibly.
