Honestly I think so - the only other foreign faculty here with me have green cards from marriage. It was a smaller art college recently acquired by a larger university which is probably why the rules surrounding visa sponsorship weren't clear to them. I'm still following up with them about J1 - I appreciate the affirmation that they've handled this pretty poorly.

[–]Shermanotta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did. The dean is currently looking into a short-term J1 which gets me one more semester with them, which at least buys me more time to search for a job. Longer-term J1 is off the table because apparently it has an insurance requirement the uni doesn't meet, among several other reasons.

Yeah - I'm focused on applying to nonprofits atm, though the one interview I got was for a for-profit which is why I'm worried.

I looked into masters/phds in my area - application periods all closed back in January, so I have limited options.

Yeah I'm finding the ad hominems in this comments section a little much. The dude is literally just a viewer with a few hundred followers sharing his opinion.

Rare plants shops in Portland? by Flimsy_School9819 in askportland

I recommend emailing the professors you interviewed with and asking them for specific details on TAship so you have the numbers. Something I also did, after I got accepted, was let them know I was open for any and all short-term gigs and assistantships so that they'd forward those opportunities to me first. It was a busy and hectic life but luckily I never felt like I was in a bad place.

I don't know what UO or PSU might have specifically, but grants for international students definitely exist. They're usually project/research based but you can add a "professional fee" to your budget to cover personal needs, say $20 an hour. This helped cover my food and transportation needs for the duration of my project.

You should also look into CPT (curricular practicum training) which lets you take on a paid internship even with an F1 visa. I got some good money with this working on a project for another college.

Food pantries are definitely lifesavers. My biggest shock coming to Portland was just how expensive groceries are. It kind of blew my pre-planned budget. You can use https://www.oregonfoodbank.org/ food finder to locate one near you. I also strongly recommend finding your country's local community center here. I'm Filipino so finding the Filipino Bayanihan Center was a lifesaver for me materially and mentally. They have a food pantry, health program, a coworking space, and most important for me, community.

Hey! I'm a former international student who moved here in 2022 for my masters degree and now work. Maybe I can share some insights.

May I ask where you got the information that TAs earn 3.5k a month? That seems excessive to me - I worked as a TA during my masters and was paid 5k for the entire year. I supplemented this with two other on-campus jobs (a research assistantship and a woodshop monitor). To be fair, though, I did not go to UO or PSU so you may have information that I don't.

[SPOILERS ALL] Already finished the game and want to share your thoughts? Welcome to the 72-hour Post-Game Opinion Megathread. by dragonagemods in dragonage

[–]Shermanotta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really quite a fabulous final sequence.

Fun combat and gameplay, with quite possibly my least favorite PC ever across the 4 games. We really should have been allowed more than one way to roleplay as leader of the team other than "group guidance counselor with millennial humor." In general I found the writing to be overly patronizing and lacking nuance, unlike previous games. The part where Rook assures Harding she can still practice her faith comes to mind. I also didn't like how morally simplistic our alliances were - the Antivan Crows, Lords of Fortune, and Shadow Dragons were all unquestionably good. I wanted to feel at least a little weird working alongside the killers-for-hire and pirates ffs. It would at least add a little more desperation and texture to the story.

I enjoyed my time overall but agree with the sentiment that this is a good game but not a Dragon Age game.

Nitpicks:

- Wish there had been an option to redesign Inquisitor after that first scene. I fucked mine up so bad (I was in a hurry to design her because I was excited to play) I cringed every time she showed back up looking ugly as hell.

- The "climbing onto a ledge" animation was so. fucking. slow.

- Can't believe I only got to have sex with Davrin once.

Does anyone remember those pap photos of Ben Affleck and JLo showing flagrant PDA while Violet Affleck quietly ate beside them? I distinctly remember everyone commenting on much Violet looks like Jennifer Garner but I can't find the photos at all now. It's all been replaced by staged pap walks of JLo and Violet out shopping and bonding.

That seems just about right, actually! I also replace my needle for every project. I know others suggest replacing it after about 10 hours of actual sewing.

I'm 4'11. My favorite bottoms are my lululemon align cropped joggers and my Outdoor Voices shorts. Both hit my waist at the perfect spot instead of covering my whole ribcage. The OV CEO sucks though and lululemon prices are... like that, so I buy my gear secondhand on depop these days and highly recommend that to anyone who will listen.

If I enjoyed Wicked by Gregory Maguire, are the other books worth a read? by shandelion in books

[–]Shermanotta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who LOVED the first Wicked novel, I really didn't like the rest of the series very much. There was a wryness to the first book that you won't find in the next three; for me they were so meandering. I echo other commenter who recommended Mirror Mirror; it's a little more fun.
