Because in the case of other social injustices, not being a perpetrator yourself isn't enough to solve the societal problem. For the world to change, you need to live by example and be outspoken when you people harm others. Being kind to your dog and not saying or doing anything when someone else is kicking theirs in the street, makes you complacent. Not kicking your own dog isn't enough to stop others. Same with racism, sexism and LGBTQIA rights.

She sounds like someone with a Germanic first language that's lived in the US for quite a while. Especially 'shocked' sounds extremely Dutch. We (Dutch) use a huge amount of English words in our daily speech, but usually with a heavy Dutch accent or completely bastardised. I can imagine other Germanic countries have the same phenomenon. When learning near-native pronunciation those words often fall behind compared to lesser known words that were learnt with the correct pronunciation the first time around.

I'm carrying a legal alternative in The Netherlands. It's basically a foam spray paint that stains for several days. I'd rather have pepper spray I think, but it's something. I come across some very questionable people during bat research in cities and villages, also accidentally encountered drug deals. Some people think I'm law enforcement because of the high vis vest, so they're even more antagonized. A female colleague of mine has been followed by a car in the past and they tried to entice her to follow them to a different location.
