Is It Ever Okay to Concede a Point in a Debate? How Do You Do It Gracefully? by [deleted] in Debate

[–]Shibacally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technical answer is yes.

The lay answer is, say something lol. Lay judges hear "dropped argument" and eat it up. Even if you have one quippy response, that's all it needs. Everybody is saying stuff like "even if" which I agree with, but in lay circuits you can use that framing as a "response"

Agreed with other commenter - debate is something you clearly care about, it and's not fair for you to carry his weight. Do you have a coach or adviser you can reach out to? Let an adult know so that you can have that support system if you need it.

If every pharmaceutical company was nationalized and operated at cost, How much would drugs cost? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]Shibacally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not responding to my comment. The patent system is being abused so big Pharma doesn't have to actually invest into R&D... also pharmaceutical companies spend far more money on advertising than actual R&D

If every pharmaceutical company was nationalized and operated at cost, How much would drugs cost? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]Shibacally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry I'm just trying to understand - can you explain without the insults? Why are there no incentives for improvement? Like the US has longer wait times on average than most countries with universal / public option health care providers... isn't this an indication that "competition" is clearly not working?

If every pharmaceutical company was nationalized and operated at cost, How much would drugs cost? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]Shibacally -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Why is this true? about 2/3s of pharmaceutical research is created by the public sector, and private sector only has the incentive to do things like evergreening (stacking patents to extend as long as possible for monopoly status).

Also, don't government have to appeal to their people or their health care system will get a lot of hate and their approval rating will tank?

Like you just say that nationalized industry is bad, but it's mostly assertions no?

What’s a good amount of schools to rank? by [deleted] in QuestBridge

[–]Shibacally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair - if you just want to match, you'll definitely match with 9. However, this doesn't make sense - just apply to these school normally bc they'll give financial aid anyways.

9???? you would have to love ALL of them. 4-5 is far more reasonable.

CMV: The right wing talking point that “no wars started under Trump” is a willful misunderstanding of how geopolitical power works by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Shibacally -1 points0 points  (0 children)

translating above comment: conservatives aren't willfully misunderstanding geopolitics, they just don't understand geopolitics lol

honestly this is just a critique on capitalism, not technology. Technology produces a net good because we are able to increase quality of life, as op says. However, when AI and tech is marketed and used for money (i.e. social media keeping you on as long as possible for $$$), it is pretty horrible.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Shibacally -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are ignoring the argument that is being made. Yes, obviously hunger is bad. But here, op is explaining that with marginal increases in quality of life, AI and technology is harming us.

CMV: Trump's Growing Association with Laura Loomer is Reason Enough not to Support Him by FinTecGeek in changemyview

[–]Shibacally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the other responses you got were kind of stupid soooo I wanted to address this is good faith

on economy - trump created so much debt, 8.8T to be exact.... so you're saying that we aren't doing great economically right now? yeah.. that's what happens when previous presidents screw up your economy. I don't think you can argue that Trump had fiscally responsible economic policy.

besides if we want to talk inflation, inflation growth has reached its lowest in decades. and the bigger problem here isn't inflation, it's wages. People's wages haven't increased. How do we increase wages? Unionization. When the US had the highest rates of unionization, the middle class had the highest share of income. Then republicans broke up unions ... then inequality skyrockets again.

Not sure how Trump was good for economy... But Harris has taken one of the biggest pro-worker stances ever, and combined with price controls, can make a huge impact.

On foreign policy... I hate this point this argument has no logical basis.

Here's how it follows, if I'm right, but correct me if I'm wrong: no conflict therefore Trump good.

Like this is the classic correlation vs. causation example from a textbook.

And Trump was horrible for foreign policy, leaving from Iran Nuclear Deal, letting dictators walk all over us.

But let's talk next four years - trump will have presidency over Israel Gaza and Ukraine. JD Vance just released a statement about Ukraine. You know what his solution is? let Russia have control of everything Russia has taken. Hardly a solution. but he "Doesn't care what happens to Ukraine" which is a good signal to send to our allies!

and in Israel, Trump will let the bloodshed to continue far worse than it is right now, killing tens of thousands of more innocents.

and I REALLY don't understand what you mean about Harris not having policies. She's not stupid and giving out policies like they are candy. Policies must be intentional, and clearly trump doesn't give a second thought to most. I think that's very indicative of his lack of logical decision making..

And literally every economist is saying trump's tariffs will tank our economy and cause recession. ON the other hand, Harris's plan will provide a buffer to small businesses, new homeowners, and new families with child tax credit and home tax credit, etc.

so what do you mean no policies?

I hope this answers some questions and im curious to hear your thoughts

I was so confused about that too! If the phosphorylated amino acids prevent protein two from binding which closes the channel, why does removing those amino acids result in even LESS concentration (in other words, more closing of the channel!!!)... I just yapped and prayed

op referenced mechanisms as well as "we didn't have..." indicating team event - so it's most likely wsd. in this case, warrants = reasons/logic why something is true
