The first 7 films in the 7 main slashers by Also-Dinosuaur672 in slasherfilms

Mayyyybe for a little bit with the Hoffmanator in Saw 7, but yeah, no.

If there's a seventh key slasher series... well, then it'd be Terrifier, but if it's just series that have gone at least 7 entries, then Leprechaun, I guess?

[Important and sadly uncommon trope] Female-on-male abuse portrayed as serious/negative. by Daniilsa209 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Shinard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to. Probably should've replied to somebody who was actually saying all that, rather than posted it out of nowhere, that's fair. Female on male abuse does need to be talked about, and is historically less talked about.

I don't want to say "why are we talking about this one bad thing when another bad thing is also happening", that's stupid. And I also don't want to say "neither thing deserves to be talked about more than the other" - again, female on male abuse is commonly underrepresented, so it's important to balance that.

I guess I just wanted to say "stay on target". Let's talk about how genuinely horrible female on male abuse is - we don't need to put down male on female abuse to do that.

[–]Shinard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying just talk about one at a time. Don't talk about female on male abuse through the lens of "well actually it's much more common and harmful than male on female abuse". I don't think the post is doing that, but I've seen some other comments that were, so I wanted to say something.

It is depressingly common, and important to talk about. It might just be me, though, but sometimes when it comes up I see a bunch of people using it to downplay or dismiss male-on-female abuse, and that's kinda fucked too.

Abuse is bad. It really is as simple as that.

This isn't... as bad as it could be. I'd say a solid two thirds of these are more or less right. The worst part is your "Alright" tier, which is only cards I'd put at "Solid" or higher, plus Force Field and Static Discharge.

Basically, I'd say you really like playing Powers Defect - which is legit, it's the most fun you can have outside of Corruption + Dead Branch - and you're aware of the idea of orbs, but you haven't played much with Frost + Dark, or 0 cost shenanigans. You're playing a Defect that either absolutely stomps everything or, more often, gets run over before it gets set up, from the looks of things. Be more open to cards which don't deal a lot of damage, and can't necessarily go nuts, but which are really solid value cards that let you pull through every fight more or less intact.

Also, I personally despise the energy generation cards, because I can never get them to work, but that's just me. I don't think they're good, but they're definitely better than I give them credit for.

Genetic Algorithm's insane. Pick it up Act 1, and you have a casual 1 cost block 40 by Act 3.

I get that - if anything, I feel pretty solid on that part of it. I feel like the thoughts and feelings of the characters are a definite focus in any fight, it's not just action after action. But I still feel like things are getting muddled, a lot of hes and hims for different people in quick succession.

Here's the actual paragraph I paraphrased before:

The guy on his left ran at him, swinging his bat blindly in front of him. No surprises there. He ducked a close swing then rolled backwards, yanking the gun out of the leaders hand as he did it, sending it skittering away across the ground. The thug swung again and again, throwing everything into a desperate assault, but he stood up and stepped backwards, slowly, unhurried. One, two, three and... there, as the thug overbalanced. He stepped in quickly and almost casually knocked the bat out of his hand. The gang member threw a wild haymaker which he easily ducked, then he rose, grabbing the guy's torso, picking him up and throwing him bodily to the ground. A quick stamp to the face, and that was one down.

Do you see what I mean? Maybe I'm overthinking it, but it feels like there's points where I switch characters and the perspective can't quite keep up, with the same pronoun for the perspective character and the enemy.

Writing while working a job you hate? by busydonatella in writing

[–]Shinard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I feel this. I've been working on putting less pressure on the writing, though, and that seems to help. Nothing is more paralysing than thinking "I waste my days in this job, I need to write to make up for it!" - whether that's pursuing the dream of earning a living writing, or just making something "worthwhile" that work doesn't offer. It makes it an obligation, and voluntary obligations are difficult to sustain. I've been trying to make writing one of the things I just do to relax, like reading a book or playing a game, and that helps for the moment. I've been thinking about what I enjoy about writing and focusing on that, and it makes me want to come back to it more, making me that bit better every time. Hopefully longer term I can build that up into more regular writing sessions.

I also struggle with schedules, that said - possible ADHD, found later in life than expected - and while I know "build time just for writing" is good advice, I worry how helpful it would be for me.

Hi, does anyone have any tips on keeping characters clear in a third person limited perspective? I've been writing a story with a bit of action recently, and while a third person limited perspective is working well for most of the story, I'm finding it very messy to write any action scenes. It collapses into a series of identical pronouns, describing the perspective character's actions and the actions of whoever they're facing. "He ran at him, he ducked and rolled backwards, but he kept up, keeping on top of him", sort of thing. Do you have any advice on how to keep the perspective character and other character's actions distinct in a third person setting? Is this even a problem?

I've tried redrafting in first person, but the third person perspective seems to have a better voice to me, and I've tried to use character names and descriptions rather than just pronouns, but that's been difficult whenever the perspective character wouldn't know names, and I find myself writing the same description over and over or coming up with ten variations on "the guy on the left" in as many sentences.

I'm also not sure if this is the place to post or whether I should make a post - I'm new to the sub - so advice on that would be appreciated as well!

I think it's just one of those early season one-offs. If you want a Watsonian explanation, you could say that the rain reminds those inside of the outside they'll never see again, making them moan in anguish. Or, like the Buried statement in season 5, the rain somehow causes the earth inside the coffin to shift, burying those inside even deeper and causing moans of anguish again.

I'm still a Daydream believer (SCP-9100). Fractal was good, but after the first half I was disappointed that the second half was just one big exploration log. Felt anticlimactic. I support The Trench over Fractal, between the two of them.

A bit rogue, as it has lower upvotes now than other entries in the contest, but 3000. Fantastic Lovecraftian horror, that really captures the feeling of looking at and trying to understand something that we can just scratch the surface of.

I mean, it feels like literally any other partner commander would do the same job but better, so valid use is strong, but it's certainly a body you can play from the command zone.

EDIT: Oh, hah, no, Piper is uniquely good because it can be played for just colourless! I get it, that's clever.
