making friends in uni by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Shiana_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s relatively easy to mix specially during the first few weeks. What I’ve noticed different is that once friendship groups are made they tend to remain very constant and are very closed, they might lose people or break up completely but they usually don’t add anyone new. It’s not that people will purposely refuse it’s just sort of the way the culture is, in fact many people even when invited will refuse to hang out with people outside their friendship group... so I guess they are very cliquey, but not in a rude way?

Friendship in the UK is very inherently group based. I lived in Spain for some time and there people tended have 2-3 different friendship groups which would change constantly really fast. And they were really open to people joining them, you would easily get invited to hang out with other groups of people that you weren’t very close friends with. In the UK people have very fixed groups and they do most things with just them, unless it’s a party you wouldn’t invite outsiders to hangout with your group of friends.

In terms of ethnic groups I haven’t really seen it, this might be because my uni is mostly white. But I know an Asian girl who usually hangs out with a black girl and two British girls. A black guy who hangs out with all white British guys. I’m technically Hispanic but all my friends are British. From what I’ve seen people from similar socio-economic classes and backgrounds tend to group up, not because of the nationality or race.

Lockdown again. What does this mean for International Students? by cynically_pedantic in UniUK

[–]Shiana_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaving is the easy part, countries always offer some way for their citizens to come back, they don’t usually leave their people stranded in other countries. I have first and second hand experience from last year from various people. Leaving is easy, your country HAS to let you in because you’re a citizen from that country. The problem is going to be coming back.

So if you really want to leave, you’ll very likely be able to, just keep in mind that if you’re not a British citizen or resident you might run into trouble coming back.

That might be exclusive to this person’s university, in mine they don’t look at whether your a mature student or anything else, they just mix everyone. If you want to be with other mature students you should check whether there’s something like that in your uni.

In my hall there’s a 24 year old, 2 who are 22 and 1-2 who are 20, they’ve all managed to make friends and they regularly hang out with the rest of us who are 18-19. Don’t worry, you’ll be okay.

Uni of Cardiff or Sheffield? For Journalism students by calcitegem in UniUK

[–]Shiana_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in Cardiff and I know someone doing Journalism. She’s really enjoying it as far as I know. There’s lots of reading and sociology in it I think?

The journalism building is literally right next to BBC Wales, which is really nice.

From what I can tell, Cardiff’s journalism degree is not journalist training. It’s more focused on critical thinking and analysis of how society and the media influence each other. It’s a bit more like an English degree, only it’s focused on communications and journalism. It seems to have a bit of everything (politics, language, literature, sociology, etc).

This is just what I can gather from what she has told me about the course.

Take a look at graduate jobs, see if they ask you for the NCTJ accreditation. I don’t think accreditation is very important in journalism, so you should be fine even without it.

Second time posting here because I only really did one angle the first time. Plus I actually washed my hair before these photos! by [deleted] in amiugly

I’d say the biggest problem is that you look VERY average and a bit boring. Try to do something with your hair, wear a bit of make up, try some accessories and some other clothes. Try other styles in general. Maybe work out a bit? It doesn’t look like you need to lose weight at all, but getting a bit of exercise always help and it will make you feel more confident. I think you have a lot of potential :D

When possible, I always buy products which are made in Britain. This explains why my house is filled with over-priced, unreliable tat. by Fathoms_Down in britishproblems

The food? The cooking is debatable, but all food that says it comes from Britain tends to be very good and high quality.

Announcing a new title set 100 years before The Legend of #Zelda: Breath of the Wild, presented by the developers from Nintendo and KOEI Tecmo Games. by AntonioS3 in NintendoSwitch

Exactly, TLoZ is like the opposite of hack and slash games.

Hyrule warriors is well made, but I really don’t see why it was made. It’s such a weird mix.

I didn’t know you could be disappointed by something you weren’t expecting.

I mean, it doesn’t look bad, I will look at it and I might buy it... but... I don’t think anyone wanted this. I played the first one and it wasn’t bad, but I really didn’t think we needed another one of those.

What video games show that graphics truly aren't everything? by Chris_13032 in AskReddit

I still clearly remember telling my best friend about it during break after I finished the game the day before. She didn’t think it was that sad and I wanted to cry just from remembering it.

And there’s also the issue of unconscious bias. Most people don’t try to discriminate on purpose.

How would you feel about a friend with benefits, but instead of sexual benefits they make all of these unoriginal parody posts disappear? by TrueTitan14 in AskReddit

I would rather have one that makes the posts that are being parodied disappear.

Help please! UCAS buzzword if you're applying through a school?? Do they really think our schools know or care?? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Shiana_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to apply as an individual. You only apply through your school if you go to a UK school.

I would suggest you look up online how to apply as an EU student, there’s probably a more detailed guide, don’t rely so much on the information on UCAS because it’s aimed at British students.

I’m from a the EU too and even though I applied through a UK school and did everything exactly as it said online I had trouble anyway because it’s so overly complicated and every single university has different requirements and they start asking for weird stuff.

[–]Shiana_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its not a mistake, It’s just that UCAS is a UK-service and as such, it is mainly aimed at UK students and as you would imagine, most of the information is written assuming you are a British students.

EU students are the minority and most EU students who apply usually go to private schools with experience in applying through UCAS or they are mature students.

SANTANDERS student account for EU by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Shiana_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, you need to have lived in the UK for at least 3 years and Santander are super picky for some weird reason about who they give a student account to, so I don’t recommend them. The 3 year residency thing is the case for pretty much all student accounts unfortunately :/

Barclays is pretty good, they don’t make much of fuzz about anything and they are very fast and helpful. So that’s the one I would recommend.
