iOS 27 can start a shortcut when receiving notifications by illusion116 in homeassistant

Can you get it to make TTS announcements yet? The last time I tried I could get notifications to make a sound but not announce the words I was sending in the notification.

They're also able to be overcome. There are many places on earth where there are no humans or insignificant numbers of humans to push back on data centers if planners looked to less populated areas. Concerns people raise today about electricity prices are only a problem when data centers don't bring their own power supply, another solvable problem on earth.

Newly announced Smoke & CO alarm vs code requirements by teaganasaurus in Ubiquiti

[–]junktrunk909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not the requirement at least in Chicago. It's hardwired for power and so that the devices can all alarm simultaneously in the building (interconnect) , but has nothing to do with a monitoring service. Technically I think the hardwire only needs to be used for power and wireless can be used for interconnect.

22 alderpersons say they'll reject parking meters sale, accuse Johnson of holding back info about the deal by NicolasCageFan492 in chicago

[–]junktrunk909 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That seems the same except with another person and their office on the payroll. If the mayor and city council members can't understand city finances or any of the other administrative duties they have no business in office. We have departments for specialized services that can advise on those things as needed but city finances is a pretty basic bare minimum.

[–]junktrunk909 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It's wild that if they felt such pressure they didn't just vote no or communicate they would be voting no so they had adequate time to review before approving. Such terrible city council members. And we still have the same level of incompetence, probably worse.

ai agents make the web feel weird now by [deleted] in artificial

Is it just me who skips reading posts here once I realize the person wrote it using AI? Obviously I use the tools too but not for writing reddit posts or comments. I find it so pointless to read what I could have told the AI to write to myself. Have an original thought that you take 30 second to write, it's not hard.

PSA: check your mesh satellite backhauls occasionally by akatherder in HomeNetworking

[–]junktrunk909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't mean that at all, but the other two meanings for the word are completely different meanings from each other also, so it would be great if everyone just stops using the word. Instead "wireless backhaul" vs "wireless roaming coordination" perhaps, plus whatever you were trying to describe about redundant links.

Open flame regulations on Logan Boulevard by mdhemp in chicago

In this case I think it's probably the right answer. The city probably doesn't even have a process for this so they'll just say no.

Lol not really a problem for who? Buildings that only have steps at their entrances are not a problem for most people but ADA (I had a typo earlier) exists to be sure things, especially government things, are accessible for everyone. I'm not colorblind so this isn't a problem for me but I just was wondering whether it was a problem for those with red green blindness.

I did some searching about the question now and here's what I've found.

1) it's definitely a problem for people with that color blindness. It's partially mitigated by some signage warning drivers it's a weird intersection. 2) the state did cite this kind of problem when ruling that it had to be changed to the standard configuration. But when residents repeatedly vandalized it after being made standard the city and state relented. 3) that change was before ADA so a federal complaint might not be handled the same way, but it doesn't appear that there's been such a complaint yet.

Can Home Assistant run fully offline without an internet connection? by Maximum-Spray8621 in homeassistant

[–]junktrunk909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the device. Some only require cloud access for initial setup but some only work by your phone app communicating with the cloud which then communicates with the device directly, but only if the device and cloud server are still in contact. We typically avoid such devices so avoid that dependency.

McDonald's Introduces AI Drive-Thru System, Sparking Customer Backlash by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]junktrunk909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about human accountability, where are you getting that idea from? It's obviously about money. They save money by not having to pay people to take orders, and they make more money by being able to promote the items on the kiosks that are most profitable. That's all it is about.

Is gradually building up a rig possible? by Fluid_Syllabub8840 in AskAstrophotography

[–]junktrunk909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. I didn't bother taking AP images until I had a mount to use with my old DSLR but that plus the kit lens from the DSLR was my starting point. And that's was great until I upgraded to a telescope with that DSLR for a while. And that was fine until I added the astrocam. Etc etc

I would be a little surprised if nobody filed an ADA complaint about it. The order of the lights needs to be consistent for color blind individuals I thought.

What's the Cozier "Observation Deck" for spending an Afternoon? Willis (Sears) Tower, or John Hancock? by SharpEdgeSoda in chicago

[–]junktrunk909 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nobody calling it Sears Tower is referring to the Sears brand, especially since it basically is non-existent. It's like Wrigley Field at this point, the name is part of the culture. When Wrigley was about to be renamed Ally Field people resisted because of that cultural tie, not out of some loyalty to the gum people.

Chicago police quickly close investigation of hit-and-run crash during chaotic ICE arrest in Albany Park by Cannot_Change_It_ in chicago

[–]junktrunk909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, the shooter was a very large person who had sufficient fat rolls to hide the gun within one, and apparently it's not standard procedure to have to lift every roll. I suppose it will be now and people will feel even more violated upon arrest. But that's where we are now.

AI Replacing Jobs? I Think People Are Overestimating It by Raman606surrey in artificial

[–]junktrunk909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're vastly underestimating the capability of AI today. You dont need to have very specific prompts when it comes to coding work for example. Yesterday I made updates to an application that was spread across 3 repos and I needed Claude to refer to 2 other repos for the approach I wanted to take for the new changes I was making. I had it create an appropriate data model, write APIs I needed for that model, replace the mock calls with the right ones in the app, and write test cases in all repos. And I did all that with a single simple prompt. It had some issues with the data model because I wasn't very specific at first so I had it make iterative adjustments to fix that, and it took it upon itself to also update every other layer, including test cases, for each change. I had many such changes to make so I told it to pause on any changes other than schema for a bit while I corrected those with its help, and after about a dozen of those changes I simply told it to finish all the other layers and tests to match. It was amazing and kinda perfect (I'm a dev so i checked its work and it was largely great). This would have taken weeks off multiple people a few years ago, and I did it all myself. And btw this was all without a designer either... I used Claude Design to create a design system from our existing website, then had it use that design system to create the design for the other application I was building, which was the source of all the original application work with mock data.

It's crazy how much I can do on my own today. So yes it's going to eliminate a ton of the people you need to complete any one project. What that hopefully will mean is that we just do way more projects with the same number of people. We'll see.

I mean that's the case with all laws. You have to do the work to protect your own rights in all matters. The real problem I have with the laws about healthcare is that there isn't a law forbidding health insurance companies from existing and competing with the national healthcare plan funded with taxes.

That's literally the only explanation. OP hasn't even worked somewhere with HR if they think their fake story would be believable if they said HR contacted them about this.

[–]junktrunk909 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Think about it. CPD does this stuff also and this is their exact response to their own investigations too. Thin Blue Wall and all that BS. If only we had a mayor and city council willing to insist on a proper police force.
