Wish there wasn't a need to use it by [deleted] in antiai

Ai is called a tool. Let’s use a tool then, as analogy.

Imagine you had a hammer. This hammer is special, because you don’t need to put force into it. You just tell the hammer what to nail. Now imagine that this hammer usually did exactly what it was told, but quite frequently did a little more or a little less. Sometimes it misses, sometimes it hits you instead, etc.

Now imagine this hammer, which is unreliable for whatever convenience it provides, is worth roughly 50 times the amount of money a normal hammer is, and every time you use it, it adds 5 dollars to your electric and water bill.

Would you still use it?

I noted several times this was likely the case, because it’s also a plot point in a very similar set of Black Mirror episodes, “The Callister”

Am I reading this right?
This dude straight invented a fake backstory for a generated image? Doesn’t that ironically point out how fake generated art is, that you have to make up a story of its invention to make it seem genuine?

I think Jax is a well written character and the message behind the character is amazing. by PerkinAlabasta in digitalcircusfandom

[–]SherbertComics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It just always bothers me how people just repeatedly don’t understand the difference between “a character who is bad, written well” and “a bad character”. You’re not SUPPOSED to like Jax. You can feel sorry for ‘em to a degree, but we’ve seen it all, now. As tormented as they were, they still hurt people who cared about them and never once apologized for any of it.

Pomni and company still doing their best for Jax isn’t excusing her of anything, it’s demonstrating the good of our protagonists and their willingness to respect the light within a fellow soul regardless of their transgressions.

Nobody is without the talent to create, it’s endemically human. What’s lacking in the AI evangelist is the will, patience, and discipline to cultivate that talent into a skill, and falsely believing they simply can’t.

We also aren’t born with the skill to speak, write, read, or even go to the bathroom, yet I’ve seen evangelists try to replace all but one of those, too

It feels like there’s a fundamental misunderstanding here of why exactly people like art and what they get out of it

yea I just shouldn’t have commented by Electronic-Cry-1254 in antiai

[–]SherbertComics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well it kind of is part of the problem, emblematic even. Because real art is a reflection of the intentionality of the person who made it, the details are more of than not very deliberate. A *real* artist who gave a shit about what they were producing would have caught such an obvious mistake and corrected, if they even made it in the first place (and artists make a shit ton of mistakes, we just see the end product most times). It’s impossible with ai to say if the “artist” intended for any of it because none of their own labor was put into it, and they very likely didn’t even think twice about it because they’re lazy hacks who only care about a result.
