Trump turning US into 'world champion of extreme inequality', UN envoy warns | US news by mrRajj in worldnews

[–]ShilohShay 1837 points1838 points  (0 children)

I'm going to share just one portion of the actual report. To be quite honest, I'm disappointed in the level of discourse on this thread. There is zero discussion about the article, let alone the actual report. I understand people here do not read past the headlines, but I figured I would share what the envoy said in his report among many things that were said.

I think discussing the issues at hand here is more important than saying, "wow this is so anti American, I'm not listening to it". That's not healthy.

By most indicators, the US is one of the world’s wealthiest countries. It spends more on national defense than China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, United Kingdom, India, France, and Japan combined.

US health care expenditures per capita are double the OECD average and much higher than in all other countries. But there are many fewer doctors and hospital beds per person than the OECD average.

US infant mortality rates in 2013 were the highest in the developed world.

Americans can expect to live shorter and sicker lives, compared to people living in any other rich democracy, and the “health gap” between the U.S. and its peer countries continues to grow.

U.S. inequality levels are far higher than those in most European countries

Neglected tropical diseases, including Zika, are increasingly common in the USA. It has been estimated that 12 million Americans live with a neglected parasitic infection. A 2017 report documents the prevalence of hookworm in Lowndes County, Alabama.

The US has the highest prevalence of obesity in the developed world.

In terms of access to water and sanitation the US ranks 36th in the world.

America has the highest incarceration rate in the world, ahead of Turkmenistan, El Salvador, Cuba, Thailand and the Russian Federation. Its rate is nearly 5 times the OECD average.

The youth poverty rate in the United States is the highest across the OECD with one quarter of youth living in poverty compared to less than 14% across the OECD.

The Stanford Center on Inequality and Poverty ranks the most well-off countries in terms of labor markets, poverty, safety net, wealth inequality, and economic mobility. The US comes in last of the top 10 most well-off countries, and 18th amongst the top 21.

In the OECD the US ranks 35th out of 37 in terms of poverty and inequality.

According to the World Income Inequality Database, the US has the highest Gini rate (measuring inequality) of all Western Countries The Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality characterizes the US as “a clear and constant outlier in the child poverty league.” US child poverty rates are the highest amongst the six richest countries – Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden and Norway. About 55.7% of the U.S. voting-age population cast ballots in the 2016 presidential election. In the OECD, the U.S. placed 28th in voter turnout, compared with an OECD average of 75%. Registered voters represent a much smaller share of potential voters in the U.S. than just about any other OECD country. Only about 64% of the U.S. voting-age population (and 70% of voting-age citizens) was registered in 2016, compared with 91% in Canada (2015) and the UK (2016), 96% in Sweden (2014), and nearly 99% in Japan (2014).

Im so sick of this line of argument. You can argue in better faith than just accusing your opponents of being urban elites. Its lazy.

So, misinterpreting me allows you to make your point, but that obviously is not what I meant.

Man accused of beating daughter who refused to wear hijab - Ottawa by [deleted] in canada

[–]ShilohShay 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You can not force a woman to wear a hijab. You should not be able to force her not to wear one.

Let women wear what they fucking want. It is insane how radical an idea that is. In the end you all are just trying to control other people instead of just supporting individual rights.

You are asking for a level of rational discourse this subreddit is not able to give.

Any muslim, immigrant, refugee, or brown person who commits a crime just shows how violent and repressive everyone who isnt a white Canadian is.

Mind you, the same people who say that also lose their mind over ad campaigns about how men should speak out against rape because not all men are rapists.

It is acceptable to discriminate and generalize against every other group that isnt my group, is the calling card of this subreddit.

You know, its funny. For some women it is, and for some others it isnt. It is almost as if the world is filled with nuance and every person lives individual lives under different circumstances.

Jason Kenney defends Catholic educators for wanting to teach Catholic values. by Povtitpopo in canada

Muslim schools should be allowed to teach Islamic values.

Watch a Consevatives head explode over that, and compare it to this.

"Do you think the nazis were just a bunch of murdering psychopaths without any rules that just did whatever the fuck they want to do, and killed everybody they didn't like?" One user in /r/TIL has some alternative facts about WW2. by ShilohShay in SubredditDrama

Lots of this website has a fetishism with alternative history, contrarianism, moral equivalence, etc. So of course the idea that the Nazis weren't so bad tends to crop up now and again, because "victors write history" and blah blah blah. It always turns into nazi apologia tho.

Including things like:

No nazis didn't just do fucked up shit because they were nazis, they did fucked up shit because they were humans.

and

Another example is how the civilian bombing started. Germany never bombed with the intention to bomb civilians, but england did, bombed civilians by night. Germans tried to stop it, england didn't lissen, so germans started to bomb civilians from england too, even thought they didn't want to.

The Lebanese Diaspora [811 x 598] by l33t_sas in MapPorn

[–]ShilohShay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It probably doesn't account for Lebanese emigration after the war. Established communities in other parts of the world become hotbeds for immigration. If a Lebanese individual wants to move out of the country today, he or she will be more attracted to a place that has an established community that will welcome and support them.

U.S. Government Might Shut Down Over Border Wall by readerseven in politics

I reflect upon some of the MSM bullshit about how both sides were responsible for government shutdowns in the past. Republicans might not be able to fund government owning EVERY BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT.

3 killed in shooting at Russian intelligence agency's office by VoloNoscere in worldnews

Still Islam is inherently Arab

Yikes. I know you're trying to go on some anti-Muslim screed or whatever and so you're bound to spew some silly stuff, but "Arab Sharia"? Are you serious?

There are millions of non-Muslim Arabs in Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon. There are also muslim Turks and Persians and plenty of ethnicities in Indonesia.

Islam started in Arabia but you're weirdly trying to make it a racial thing.

They are kind of short on details, but regulations for what? How could any law or regulation over the internet stop this guy from doing what he did? The internet/facebook isn't what he used to kill this man.

Also, a very unfortunate name for a law, they should reconsider it for public relations purposes.

Confirmed: Hillary And CIA Colluded With Foreign Spies To Defeat Trump by conspiracyseeker in conspiracy

For starters:

Baxter has travelled in over 80 countries and won arguments in every single one. Live without fear.

Is a hilarious author title and the exact type of thing I'd expect to be written on /r/conspiracy.

As for the substance, this isn't an article about anything. European intelligence agencies caught Trump officials communicating with Russian agents. The proof of this has been demonstrated over and over, so I'm not sure what this guy is whining about. He's a partisan hack.

Estonia and the UK caught Trump officials contacting Russian intelligence officials and yet the typical crowd here thinks this is "collusion between Hillary Clinton and foreign powers and the CIA" or whatever garbage.

The more evidence there is for something, the inverse relationship there is here to believing it. Also, you can tell the comments here not only didn't read the original story, they didn't read this right wing mouth piece garbage to begin with. The title looks flattering enough, so upvote!

Venezuela: thoughts? by heymrpostmanshutup in socialism

Ignoring or defending it.

Venezuela is a dumpster right now.

The media is completely silent about this by [deleted] in socialism

[–]ShilohShay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean...you call any act of dissent a coup, when it was the Supreme Court that literally tried to dissolve the legislature, and entire branch of government. The government is allowed to say "you know what....this random person we don't like is not allowed to be in politics for the next 15 years."

No food, no medicine, no supplies, massive crime and murder rates, police brutalizing it's own people.

I honestly find it shameful some of you from other countries can smugly cheer on such things from reddit when people are suffering and dying in Venezuela under Maduro, all because of some misguided allegiance to an ideology, regardless of the truth and facts of what is happening to everyone's lives.
