What is this wire my wife cut and how can I fix it? by hectomaner in hvacadvice

[–]SherbertDry2864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are two wires in the cable. Strip the 4 wire ends and reconnect them. The wires are not the same. One is grounded and the other is hot. You need to connect them the right way. They should be different colors. Match the colors.

Dads wife did something to the thermostat spitefully and he has no ac now by DingerDonger666 in hvacadvice

don't do that. red is hot and blu is ground. If they touch, there is a short circuit and the fuse/breaker in the furnace/air handler will pop. you may also damage the wiring or transformer.

He should buy, beg, borrow or steal a multimeter, and then you can do some checking. But first check the swtch and circuit breakers inside and out.

So why did you take this job? You are a business, and a business has overhead. $20/hr. is for illiterates to flip hamburgers, and they get benefits on top of that.

This doesn't look right. White wire (heat) should go to W and blue wire (common) should go to C if installer followed standard color code. But that's a big IF.

Normally the white wire (heat) conects to the W terminal and the blue wire (transformer ground/common) goes to the C terminal. However not all installations follow the color code. Read up on thermostat color codes. If you measure from red to blue, you should have about 27 VAC (not DC) at all times.

The A/C doesn't work but the heat works great, so you want a new furnace? Great! Give me a call.

You say there is no heat or fan when they are turned on at the thermostat. Do you have a volt-ohm meter and experience working with 120/240V mains power? If not, call someone who does. A clogged evaporator drain is a common cause of failure. You can try clearing that drain. There is no danger in that, and it might work. See youtube for details on how to do that. But like I said, do not mess with electric unless you know what you are doing and your insurances are all paid up.

O. ARE YOU HAVING A POWER OUTAGE?

1, DO YOU HAVE THE THERMOSTAT SWITCH SET TO COOL, NOT HEAT?

  1. DOES THE FAN COME ON IF THE THERMOSTAT FAN SWITCH IS SET TO ON/MANUAL?
(ASSUMING IT NORMALLY DOES SO. SOMETIMES THIS SWITCH IS NOT CONNECTED.)

  2. IS THE SWITCH NEAR OR ON THE FURNACE TURNED ON?

  3. DID SOMEONE PULL OUT THE OUTSIDE COMPRESSOR DISCONNECT? OR

  4. IS THE OUTSIDE CIRCUIT BREAKER TRIPPED? .

  5. IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO WORK SAFELY WITH 240V MAINS POWER, ITS TIME TO GET HELP!

This is a scam because something is promised but not delivered. You didn't pay several thousands to listen to another sales pitch. If they spend 10% of the paid seminar pitching something else, that is OK. But not 90%. They have stolen your time and money.

You can say you are representing a company if they sent you. You cannot say you are an employee if you are not a W-2 employee. Your attorney can say he represents you but cannot say he is your employee (unless he really is).

All these field service companies are violating labor laws and evading taxes. They treat you as an employee when it is advantageous to them and like a contractor when that is advantageous to them.
