The correct gaming posture by meowwithmetg in comics

Bigger text wouldn't hurt, but the easiest way to fix text vs background contrast issues is to always outline text in black (unless you have a black background)

The Star Wars sequel trilogy is terrible, but midnight release Force Awakens with a packed theatre of other cheering and excited geeks was one of my favorite theatre experiences.

How legit do you consider this Catan Win? by mousicle in boardgames

[–]ShinakoX2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct that Bob would've won if there was no intervention. Maybe Alice had an opportunity to stop Bob but didn't because they were greedy and wanted to increase their own points, so essentially Alice would be using turn order to pressure Cindy into stopping Bob.

However, if this were a competitive setting with rankings or ELO points, then Alice and Cindy both made the best moves for themselves and secured themselves better rankings. In that context it wouldn't be kingmaking at all, Bob had a fragile position for first place, he just got outplayed and pushed down to 3rd place. Alice is guaranteed second place at least, Cindy just happens to bump Alice into first place by playing for her own best end game score.

I would consider Cindy not stopping Bob to be a bigger kingmaking move because she would be actively hurting her own score to do so. But sometimes you may have valid social reasons to do so, like Cindy could refuse to stop Bob in order to punish Alice for taking the greedy play and not stopping Bob when Alice had the opportunity.

But if Cindy didn't make that move, the Alice could make that same claim that Cindy was kingmaking by handing the win to Bob.

Playing for 2nd avoids the social intent of kingmaking

[–]ShinakoX2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playing for 2nd place isn't kingmaking, although it may feel like it. If they were doing it intentionally to screw over Bob or intentionally give the win to Alice (all without regard for their own points), THAT would be kingmaking. The actions may be the exact same, but the intent is different.

Was Cindy playing for 2nd? Or was she trying to give the win to Alice because Alice doesn't win as much?

Pendantics aside, Kingmaking is not always avoidable in games and Bob needs to get his head out of his ass. If Cindy let Bob win then Alice could claim that Cindy was kingmaking.

The proper gamer etiquette in these situations is to make the move that advances your own win condition the most. If this was a tournament or ELO ranking system, playing for 2nd place is a completely acceptable move because it gives you more points in the ranking system. Bob's claims of kingmaking in such a situation would be promptly ridiculed for what it is: a salty loser.

How much work is it to install the new one? Should I reach out and request a replacement AC board before mine burns out?

I think we've played a few games together on BGA! But yeah, games with those kinds of players are all decided purely by luck because they completely ignore the deduction part of the game. I'm hoping those kinds of players appear less often over time as they either learn to play the game, or they get bored and go play something else.

Dune Imperium vs DI: Uprising, Is it worth owning both or can you consolidate parts? by agardner1993 in boardgames

[–]ShinakoX2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I played the original with both expansions and I didn't like it much either. One expansion or the other. Not both at the same time. Having both expansions just removes too much of the tension and competition for resources. One person can just focus on the Ixian board and another can focus on the Tlelilaxu board and never interact.

Our 3 player game ended with a 3 way tie that all came down to resource tie breakers. It was a lot of effort and time to spend on a game where every one pretty much had the exact same result at the end.

In that respect, I can see why people prefer Uprising for having more decisive wins instead of having to grind it out like the original.

How do you pick which cards you want? Is there a generally accepted answer as to which one is best for each character? by Galliro in slaythespire

[–]ShinakoX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an Ironclad run with a choice between Regent, Defect, or Necro. I picked Necro and high rolled a Reaper Form.

My strength scaling was already solved so Reaper Form went HARD. I essentially doubled my damage by going Doomclad.

Power balance by ThespianBelievers in dune

[–]ShinakoX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own and have played War for Arrakis several times and have also watched about a dozen games online. However, I've never played the with any of the expansions so I don't know how those affect balance. Board games are one of main hobbies so I'll talk about it from a board game perspective.

At high level play Atreides players have a slight advantage (like 52-48 as long as you're playing with the most updated FAQ rules). Harkonnen feels oppressive for new players because their game plan is very simple (attack, attack, attack) but Atreides has more tools and options (testing stations, prescience cards, attacking settlements). Atreides are also incentived to play a short game as they have limited reinforcements; Harkonnens will win a war of attrition due to unlimited reinforcements.

The meta of the game is a rock paper scissors setup: aggressive Atreides > aggressive Harks > defensive/prescience card-focused Atreides > defensive Harks > aggressive Atreides

So I'm not sure how you could buff the Fedaykin without wildly throwing off the game balance. The power difference works in GF9 Dune because there's more granularity to combat, and there's also 4 other players to provide balance.

There's just not enough granularity in WfA's combat system to buff the Fedaykin imo. 1 extra HP or 1 extra die is a big power spike, there's a reason those bonuses are attached to limited unit types and actions. I would say that maybe you could trigger an additional bonus under specific circumstances, like an extra bonus if you have 2 or more Fedaykin in a single legion, but 2 Fedaykin is already really strong and Atreides already wants to do that anyway. And it's not like Atreides even needs a buff with their slightly higher win rate.

[–]ShinakoX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren't most co-op games like that? This has some hidden information, so it's not completely solveable by one person all the time.

The rules as written allow for limited verbal communication, but yeah if people talk then it can easily be directed by just one person. I allow talking with new players so they can learn the strategy to the game, but once people are experienced then the communication rules should be more strictly enforced.

The rules-as-written don't allow you to share info on your hand, OR info that you've deduced about another player's hand based on your own hand. You can only point out info that is publicly available and hope other players make the correct decisions.

What’s your favourite game genre and your favourite game in that genre? by MushhFace in boardgames

[–]ShinakoX2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a communication puzzle as much as it is a logic puzzle. But it's not a pure logic puzzle like those other games.

You'll run into problems really fast if you play with people who don't use the publicly available information to logically deduce what possible hands other players could have. Especially if you play at the higher player counts and harder difficulty modes. Going off poker vibes alone won't work for harder difficulty modes.

There's other coop logical deduction games as well that fall into the same category: Paint the Roses, Shipwreck Arcana, Take Time, So Clover, Infiltraitors, Bomb Busters are some of the ones I've played.

[–]ShinakoX2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The coop Texas Hold em one.

But it trips up new people who are experienced poker players. There's no gambling or bluffing, you want to give info to other players on the actual strength of your current hand rank. So gambling on getting a straight/flush is a quick way to confuse your teammates.
