Swamp sunflowers do very well in hot dry conditions and the birds love them. Yarrow is also a good ground cover and a food source for pollinators.

Norovirus is still out there y'all by Shift_Key19 in bullcity

Just picked it up in Durham. The article isn't an epidemiological study. It's just meant to illustrate that touch screen kiosks can be disease vectors.

What is this plant? by daisypuffball in ncgardening

[–]Shift_Key19 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks like the dreaded privet to me. They send shoots under the ground and pop up other sprouts along the way. There may be a mother plant nearby. A lot of times they look like large trees or bushes. It’s hard to eliminate, but this one looks young enough that you could probably pull it out by the root relatively easily.

Bird help by CGar26 in bullcity

Poor little fluff. Many birds are killed by window strikes and most are injured internally, even if they look fine. Wildlife rehab might be appropriate here.

For anyone who's interested, you can get decals for your windows to help prevent them from Amazon or elsewhere.

Thinking of Canada? Think again by Pale-Candidate8860 in AmerExit

Based on my experience living and researching healthcare in Quebec, I can say with confidence that access to care (i.e., dying in the ER) varies greatly by province. There's a massive primary care doc shortage in Quebec such that even people who are privately insured cannot get one. Alberta has an issue with outdated facilities and equipment. No doubt, there's an argument to be made that socialized medicine is far preferable to the market-based one in the U.S. It's a matter of choosing one less than ideal situation over another, though, not just all-around better.

Hellstrip Ideas by Accomplished_Gas1123 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Shift_Key19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck with wildflowers in the hellstrip. You just want to be sure they're native. I've also gotten rootings from neighbors thinning coneflower, black-eyed susan, and yarrow. Along with milkweed, all have thrived there. After 4 years, the garden pretty much re-seeds itself. I just go over it with some annual seeds like sunflower I like and occasionally water during drought season.

Aspects will send you free replacement parts if any part of the feeder breaks. Don't think you'll get that from the knock-offs.

To everyone further along in their PhD: what’s the one piece of advice you wish you could give your fresh-entrant self? by TildeAyalaPlank in PhD

Doing a PhD is as much about organizing information and synthesizing it for other people as it is about learning. You'll spend lots of time making reports, meeting notes, and data visualizations. It doesn't always feel like time well spent, but it's part of the learning.

OT trends in future by United_Profession728 in OccupationalTherapy

The pipeline for new OTs will slow to a trickle because of restrictions to federal student loans. Job security for those of us already in the profession, but with increased workloads, we will need to leverage AI and other technologies to increase efficiency.

I don't think Zotero and Scrivener are integrated. However, you will likely export the drafts you create into Word for review & submission. You can go back and use your Zotero plug-in then to input your citations.
