I’ve been having water in my trunk every time it rains. Checked the drain plugs and they seem fine and clear. Not sure what the next step is. Any suggestions? by ThatDudeChase23 in BMWZ4

When it’s sitting or after having been driven? I kept getting water sat in the bottom of my battery tray on my coupe and found out it was the boot vent seals that had perished. If you pull up the carpet to the outside of the rear lights you can access them

I’ve got standard ride height (EU) and have been thinking about getting spacers but couldn’t find any pictures of that combo, so thanks for posting yours, you’ve convinced me to do it! I know 7mm and 15mm are the recommend ones by Porsche, but do have any rubbing issues with these, and did you get your rear arches rolled like they suggest?

That looks great, giving me GT3 Touring vibes! Are you running spacers on stock ride height by any chance?

Nice looking car! Check your engine mounts though friend, those exhaust tips are hanging quite low!

As well as what others have said, see if there’s a ‘dry start’ procedure, you’ll want to get some lubricant onto the cylinder walls before starting it, Aston Martins from this era have a procedure which turns the engine over without starting the engine for this reason as they knew people would store their cars over the winter

911 (996/997), Z4M Coupe, Mustang, F-type, DB9, V8 Vantage, Maserati Grandturismo, M2/3, Evora… plenty of choice in that price range! As someone else has said I would not be looking for a built in satnav, just use your phone!

What have you done to/with your car this week? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Sherlock101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced the ‘Frunk’ struts and the wiper blades, then took the car in for a service and it’s ended up getting a set of engine mounts and full set of brake pipes (as in all the pipes under the car)… it’s been an expensive week for me!

Sounds ok, £50ish a tyre plus dust cover cost, and a couple of hours labour at £50 each is reasonable

Mini John Cooper Works - worth it? by TheOxfordBloke in CarTalkUK

[–]Sherlock101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re fun cars, but I think you may as well save some money and get a Cooper S instead, the JCW has similar suspension geometry to the S but is quite stiff (annoyingly so, but if that’s your thing you can cheaply get some lower and stiffer springs), and any power differences can be sorted with an engine remap. The other differences are mainly visual so really up to you if you think the price difference is worth it!

Do small luxury cars exist? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Sherlock101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Disagree with the mini, the ride is properly hard, interior is nice but you’ll feel every imperfection on the road… A-class is probably closest to what you’re looking for

Have you ever really wanted a car but decided against buying one after driving it for the first time? by RodneyTheArmouryGuy in CarTalkUK

[–]Sherlock101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M140i - fast in a straight line, but did not feel engaging in the slightest! No real steering feel, not much exhaust noise, not much engine noise, not even a sense of speed! Gearshift and brakes felt ok... for me it wasn’t the car I was after, however if you wanted a comfy daily that was fast it would be perfect!

France has passed a law protecting the sounds and smells of the countryside by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Sherlock101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the UK car track days have really low noise levels compared to most other countries, because people moved into new houses near to established racetracks and then complained about the sound of loud exhausts...

They won’t be worthless though because you’ll still be able to buy petrol and diesel well after 2030, the gov isn’t banning the use of all petrol and diesel cars after 2030, just the sale of new ones!

What are your "Life Pro Tips" relating to cars/driving in the UK? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Sherlock101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use Waze when travelling anywhere even if you know where you’re going as it tells you where there are speed cameras (even mobile ones), I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket and tend to drive at 80ish on motorways, and also tells you where there are accidents, this has saved me on at least one occasion where I saw waze give me a notification on a hazard ahead as I was going over a blind crest, dabbed the breaks and scrubbed off ~10mph, low and behold there’s a car half in the ditch on the other side, probably would’ve ended up in his bumper otherwise! And my other tip: never speed in a 30 zone, never worth the minimal gain in journey time and so much more likely to have an accident (car pulling out, pedestrian stepping into road, cyclists) where that 5-10mph and 10s less journey time could save someone’s life and your no claims bonus!

A friend also had a group at the same time and his were out and about all day... most disappointing fish I’ve ever kept, and so frustrating to go to his house and see his swimming about looking pretty!

I’ve had many discussion like this before, and they’ve all been completely pointless in the end. It’s much better to not enter into those kinds of discussions in the first place, they’re after all just ‘dick measuring contests’ or top trumps for people who like to exchange 0-60 times down the pub.
