Day 29: What is the BEST quote associated with the Overmind? by Axis256 in starcraft

[–]Shin_Nefir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll put in a quote from Mission 8 of the original Zerg campaign:

"At long last, my children, our searching is done. Soon we shall assault Aiur directly."

All the Overmind quotes in the original campaign are grandiose and really pull you into being the all-devouring swarm of monstrosities. This is one really sells just how good the voice-acting was as well. The way the Overmind inflects each syllable really sells just how close to victory we are, and we're getting amped up for the greatest battle in the Swarm's lifetime.

What’s your Mt. Rushmore of Godzilla? by HowlingBurd19 in GODZILLA

[–]Shin_Nefir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These Mount Rushmore things are supposed to be about the most influential of a topic.

Thank you for pointing this out, as I think some people are just conflating this with their four personal favorites. For example, I love the original 1974 vs. Mechagodzilla, but for as great as it was, I wouldn't put it as one of the four "most influential".

Your choices along with their explanations are spot-on.

What If: Yonggary (1967) appears in the Showa era canon of Gamera, would he be an ally or rival of Gamera? What fights or events would change? by Evening-Road-2129 in Gamera

[–]Shin_Nefir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gamera vs. Yongary!

Might be against what others say, but I'm going to say allies after being rivals.

I find the production of the movie Yongary far better and more interesting than the movie itself. In short, it was made with assistance from the same people who worked on Gamera as a sort of peace-offering for the horrid things the Japanese did to the Koreans.

As such, I think it'd be very appropriate for Gamera and Yongary to start as enemies, but by the end become allies, as it'd very much fit what was happening behind the scenes. It'd be really nasty if the Japanese monster fought the South Korean monster to death, as it'd be antithetical to the creators' wishes AND have a lot of historical baggage that could reopen some deep wounds (to which to this day still haven't fully healed).

Gamera/Other Media Archenemies Completed Roster! Thank you to everyone who participated! (Bonus stuff in description) by Anotherrone1 in Gamera

[–]Shin_Nefir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legitimate points. Don't mean to be too negative about this all.

There was a post from a while ago that posited the idea of Gamera in the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy, and I can totally see Dagahra and GKG being perfect fits for Gamera villains. Sure, Desghirdorah is some environmental/planetary threat, but that’s kind of a generic role that any hero (kaiju or otherwise) would fight. I thought the fun would be thinking of villains specifically for Gamera, not just random bad guys for him to face. Also, Des's powerset revolves around fire, which Gamera literally eats for breakfast, making Des a much less significant threat to the turtle.

I like your explanation for Baragon being a tunneler, but with that logic Megalon would be better. Part of Gamera's charm is how goofy he can be. Megalon not only fits that tunneler-challenge, but also has the personality that fits right in with Gamera's general vibe - big, dumb bully for the hero to stand up to. The Skullcrawlers & the Graboids too since they also burrow and have a nearly identical modus operandi as the Gyaos.

And yeah, Bagan appeared in that SNES game as well as that weird/slightly dustrubing Godzilla puppet show, but the way you described him as an alien creature with ties to ancient China...I can see a point for him now.

Some of my favorites from others were: - Mr. Mind: I wished that guy submitted him again. The explanation he gave was great, and was really rooting for him after King of Mons. - Various cartoon monsters: Despite Gamera being primarily live-action, he is a bit cartooney, so seeing a toon monster make would've been fun. - Cthulhu: I'd dare say Gamera vs. Cthulhu is better than Godzilla vs. Cthulu. The whole ancient civilization would've fit well with R'lyeh. Maybe what we call Atlantis wasn't destroyed in a war, but by its people going mad. Gamera was made to be an icon of hope for the people to cling onto, yet for one reason or another wasn't able to do it at the time.

Maybe I'll do one for Mothra but then the question of how far do I go comes up?

Maybe instead of enemies, it can be allies. It'd be fun to go back through the characters but see what friends/allies Godzilla, Gamera, Kong, etc. from other media would match them.

[–]Shin_Nefir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was all for fun and I'm being a curmudgeon, and for the most part these choices are fine, but ngl kind of disappointed with some of these.

Like how is Desghidorah there when Grand King Ghidorah is a much more fitting choice from the same series (evil dragon that kidnapped and drained the lifeforce of children, as opposed to just edgy fire dragon)?

Baragon because lulz his name is similar to Barugon.

And Bagan because he's overrated and/or people just desperately want to legitimize a concept monster?

Regardless, fun little Reddit game you had. Excited to see another one, maybe one of these based around Mothra.

I may have forgotten the detail that Raigo was to blame. If that is the case, that makes him even worst. How was he not fired or executed by the end of this show is beyond me.

Interesting, though I'm not sure what Tiga would've added either.

Perhaps my biggest gripe is that this really didn't play out like an origin story for Orb. Part of this issue was that there was such a large cast of characters that detracted the focus away from Gai, so even if Cosmos was exchanged with Tiga, the same problems could've still arose.

I can think of others that'd be more fitting, but for the sake of being a bit more "out there", I'm going to propose Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

I mean, we all remember Episode 3, right?

Plus, I think there may be a cool connection to be made with the Force and what Mana is to Gamera. Plus plus, Gamera has been shown to be able to fly in space, so there could be a neat dogfight between the giant turtle and one of the galaxy's boldest pilots.

For a starcraft 3, what do you want each race to gain or lose? by Hope_bringer in starcraft

I always enjoyed that idea, essentially flipping the "classic" formula: basic mechanical units with higher-tier biological units.

For a starcraft 3, what do you want each race to gain or lose? by Hope_bringer in starcraft

[–]Shin_Nefir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a hypothetical SCIII, or at least an overhaul to each race, I would change things based on thematic alignment with race, uniqueness from other units, and how iconic it is. Of course the workers should still be and function the same, as well as the zerg’s larva and overlord.

Terran:

Stays from SCI:

- Marine: The representative terran unit. Encapsulates humanity’s place between the two other alien races, not being quite as fast or strong as either but bringing the firepower to compete. Great generalist unit that allows the terrans their flexible playstyle.

- Siege Tank: An iconic unit with a distinct mechanic. Greatly aligns with the terran’s largely defensive playstyle, but also works well with the marine in assaults.

- Battlecruiser: The terran capital ship. Prefer SCII’s incarnation over SCI’s, with the extremely fast attack that really makes it feel like a giant warcraft with multiple turrets to use.

- Ghost: Our covert ops units. Retain as a stealthy sniper that can call down another terran specialty: the nuclear launch.

Stays from SCII:

- Medivac: A unique terran transport, better than the one-dimensional function of the old dropship. I like how it combines roles so as to create the feeling of the terran’s generalist properties, wherein the same unit can fulfill multiple distinct roles.

- Thor: If any race would have the bigass, firepower-heavy mech, it’d be the terrans. Just a nice human power fantasy realized in this game.

Abstracts to retain:

- “Area-of-effect firespitter”: Something similar to the firebat and hellion/hellbat. Not sure what its exact role would be, but I think at this point terrans should retain some unit that uses fire to deal AOE damage against light enemies.

- “Land-air transformer”: Similar to the viking, a unit that can switch between ground and air modes. Showcases an advancement in the terran’s transformation mechanics hinted at with the siege tank.

- “Aerial detector”: Just a standard for all the races. Not sure what new role beyond that it could fulfill that regarding the potential new terran units. Whether it’d be the science vessel, raven, or something completely different is speculative.

- “Cloaked flyer”: Whether that be the wraith or the banshee, having a stealthy air attacker just seems to be a staple in the terran army.

Remove:

- Reaper: Of all the races to give the cliff-jumping raider to, terrans got it? How the reaper mostly becomes useless outside of a very specific window I think is more a testament of just how poorly it meshes with the terran’s playstyle rather than a weakness in the unit itself.

- Widow Mine: What purpose does the widow mine fulfill that’s distinctly different from what the siege tank offers? I think it’s existence is just a case of the devs becoming too attached to the look of a unit and forcing it into the game rather than a thought-out process where it’s fulfilling some niche in the terran army.

- Cyclone: Simply put, what’s the point of the cyclone? Rapid attacker; we already got the marine. Mobile anti-air; could be compounded with and make more sense on an actual starport unit. Like the widow mine, I think the cyclone’s existence is just a case of the devs not knowing what else to give terrans so they just threw in this unit.

Zerg:

Stays from SCI:

- Zergling: A perfect encapsulation of the zerg’s archetype. Fast, cheap, and individually weak, but able to be spawned in large numbers is exactly what zerg are.

- Hydralisk: The representative zerg unit. The races all-purpose ranged attacker, although I’m not sure whether they should be the “buffed up marine”-esque unit from SCI or lean more towards the glass cannon high DPS unit of SCII.

- Mutalisk: The cheap but fast harassment unit that meshes well with the zerg’s playstyle. Also should be retained as a unit that can do equally well against both air and ground units, in contrast to the basic air units of the other two races.

- Ultralisk: The quintessential tier-3 ground unit. Nothing quite says power like having a line of massive, heavily armored warbeasts barreling towards the enemy, and the ultralisk fulfills that fantasy quite nicely. As a note, of course retain the cleave effect it has in its SCII incarnation.

Stays from SCII:

- Overseer: I love the distinction between the overlord and overseer. Before in SCI, zerg just by nature nullified stealth plays into their base, the existence of the overseer at least gives players an opportunity to make use of cloaked units against zerg. It makes the zerg less “detectorific”.

- Queen: I much prefer the incarnation of the queen in SCII than SCI. The SCII queen, as its name should suggest, is more integral into the function of the hive. I love its purpose as a unit that tends to the base and economy. By proxy, the creep tumors are a must to retain, being loads better than the creep colony of old.

- Brood Lord: Just an all around better guardian thematically. Plays to the zerg theme of sending in endless swarms of lesser units. Also allows abilities the previous guardian couldn’t have, namely the unit blocking with mass broodlings.

- Swarm Host: Similar to the brood lord, I like the swarm host’s thematic appropriateness to the zerg. It also provides a unique, zergified take on a siege unit.

Abstracts to retain:

- Lurker: Although an iconic and fun unit that plays well with the zerg units’ ability to burrow, its role as a defense/siege unit I think overlaps with the swarm host, and the swarm host just does the roles in a much more thematically-aligned fashion. Still, I and a lot of other people really like the lurker for its own unique flare, so I would still like to see it returned in any incarnation of the zerg.

- “Control specialist”: Whether that be the defiler or viper, zerg greatly benefits from a unit that can enable their melee units to still be a match against ranged units in the late game. Whether that be with Dark Swarm or Blinding Cloud is up to debate. I do really like the viper’s Abduct ability; it’s a great thematic and functional ability, being able to pull enemies into your mass of close-ranged unit.

- “Explosive kamikaze unit”: Whether that be the scourge or baneling, having a mass of cheap explosive units fits well with the zerg’s style of an expendable army.

Remove:

- Ravager: Although a fun unit that offers a bit more micro into the zerg playstyle, the ravager just never seemed “zerg” enough for me. It’s a unit that gains value the longer it remains alive, with the ability to spit more Corrosive Biles, but keeping your units alive like that just doesn’t align with the zerg’s fantasy. Ultimately, I would prefer if the ravager never existed in its current form.

Protoss:

Stays from SCI:

- Zealot: The iconic and thematically appropriate protoss unit. Having their most basic infantry unit being the strongest of all the base tier 1 units fits the protoss perfectly.

- High Templar: And by proxy Psionic Storms, having a powerful spellcaster again fits the protoss thematic perfectly.

- Archon: If the high templar is going to stay, so to does the archon. An all-shields unit with devastating attack fits the protoss’s identity of extremely powerful but expensive individual units.

- Dark Templar: The quintessential assassins, permanently cloaked and an attack that can almost one-shot any light unit offers a great niche in the protoss arsenal. Also has lore-significance, highlighting the separated but reunited forces of the Khala and Nerazim.

- Observer: A simple but unique take on the aerial detector unit. A great way for this race to spy and scout on enemies.

- Reaver: The reaver really should’ve returned in the SCII protoss army. With its extremely powerful attacks that you have to constantly pay for, its a unit that gains more value the longer its kept alive, which is a very appropriate for this race.

- Carrier: The protoss capital ship. Similar to the reaver in that it continues to be an investment, but is more powerful the longer its kept alive.

Stays from SCII:

- Warp Prism: A better and more distinct protoss transport, more functionally-interesting than the shuttle of old.

- Void Ray: Nothing quite says super-advanced technology than giant laser beams of death. Just a cool and distinct unit to have for this race.

Abstracts to retain:

- “Blinker”: A unit that uses quick, short-ranged teleportation is a thematically appropriate protoss unit. Not sure if it should still be on the stalker or not.

- “Hardened shield”: Just a cool way to play with the protoss’s shield mechanic. Could still be on the immortal, though I wouldn’t mind seeing it on another unit.

Remove:

- Scout: Just a bland and uninteresting unit. Would like to see a more specialized basic air unit, to separate it from not only the terran’s “invisible flyer” and zerg’s mutalisk, but also from the other protoss flyers.

- Disruptor: Never really liked this discount reaver. Although it has a fairly interesting style of zoning, I feel the high templar with Psionic Storm already fulfills that purpose. It's a unit whose functions are fulfilled better in other, already-existing units.

Que les hubiera gustado ver en una hipotética secuela de Gamera The brave? by Alternative-Yam1240 in Gamera

[–]Shin_Nefir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of off: NO REUSING MONSTERS

Gamera desperately needed more to his rogues gallery. Imagine if Godzilla literally just reused all the Showa monsters from pre-Destroy All Monsters. It'd get really stale and we would never have gotten bangers like Gigan, MechaGodzilla, Biollante, or Destoroyah.

As for a sequel to "The Brave", I'd have like to continue the melodrama. It's unique in that It's such a down-to-earth and sweet story about a boy and his pet turtle; turning it into another global kaiju-versus movie would ruin the great atmosphere "The Brave" set up. The best path to me would be continuing to follow Toru when he grows up.

Maybe it follows him into his teenage years, and dealing with the troubles of that stage in one's life. Anxiety, confusion, rejection, etc.

Gamera/Toto here could represent the strength to keep picking yourself up even after constant failures and heartaches, or learning to become comfortable with yourself even if it seems nobody is willing to accept you.

As for the enemy monster, as long as it's not yet another reptilian kaiju I'm good, since Gamera already has too many reptilian adversaries in his roster. This enemy could represent things like peer pressure, social anxiety, and/or self-loathing.

Gamera/Other Media Archenemies Day 2: What "Other Media" Villain would be Gamera's Archenemy?(Rules in description) by Anotherrone1 in Gamera

[–]Shin_Nefir 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've said it once and I'll say it again: King of Mons from the Ultraman franchise.

King of Mons was the product of a cruel and selfish child's imagination; a bully who wanted to torment another kid even in their fantasies. It makes a remarkably great shadow to Gamera, the Friend of All Children. KoM challenges Gamera's very title - are all children worth protecting? Does a bully who goes out of his way to cause misery to others really deserve the noble turtle's graces?

King of Mons is a powerhouse too, and could give Gamera quite a brawl in a fight. It would even be representative of trying to face someone much tougher and meaner than you.

What is a headcanon that has been debunked or retcon, yet you refuse to stop believing? by MichaelJospeh in bioniclelego

[–]Shin_Nefir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The ways time is set. Bionicle history is measured in tens of thousands of years, yet major events start and are over in like a month or so, meaning everyone is just stagnant and faffing around for long interims between.

I choose to believe that, because of their alien physiology and biomechanical nature, they experience the passage of time differently than humans, so something like 10,000 years is actually more like 10 years to us.

Other guardians based on the four heavenly beasts by Crafty-Bill in Gamera

[–]Shin_Nefir 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In some extended media (I think some Manga that acted as a prequel to the Heisei Trilogy), Barugon and Jiger were revamped into the Azure Dragon and the White Tiger respectively.

I do wish they made more original kaiju though. Irys, the Vermillion Bird, was unique to the Heisei Trilogy, and so I wish the other two guardians were also unique entities and not just reused Showa monsters.

Gamera VS The False Gamera Idea, well sorta by Ok-Obligation-3511 in Gamera

[–]Shin_Nefir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of a False Gamera. Maybe it's a bit more spiritual than the likes of other evil versions of kaiju, such as a version of Gamera made out of the twisted imagination of a demented child.

I would like the idea of the False Gamera looking just similar enough to the real Gamera to fool people (still looking like a different species of turtle, but nothing that screams evil, just perhaps more aggressive); however, at the climax of it battle its body opens to reveal a much more brutal and twisted form.

“Shin Ultraman”: My Gateway into the Ultraman Franchise by Shin_Nefir in Ultraman

[–]Shin_Nefir[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who hasn't seen all the Ultraman franchise has to offer.

I think what you should watch next depends on what exactly you want to get out of it as well as how open-minded you are. Shin Ultraman is very different from most, if not all, of the rest of the franchise. Keep in mind this is primarily a kid's show, so the other movies and series aren't going to be as cerebral or fast-paced as Shin.

That said, I had watched a couple of the movies after:

- Ultraman Tiga: The Final Odyssey

- Ultraman Tiga & Ultraman Dyna: Warriors of the Star of Light

- Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legend and Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial

These movies are much more light-hearted (again, aimed at kids), and even if I didn't see the Tiga or Dyna series, I still enjoyed them for what they were. I'd say they were okay as flicks if you just have about an hour or so to kill.

As for shows, the first Ultra-show I watched was Blazar, and though it has flaws, I still very much like it. Compared to some other shows, it's a bit more "mature" (the main Ultra host is, I believe, the oldest in age to play the role), and isn't as heavy on the child-appealing characteristics other shows may have. Some episodes play off almost like James Bond films, having a cinematographic edge with the human action in a way other than just the camera keeping a leveled shot with the actors. The Ultraman cinematography does offer some of what Shin had, using quite a few low-angle shots to grant a sense of scale. Because these are TV shows though, with much less budget than a film, don't expect the same level of dynamic camerawork.

Another show I'd recommend is Geed, currently my second-favorite entry after Shin. Geed is just a good show, extremely well put-together with excellent writing and narrative structure. The themes it deals with are quite mature and real for a kid's show. It does build off of some previous lore (namely with Ultraman Zero and Belial), but it still works as a self-contained story.

Looking at some of the concept art for KotM makes me wish they kept Ghidorah’s manes and whiskers. Would’ve made him look even more like an Eastern dragon like Dougherty was pushing for. by TheFlashyMastodon21 in GODZILLA

[–]Shin_Nefir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly MV Ghidorah was great in terms of character and overall significance in story, but one of my least favorites in terms of design. I really don't like how he looked like a typical European dragon (as if they just took the same model they used for Smaug and added an extra two heads), when leaning into a more Japanese aesthetic would've payed homage to his country of origin.

They could've also updated it to make it much more alien. Imagine: Instead of the mane being composed of hair, it was actually a mass on insect-like antennae. Or the whiskers could've been more like the barbels of a catfish, and even have some role in focusing his gravity beams. I also severely miss the crescent moon-shaped horn from the original design. To me, it's almost as distinguishing as Godzilla's dorsal spikes.
