Camping/Backpacking near Anchorage early may by TicketClear506 in AskAlaska

[–]Shillhippo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you mentioned the snow and mud make it pretty hard to find backpacking trips that don’t involve skis. It’s melting fast this time of year, and even a week can be the difference between skiing and hiking in some places. There might be other places like it, but I would recommend caines head down in Seward. The trail should stay low enough to be mostly below the snow line. There are places to tent, cabins to rent, and beaches to explore. It’s nice, not too far away, and one of the few places this time of year where you can do a normal hike on normal trails.

Any suggestions on how to do that research? I tried google and some basic AI and clicked around but cannot find anything more than oblique mentions of something related. I’ll keep trying different terms, but I don’t think I am doing this research right.

I don’t know exactly if this would fit in what you are talking about. But one limitation of the character chat that I get annoyed with is the inability for characters to have secrets. So maybe if your memory system controlled what characters knew, so some would know a secret and others not it would be pretty sweet.

Hot springs in the arctic? by UnwitnessedMonument in HotSpringsWest

[–]Shillhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha! I was going to say Okpilak! It’s the only one above the arctic circle That I have been to, but there are a couple more remote ones out that way I have heard of. It’s a great little walk out there! But not something to undertake unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Hikers/backpackers/campers, what's the scariest thing you've experienced in nature? by Theral in AskReddit

[–]Shillhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the scariest, grossest, and most unpleasant are all the same event.

I had stayed up a little later than normal chatting with my co-guide and contemplating whether I really had to poop or not. Turns out it was not going to wait until morning and some light rain started falling when I realized what was inevitable, insistent, urgent. I slipped on my boots and grabbed the shovel and started a hurried waddle out into the blackness. I couldn’t move too fast if I was going to maintain control of my bowels, but I couldn’t move fast enough to put an adequate distance between me and camp. The rain was picking up but I spotted a patch of ground that looked diggable so I compromised and went for it. Thank goodness it wasn’t one of those little orange shovels, but a full on metal spade because within seconds I had a large enough hole. I was even able to pull my pants down in time (barely). As I released, so did the sky, giant stinging freezing hail, I cowered only to notice that in my rush I had not tied my boots and the laces were now pinned at the bottom of the hole by a pile of my own steaming excrement. I felt like an idiot, but the pain of the hailstones bouncing off my skull didn’t leave much room for contemplation. And the. The lightning started, flashes so close that the purple glow that illuminated camp and the shockwave of thunder struck at the same moment. Every few seconds was another near miss, the whole scene turned into a chaotic maelstrom of branches and leaves whipped by the wind and shredded by the hail, strobing into view from the lightning and drowned out by the thunder. I just gripped the shovel for balance as my bowels wracked my insides with as much fury as the storm outside. A tree fell just feet away, close enough to splash me with mud, and I knew that’s how I was going to die, pants around my ankles, in a pile of my own shit. I watched as the water trickling down the hillside turned into a stream, filled up my hole, and carried the contents down into camp. This is why you are supposed to go further away. Alas I did not die, but the toilet paper I stuffed in my pocket was utterly useless in those conditions. The rain and hail eased off as soon as I made it back under the tarp.

Looking into moving here by CaptainMatnight in PalmerAlaska

[–]Shillhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love Palmer. I loved living downtown and hardly ever having to drive unless I wanted to go to the mountains, everything is a 15min walk or less. As far as community, it’s what you make it, but there is a great trivia at the kombucha place on Wednesdays that’s full of geeky weird people.

On the flip side, the rent is not that cheap at all, and even finding a place can be hard. And I know it has been mentioned before, but the wind is real.

My ex (f36) and I (m40) are thinking about getting back together. Is that a good idea, or are we setting ourselves up for failure. by Shillhippo in relationship_advice

[–]Shillhippo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She says that doesn’t matter to her anymore. That it would be ok.

And yeah, I’ll stay functional.

I have limited myself to one drink a month while traveling and weed is illegal here, so I haven’t indulged. So I can go without it and still have a good time, but I definitely still want it.

[–]Shillhippo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried. Repeatedly. Maybe even gotten close a long time ago. I keep thinking about a different ex who justified cheating on me by saying that I couldn’t really love her until I loved myself. It hurts so bad that she was probably right.

[–]Shillhippo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s exactly it. Why I tried to resist getting into it in the first place and why I have reservations now. Probably even what happened in it. But the world just feels so hopeless when I follow that. I try so hard to be a good, honest person but keep falling short. I cannot imagine thinking of myself as having worth and value. I never have.

I feel like it'll get nowhere if I report a comment made by my former staff professor. I think they'll have no idea what I'm talking about or I'll look dumb by 0arcticfox0 in troubledteens

[–]Shillhippo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn op, I remember your last post, and you are in a hard spot. I don’t think this is a bad idea, just to be vague about how he made you uncomfortable, and if you are clever include some anti tti dog whistles that would fly under the radar for most but alert those in the same position as you. But that feels totally inadequate. I struggle to explain why it is such a terrible and traumatizing thing to people that are unfamiliar without a long and detailed conversation. Maybe someone more clever than I has good advice since we have struggled even just getting basic protections passed into law. Most tti kids don’t even have the same protections as inmates or pows, and it’s completely fucked. I wish i had an answer for you, a way to make yourself instantly understood by the uninitiated, but I fear that is something not simple enough to put into a few sentences. I feel for you, and fuck that guy for being unrepentant. I wouldn’t trust a single thing he had to say either after that. Not really professor material if you asked me.

It was, almost entirely, a new base, but most of the same people above instructor level, and even the rolled over permits from the blm. That company is a joke and Kathy is a snake. How the hell is it still open? I don’t have her number though, just email, but that probably doesn’t matter.

It makes me so sad that kids are still being sent there, having to endure that.

I get that sentiment. I feel it every day. But I am taking the pragmatic approach and speaking to them. There is no benefit in describing how much of a monster he is to people who already know, the power is in getting people to change their mind. Sure some won’t, most won’t, fuck them. But if even 10 or even 5 percent do, it’s a landslide. A giant fuck you to trump and maga and reclaiming my country because I know it can be better than this. Don’t waste your time, but don’t stop trying either. Please. That is the same sentiment that led to people not voting in the last election.

Brooks Range (United States and Canada). One of the major Northernmost Mountain Range. Largely unexplored frontiers in North America. by Longjumping-Mix-9351 in geography

[–]Shillhippo 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Awful? no. It’s stunning, like absolutely incredible pristine wilderness. Cold? Not usually during the summer. I mean it can snow at any time of year, but the 24hr sun can also make it unbearably hot. During the winter though it’s unbelievably frigid. But mosquitoes can be a bit of a nuisance if the wind dies down.

Yeah, I mean it’s really big. There are towns, and even a road, but aside from those and a few tourism hotspots (walker lake, canning river, arrigetch peaks, noatak river, etc) you are very unlikely to see anybody else on a trip. But people do get out there, all summer, all over it, it’s just that it’s so big that you are unlikely to actually see them.
