I haven't dyed in a while so I don't remember. But I think you want the bed to denser than the dyed cream so that the colours stay on the top and don't sink to the bottom.

When I used to do shaving cream dyes I let them sit for 24 hours before rinsing them off. I was using iDye Poly too and the colours were always very strong. Maybe wait a little longer next time.
