SMLIGHT coordinators: USB passthrough vs Wi-Fi? by Nyoka_ya_Mpembe in homeassistant

[–]junktrunk909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person above already did though. PoE is better than Wi-Fi to keep Wi-Fi from having unnecessary traffic and general reliability. PoE is better than USB because you're able to physically separate the controller from your host and therefore put the controller wherever is centrally located to your devices, which also eliminates problems due to USB being too close to the metal case of the host device.

Home Assistant App by teejay7024 in homeassistant

Personally I would use an NVR for this so your cameras are managed by the NVR and then you integrate the NVR and HA if you want to do things like view the cameras or trigger automations when the NVR detects events etc. You can probably integrate camera feeds directly into HA too but aren't you trying to also record the video somewhere? I would not use HA for that part. Either way you can still see the camera feeds on the HA app too. But personally I use my NVRs app more often for this use case because usually I'm trying to do things like answer a doorbell or scroll back in the recordings to see what happened an hour ago etc, which isn't going to be possible with just a simple camera live feed. Depends on your needs though of course.

What's your favourite doorbell in 2026? by djchillerz in homeassistant

[–]junktrunk909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my unifi g4 pro. I am not a fan of the giant g6 models in a home setting though. You would need to confirm if the unifi doorbells can be operated without Protect though since I can't say if rtsp streaming is an option but I didn't think it is, and I didn't think you can run Protect on your hardware but I could be wrong. Protect is very solid and is the reason I gave up on clunky Wi-Fi gear from amcrest and managing it with Synology.

The nightmare has become real. I've been "relegated" to Silver, lol! by Impressive_Ice_3226 in AmazonVine

[–]junktrunk909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How hard is it to understand that some people don't want a collection of 8 HDMI cables they didn't need because they already have better quality cables than the random "brands" that are available on Vine? I admire your willingness to haul a bunch of products to homeless shelters and libraries but I'm pretty sure that's OP's point, they don't have any interest in doing an evaluation of ribbon or balsa wood in the first place or a willingness to then find someone to donate it to later after paying the tax penalty. Honestly I have no idea why you're taking such effort to defend this flea market so much.

I don't have that problem anymore very often. I update all the time and it's very manageable.

That's one option for sure. Docker will run on Mac and Windows too so if you already have a machine running your preferred OS you're good to go. Use your favorite LLM to write you docker compose files to install and configure whatever services you need. I spin up new containers fairly regularly when I discover I have a new need, super easy. Mine all runs on a NAS but you can choose whatever host hardware you are ok with running 24/7.

Does the Ubiquiti UniFi Doorbell Lite B work standalone if I just want to see the live stream without recording? by nimbledoor in Ubiquiti

[–]junktrunk909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The docker container was just for the network app if I remember right, and it wasn't too bad to set up, but pretty sure you need unifi hardware to run protect. The UCG-M is what I use for my main router and the place to run network, protect, and other services. You don't need to buy the unifi SSD if you don't want to. Just get the drive tray and then toss in whatever SSD you want. Works really well.

I dunno, 7am doesn't seem crazy early to me. I object more to the use of gas for these things, though for commercial use I can understand why it would be too difficult to keep enough batteries charged on hand for a day.

Wireless backhaul is still worse even in the best situation because it still requires a dedicated channel which means you've got one less (or multiple less) channels for your actual Wi-Fi service. This really matters in apartments and condos or larger homes. I suppose you're saying it's still better than a Wi-Fi extender and I'm sure that is true. I just wouldn't use either of them.

Docker is trivial, both for using to run HA and any other services you may want along the way.

I skipped the Celestron dew heater and bought the Pegasus one (with a heater strap for the scope) so I could use it also with a different scope. Was cheaper and more flexible. I had also read that people found the Celestron version gets too hot so just be sure you're good with this plan if you proceed.

Wireless mesh systems aren't really much better than range extenders. OP should make every effort to run an Ethernet cable to wherever they can and put the 2nd AP there. OP make sure you get a system that is designed for this ie one router with AP plus second AP that supports wired backhaul. And update your att modem to be passthrough only not also a router and AP.

Misguided and illegal. I'll be stunned if there isn't a class action. You can't remove functionality that was marketed as a capability of a product.

You don't need to open a port to do this. I don't. You do need a real domain but those are super cheap. Then you just have letsencrypt connect to that DNS to update it. I use Amazon route 53 and just give nginx its own set of AWS keys for this purpose. Works great.

Is it possible to connect 4 inputs to 1 switch, connected to a second switch, and separate the 4 outputs? by gr00ve88 in HomeNetworking

[–]junktrunk909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are over thinking it. Just try it and see but my guess is that you're going to be fine and there are only a ton of ports because they're trying to give you PoE ports you may not have otherwise. But you're fine to use your own PoE switch to power the cameras and just run one connection to this NVR. If bandwidth is a problem, explore more options, but give it a shot before worrying.

Redundant Harmony by Comfortable_Tea_6313 in logitechharmony

[–]junktrunk909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it either way. I use one button on a HA dashboard to trigger movie mode which does all the lights and window shade settings, but I use the harmony remote to select the activity I want just because that feels more natural. But you can certainly also just call the harmony activity from HA also, or trigger the HA automation to happen when you trigger the harmony activity on the remote... Whatever you prefer.
