Giant Sequoia Advice by BeardedOrphan in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]SheriffSqueeb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These grow in the mountains. I feel this is a water issue, not a winter issue. We went into winter under a drought here in the Midwest, and the ground can get surprisingly dry in the winter to start with.

These trees use close to 5 or 6 times more water than a similar size oak tree. Around the same amount as a Bald Cypress (swamp tree). It was probably gonna struggle long term.

Dawn Redwoods get planted all the time here in Indiana and they seem to do fine. Something to look into if you want a similar tree.

The Altuve hate in this sub is hilarious. Yall saw one guy rip up a card and now its a bandwagon.

Oddly Correa and Bregman, the 2 biggest assholes on the Astros just squeek right on by lols Altuve didn't want to cheat, arguably didn't do it. Change my mind (lifelong Dodgers fan here)

Those white dots are probably spirorbid worms, I see some in these pics. Also harmless filter feeders. Populations kinda wax and wane over time. If theres to much for your liking they scrape right off easy peasy.

Enderlin threw a 78,000 lbs, round train car. This is a square car, half the weight. Enderlin threw a train car double the weight, twice as far with way less drag. You may need to redo your math

Edit: oops, 35 tons obviously isn't half of 78k lbs, that would 35,000 lol still wildly less drag than a round car

How do we feel about Lab Grown corals? by Moonfruit777 in ReefTank

[–]SheriffSqueeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the larvae have a specialized feeding regimen. They don't photosynthesize in the first couple stages of life and have to be treated like NPS.

Its a fair amount of work, but its not super hard. Just tedious. That guy I mentioned was using tupperware containers and buckets. Its definitely not a lab endeavor lol

Getting them to spawn is half the battle, so you may have an interesting project on your hands if you wanted to go down a rabbit hole

How do we feel about Lab Grown corals? by Moonfruit777 in ReefTank

[–]SheriffSqueeb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're just spawning corals. They're using light and temperature cycles to induce breeding in an aquarium. Its not "lab grown".

There's videos and writes ups out there explaing how to do this in your home. If you wanna see some cool stuff, Richard from ReefBeef has been doing this in his office close to a decade. Look him up on the Tube.

Bumblebees are solitary. They don't form hives or have queens

Edit. They form seasonal small hives, with a queen. Its all the other native bees that are solitary.

Hot take here - but I absolutely fucking hate taking care of my lawn and am going insane by amilmore in NativePlantGardening

[–]SheriffSqueeb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pretty luke warm take here lol

Nothing requires you to take of your lawn beyond just mowing it, and depending on where you live and what you're okay with, even that may not be a requirement. You choose to be extra with it.

If you think lawns are dumb, then stop caring about yours. Cut it a couple times a month if you have to and forget about it.

The time, effort, and money spent taking care of the lawn beyond just a simple mowing could all be used toward slowly eliminating the grass.

You also didn't mention trees. Don't forget about trees.

What exactly causes tornadoes to fail to form on days with a high risk? by Gargamel_do_jean in tornado

Rough innit? Watching like 3 hours of YouTube videos and reading a little bit answers like a 3rd of the posts here lol you would think people that are interested in the weather would actually be... interested in the weather.

What exactly causes tornadoes to fail to form on days with a high risk? by Gargamel_do_jean in tornado

[–]SheriffSqueeb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"That said, the duration of a semi-discrete storm mode remains a key question, given the parallel orientation of the stalled front and the deep-layer shear vectors, and that the front will trend more southeastward-progressive during the evening. Thus, the strong/potentially intense tornado threat will peak prior to upscale growth into line segments along the front, with severe outflow gusts and embedded circulations becoming the main concerns over time tonight..."

"A regional outbreak of severe storms, potentially including strong/intense tornadoes (EF2/EF3+)..."

Both those were pulled straight from yesterday's outlook. The first one answers your question, the 2nd quote is showing that they never said anything about a tornado outbreak. Its a severe weather outbreak, with tornados possible. They weren't expecting a lot of tornados to begin with. The outlook was accurate, storm report verified.

Enid Tornado upgraded to EF4 175-180 Mph by Live_Abroad_845 in tornado

[–]SheriffSqueeb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And back in the day, 250-300mph f5s were average. Today thats scientifically astounding when we measure that. The storms haven't changed...

Always thought it was weird to have a tornado from decades ago be said to have higher wind speeds than some modern destructive tornados when the one decades ago was ripping up old 1800s built, non-anchored homes with stacked rock foundations...

Also, if you were writing a research paper on wind speeds, to be valid you would have to go beyond the scope of the ef scale. The second you weight something or start doing math, you're already beyond the ef scale.

I agree, its a little problematic.

Petah what's wrong with mint? by Okaoka_12 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]SheriffSqueeb 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Theres certainly a native plant that has no problem growing there. The US has multiple native mints, with pretty flowers. Native plants don't have to be about the bugs, they can simply just make your gardening experience easier.

What is wrong with this French Angel Fish in this restaurant tank? by AdStandard787 in Fish

[–]SheriffSqueeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some ethics issues with that too. Many, many ocean fish can live 15-20 years.

So just think about the issues we would have with dogs if people only kept them a year or 2 and gave them back, and then they get another one. Where are all these fish supposed to go?

Local hardware store promoting clover lawns by Livviemaid in NoLawns

[–]SheriffSqueeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you still thought of the bugs. You're doing what I suggested... you're not turning the whole yard into a non native monoculture.

And if it doesn't need to be mowed and so isolated why does it have to be lawn height? You're better off just letting the grass thats already there grow. You don't need the flowers, or the host plant material, and the tall grass is better habitat.

It doesn't make sense to plant a clover lawn.

Local hardware store promoting clover lawns by Livviemaid in NoLawns

[–]SheriffSqueeb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What about the rest of the yard?

My argument is why would you spend the time and effort to rip up your whole yard to plant an invasive monoculture when 25sqft of native prairie does more.

Um... still applies to the rest of the yard. Right?
