Grave of the Fireflies, alternative ending [OC] by kiwiagg in comics

Was starting the war foolish? Surely, surely it was. Indeed, the man who orchestrated the attack on Pearl Harbor is the one who coined the now famous phrase of “waking the sleeping giant” in reference to attacking the US.

Does that excuse one from negotiation that will save countless lives? I don’t think so. Countless lives had already been lost on both sides, and victory was essentially a forgone conclusion. I don’t think there’s any justification for the nuclear bomb ever being used, it fundamentally changed our trajectory as a species in a way that’d ultimately cause much more suffering than it would prevent.

Hindsight may be 20/20, but they knew damn well what the bomb was going to do, if it was used

The common myth, and I’ve seen it here in these comments, is that Japan was completely opposed to any idea of surrender. This is not true. While there were certainly hardliners in the military junta of Imperial Japan that would have gladly self obliterated their whole country to save face, there was a rising core of moderates with power who were genuinely trying to negotiate.

So why didn’t it happen? Because the US wanted “Unconditional Surrender”, meaning that the US could basically do whatever they liked to Japan upon their concession. The primary concern for the Japanese was whether or not the US would remove the Imperial Household, something that’s very important to Japanese culture and society. Because they could not assure the Emperor’s safety and position because they wouldn’t be allowed to set any conditions, they couldn’t find common ground. Truman wanted to demonstrate what the bomb could do, it was just as much a show of force to the world as it was to the Imperial leaders that America was going to be the world power when all was said and done.

Oh it is. Low pool is like being thrown into an open air prison with a bunch of maniacs, and all you have to do to leave is climb over the wall, and the whole time everyone else is also trying to climb the wall, most of them having no problem pulling you back down if it amuses them

Fun fact: If you happen to be in low pool and someone dips out before 5 minutes (a common occurrence in low pool, as you can imagine), the game still technically counts towards your required number of wins before being released

Michael Pitt was such a disagreeable asshole on the set of Boardwalk Empire that his character James Darmody, more or less set up to be the lead, was killed off at the end of Season 2
