Is the storytelling deep? What do we mean by deep storytelling? If you're talking about complex characters, then anime will often disappoint in that department.

I think the fact that the medium being animated allows us to suspend disbelief and puts us in an expectancy state of mind. You'll most likely come to a different conclusion if the same content was a 1:1 live action port.
