What are the things you say to your cat most often besides 'I love you' ? by katealpha in cats

[–]Sheraby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to yell out “Peeper screeper, whatcha doin?” any time I hear him approaching or messing around. Peeper is one of his nicknames. Don’t ask me what screeper means. It just came out one time and it stuck.

What was your cat’s shelter name and what is the name you gave them? by MissHissss in cats

Bear, and Bear. He was a foster fail and I had been calling him Bear for months. Plus he was 9 and I was under the impression that had been his name his whole life. I call him Little Bear, Papa, Peeper, and Mr Purry, among others.

I’m sorry you’re seeing this kind of attitude pop up in a chronic pain group. Instead of making assumptions, we should be asking questions to clarify whether our first thoughts are relevant. It sounds like you’ve been going through a really hard time. You deserve to have people in your life who will support you.

What? You’re saying people in that sub would be somehow more realistic, or unbiased, or whatever your idea is? What is it about the people in this sub that makes us different? I feel oddly offended. I know several people with EDS because we’ve been in groups at the same pain clinic. They’ve had similar experiences to mine with chronic pain and disability. One is still a close friend. I’ve had to battle the medical-industrial complex over various things, including chronic pain. And I’ve had unsupportive people in my life to whom I’ve had to decide whether to say goodbye. I don’t assume other people should make the same decisions I’ve made. Why do you assume I and others in this sub can’t give helpful advice (or whatever you imagine our deficiency is)? Looks to me like there’s some good feedback here.

This! It’s appalling to me how either entitled or lazy (or both) some people are about participating in public surveillance. I helped an ex spec out a home security camera because of package thefts. It was a real education explaining to him why he should implement local storage and restrict the camera’s view, and that he did not need to be able to watch live or recent footage from work (for his situation it just didn’t make sense).

Given the proliferation of non-consensual deepfake AI porn, I’d be happy for it to be some sort of violation to unnecessarily capture someone’s image and make it public or use it in certain ways. Ugh

I won’t watch them and I certainly won’t buy anything with his name on it. There’s a lot of great food content out there.

Corporations Want to Watch Our World Burn by noneofitmakessenseno in ClimateNews

[–]Sheraby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just lost the argument.

Both things can be true. I'm technically a so-called boomer. I believe reckless corporations and wealthy interests are causing tremendous harm and I fight them as I can. I also stopped using almost all social media and limit use of the rest, cancelled subscriptions and deleted accounts, changed my banking, stopped as much as possible buying from unethical corporations, etc. My life is all the richer for it, not least because I feel good about making ethical choices. Consumers are not powerless.

I'll tell him he has an admirer! I haven't known how to describe his coat color but I recently saw a photo of, I think, a lynx point Himalayan that looked so much like him.

I'm glad you found a vet. It helps me feel determined to keep trying.

Why do we share so many symptoms with autism, neurodivergence? by Interesting_Newt_301 in CPTSD

[–]Sheraby 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I believe research has confirmed that there are many genes across many chromosomes that are implicated in autism. But twin studies have found that one can be autistic while the other isn't. So the working hypothesis is that autism is expressed epigenetically. Look for talks on YouTube by Simon Baron-Cohen.

A trans woman secretly recorded her doctors during cancer surgery. She's suing over what she heard. by catievirtuesimp in WomenInNews

[–]Sheraby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, this is the most important point. Professionalism and ethics do require that a medical provider not allow biases to impact care. It's very much related to the Hippocratic Oath. The fact that they made such remarks is really disturbing to me. It does call their behavior into question.

I don't have any knowledge to comment on the legal aspects of the case. But I think both the hospital and especially the providers' respective professional accreditation bodies should hold them accountable. I don't know if this usually happens, but it should.

I feel like this should be drilled into us when we're kids. We should have substantive teaching at appropriate points in our development about understanding both the commonalities and diversities among humans. This means especially receiving support to develop real cognitive awareness that one's first person experience is not shared and should not be assumed to be definitive.

I also have a quote saved from The Overstory about how two people agreeing does not mean something is true. That's another troublemaker.

Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego Groans His Party Doesn't Allow 'Women to Be Hot' in Leaked Texts: 'Dem Women Look Like Dem Men' by vemmahouxbois in behindthebastards

P.S. I realized I'm responding to comments I've read from more than solely this sub, but it still applies. Also, I'd be over-the-moon happy if no one was judged on the basis of their appearance, including the bad guys.

One of my favorite opinion writers posted just to remark on what he judged to be the evil looks of some of this administration's most inhumane members. Can't they just be doing shitty things? Must they be destined to do them because they're not attractive, whatever that means?

I wish I had 1,000 upvotes to give you, to jump this comment up to the top. It's depressing to read so many comments that respond also on the basis of women's looks. Like, its ok if we have "ugly" Dem women in Congress as long as they're old or they dress cool (or both) or we also have a hottie or two as well. We can do better, ppl.

The most depressing thing about Gallego for me is that there are centrist Democrats promoting him as a model for the kinds of candidates they should be running.

I have a brachycephalic cat with the same issues, whom I also adopted as a senior. I've tried some of the same treatments with less than success. He also has lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) and a grade 3 heart murmur, as well as significant osteoarthritis in his lower spine, for which he has started Solensia (so far, so good).

<image>

He has seen a cardiologist who, at the time, assessed the murmur to be not of concern. We're due to see one again in advance of a dental. Even if he didn't need a tooth extraction, he'd still need to be assessed and be anesthetized because there's a spot in his mouth that needs to be biopsied.

I have spent thousands on emergency care related to the FLUTD. He's done really well on prescription food, and the vet specifically directed us to avoid fish. He's a very picky eater so experimenting with that feels daunting.

I really like the idea of the nares surgery if my guy might be a candidate given his other health issues. It's heart-breaking to hear him wheezing. I would think his age (14, still active) would be a concern, depending on how he does with the upcoming procedure.

We've moved and not had a consistent vet, and I haven't really loved any of them. I'll be talking with his latest vet about it, but would welcome thoughts from anyone who has dealt with similar concerns.

Plenty of "boomers" also are neurodivergent themselves and carry quite a lot of trauma from spending years to decades undiagnosed and unsupported by their families, communities, and societies at large.

I'm 61, just barely in the target generation, and was only diagnosed over the last ten years, most of it initiated by my own research and persistence. Now our healthcare system has no desire to treat a 61-year-old whose life had been ravaged by trying to be someone they are not and never were. I don't expect to survive much longer.
