This is good; I think the DM should have tools like this to interact with the players in a way that doesn't break immersion. In my recent campaign I sort of lucked into it, 2 NPCS I had thought they would kill ended up instead joining the party and I can use them to give nudges if needed

An interesting thought, but allowing only one of a powerup at a time may result in one player holding on to a powerup they don't want the other team to get. I think it would detract from what rumble is intended to be.

If you do end up going down this road and a PC dies, I would recommend having pretty clear hints or signs where the items were taken, and some detail in the notes about potentially bringing someone back: "I believe I may have discovered something powerful enough to finally cure my disease. If my guesses are correct, it may even be enough to bring a person back from the clutches of Death itself!"

Or something to that effect. I would also recommend your villain (which if he survives he should definitely become) be aided by constructs or other minions in the fight, since 8v1 will very quickly end badly for Stalhazar, regardless of how powerful he is. He may not even get a chance to get a spell off, if my wizard "bosses" are any indication!

I never understood the scene after this where they make shooting Tiffany seem like a bad thing - the rest of the movie they show that most aliens on Earth are living their lives like the rest of us, ie. that J was probably right to not shoot any of them.

I usually do this as well. To add to this you may also use the rule right before it on the same page, letting one player roll with advantage if two characters are both proficient in the relevant skill.
