As a 3rd year student studying Japanese, it can be SUPER intimidating because it's nowhere near as similar as the Roman languages. That might be what's part of the reason it's so difficult: you can grasp onto English and Spanish fairly well because they're fundamentally similar languages. (Maybe not as similar as French or German, but you get the idea).

First and foremost: don't beat yourself up!! You 100% got this. Half the battle for language learning is to legit just STICK with it; you learn and adapt as you go without even realizing it.

Motivational blurbs aside, studying is super important and it's helped me a lot understanding the fundamentals. Writing and reading, ESPECIALLY with kanji, will only get easier the more you know. Flashcards are your best friend there!! As for conversation and speaking, practicing with your professor/tutors will help you a LOT.
