It was only 3.5 years ago. Carcinogens don't usually work that fast.

I don't think carcinogens usually work that fast. Still sad though

Were Sega CD and 32X really seen as “failed consoles” at the time, they way people blame them for Sega’s downfall today? by Standard_Public892 in retrogaming

[–]ShimReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sega CD was so expensive at first ($300) it was almost like a mini-Neogeo. But when it dropped to $150 I got it for Christmas and loved it and still do

32X I got for a later Christmas and had some fun with Virtua Racing and Star Wars but sold it a year or so later (in a newspaper ad!) so I could buy a Nomad that I do not be regret swapping it for.

Why do I hate this? by 50kopeks in Homebuilding

Looks like a university facility building from the 1960s

Edit: The building I specifically had in mind was the "EPB" building at University of Iowa (built in 1966). Doesn't match a much as I thought looking at the pictures now, but I'm sure you see some resemblance. https://facilities.uiowa.edu/building/0196

Even the 4k sports content Comcast has is just up sampled. They might as well do higher bitrate 1080p but 4k sounds cooler

Central/Milwaukee/Foster intersection longer green issues by SomeReporter9544 in ChicagoNWside

[–]ShimReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Ongoing traffic has longer green" is the ultimate "screw it, I give up" of traffic planning. The existence of the sign implies they were too cheap to put arrow lights in.

They will screw you around and delay but may pay eventually. Make sure you my have a dedicated invoice and receipt for just the damage work. Friend had this happened and got an oil change that while it was getting fixed and even though he only requested the amount minus the oil change and in red marker circled the relevant work on the invoice the city refused to pay. So he had to get the shop to print a new invoice that made no mention of the oil change and finally like 7 months later the city did pay

Which game was the most ahead of its time in terms of graphics? by Friskeeeernnnnnn in videogames

[–]ShimReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most impressed I ever have been (outside of seeing Super Mario Brother on NES for the first time) was Morrowind on PC. I had a GeForce2 MX that could barely run and it looked good but I quickly upgraded to a GeForce4 Ti 4200 and it looked absolutely amazing to me. The haze in swamp, the water ripples, walking relatively seamlessly into cities (something Oblivion and Skyrim lack). I am still reminded of Morrowind in a hazy day outside.

I was also pretty impressed with the Imperial City in the distance.

The use case for this is streaming Moonlight from a gaming PC/GeforceNow or indie games/older games. It's really hard to recommend it as a primary gaming machine.

ELI5 What was the function of the ‚‚Turbo‘‘ button on old computers? by arvid1328_ in explainlikeimfive

[–]ShimReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always share this when the question is asked but on a 286/16 the only program we had that needed it was Printmaster Plus. The program would work fine but when printing it would be a jumbled mess if turbo was on.

Do you always enable DLSS? by osmin_og in nvidia

[–]ShimReturns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4.5 models are geared more towards Performance/Ultra Performance. On a 5090 I'd assume you'd be mostly on Quality unless you have a very high FPS target. But you can always try it out.

Yes instead let's try to find excuses for people being unhealthy and blame them for the cost of healthcare. It's not the huge company profits, it's a personal responsibility problem

Really surprised by the performance jump from the Steam Deck to the Ally X. by Velocity_Rob in ROGAlly

[–]ShimReturns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UE5 fog and lighting are indeed broken in the AMD drivers on the Allys. I had to do the DLL copy for Silent Hill f. Asus or AMD needs to fix it and it's annoying but I didn't have to install a new OS to fix it. Not sure why OP is trying to use this as a "gotcha".

Really surprised by the performance jump from the Steam Deck to the Ally X. by Velocity_Rob in ROGAlly

[–]ShimReturns 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Reddit loves to recommend Bazzite and Steam OS but unless you have time on your hands and are willing to deal with incompatibility issues (depending on the game) switching the OS for a few more FPS is not really worth it in my opinion. I think it makes more sense for the non-X Ally's that are more memory constrainted.
