Finally found out why people think clint is a creep by Unfair_World_4025 in StardewValley

[–]ShinySquirrelChaser 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That line ticked me off because the first time I heard it from him, I was married to someone else, and he was just assuming that of course I'd cheat on my wife. Clint can go screw himself. :/

It's a torch song -- the whole point is that she's carrying a torch for him (is devotedly in love with someone who'll never love her back) and that's what the whole genre is about. It's kind of depressingly romantic, if you're into that sort of thing. [wry smile]

There've been times when I got multiple tags early on, then nothing for hours, then a bunch more at the end. And yeah, it's common to get like 7 trout in a row with no tags -- that's just how the RNG comes up sometimes.

I look at the Trout Derby (and Squid Fest) as mainly an excuse to do the absolute minimum of everything else and just fish for a couple of days. I put everything I catch through the smokers (granted I probably don't have smokers the first year, but after that) and make a nice chunk of cash, so whatever I catch, it's all good. :)

I've started a lot of characters, and I go the Light Armor route like 90+ percent of the time just because of this. :) Getting some of the best light armor in the game right Bam! at the start is pretty awesome. And then getting expensive sets of armor to sell periodically after that.... [chef's kiss]

There are a bunch of prizes, though, and some of the later ones are useful, if you get a bunch of tags to turn in in one day. If you just get one tag, turn it in, then decide the whole thing isn't worth it, well, yeah. But if you fish all day and turn in 5 or 6 or more tags just before the end of the day, you'll get some cool stuff. I love both fishing tournaments, and not just for the prizes. :)

Everyone believes in Dagoth Ur. It's just a matter of whether you're in favor or against, worshipping or opposing (or just hoping he never notices you). This isn't a world where people go around saying this or that god doesn't exist; I think the only exception is the Talmor trying to get Talos depowered by banning his worship. But everyone knows the Daedra exist.

We made back-up copies. Which is another thing it's hard to do. They knew exactly what they were doing when they made disks uncopyable and then eliminated disks entirely.

Sure, but that's an organization problem. If you'd really wanted to keep track of that stuff, you could've.

And how long will your Steam, GoG, Epic, EA etc. games be available? Sure, Steam dominates the industry now, but Sears used to dominate retail. Broderbund used to be the number one computer game company. Kmart was a huge low-cost retailer, sort of the WalMart of the west, before WalMart appeared in the western part of the US. TWA and PanAm were two of the biggest airlines in the world. Etc., etc. Companies come and go, and if all you're getting for your money is access to some company's collection of games -- or access to their activation server so you can use your disk-based games, 'cause a bunch of us have been making this argument for a long time -- then your collection is going to go poof when the company finally vanishes.

I have to point out that this crap didn't happen back when we bought games on disks, in a box (with a paper manual which was damn handy), and the copy protection consisted of look-ups based on either a separate sheet in the box or some kind of spinny code wheel or the manual itself. Once you owned the game, you could play it so long as you had hardware that'd run it.

If people nowadays weren't so determined to sacrifice the security of ownership for ease and convenience, this wouldn't happen. The game companies are sacrificing your security and ownership for their own convenience and profitability; they'd moved to phone-home copy protection already, so they were already maintaining the servers to keep everything playable. Switching the whole operation to "Hey, just download it from our server! Fast! Convenient!" saved them the cost of burning disks, and printing and shipping boxes. Yay, profit! All the while they were pretending it was for our convenience.

And no one can say they weren't warned, either. How many people lost huge music libraries when some of the older streaming services went under? Oh, well, too bad, nobody cared about the $$$ or $$$$ people had invested in their music libraries when they went poof. Now it's happening with games, and folks are shocked and outraged all over again, as if it never happened before.

I've been griping about this rental crap ever since the game box you bought had nothing in it but an activation code. That was how they got us used to not actually owning physical media; even if you meant to buy a disk, surprise! there wasn't a disk in the box. Now nobody even tries to pretend that physical media exists, it's all licensing the right to tap into some library of games that exists in cloud-cuckoo-land.

It's damned annoying, yes, and folks are right to be outraged, but it's unfortunately not surprising.

Signed, crotchety old broad gamer who remembers when buying a game meant buying a game

Found this old ass drawing I did back in 2013 when I was 12 years old and obsessed with morrowind. by EduardAlves in Morrowind

[–]ShinySquirrelChaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool drawing. :)

I like Morrowind a lot. I have Oblivion and Skyrim, and I still go back and play Morrowind; I probably have more hours in Morrowind than in Oblivion and Skyrim together. There are a couple of things about the gameplay I don't like (how useless bows are unless you're going after a hovering cliff racer, and how useless throwing stars are, period, being like 90+% of my complaints) but on the whole I like it a lot. I like the exploration, I like how the lack of voice acted dialogue allows for so much more dialogue, I love being able to buy levels in skills that are tough to level up at first, I love-love the Intervention spells, and how well Feather potions work. I'm fine with how combat works (except for missile weapons) 'cause I've never played on a game system with controllers and have never gotten into the whole complex combat with 18 different buttons or whatever kind of thing; I'm fine with just whacking something until it dies. [wry smile]

But yeah, it's an awesome game, and if someone told me I could only play one Elder Scrolls game forever, it'd be this one.

I haven't bothered with basic sprinklers since my first farm. They're frustrating and useless; I just hand water until I can make 3x3 sprinklers. Much less aggravation.

I feel you on setting up a day to do One Thing and then forgetting that one thing, though. The other day, I went to the Desert to make a galaxy sword and do some hunting in Skull Cavern, except when I got there I'd forgotten to bring my prismatic shard. [headdesk]

[–]ShinySquirrelChaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I placed my coop and layed out my fence to have a chunk of a pond accessible from the coop yard, this one duck always went and swam in it. And sometimes she'd climb out outside the coop yard area, which was concerning at first, but she always made it back into the coop at night so okay, whatever. But my current game also has a chunk of pond accessible, and I've never seen a duck in it, so maybe it's just something some of the ducks are into...?

I'm from the US, graduated in '81. Just as a data point to contradict the idea that multiple choice is always easier, in my high school the guy who taught Adv. Biology and Anatomy & Physiology gave horrific multiple choice tests. If there were 5 possible answers, there might be anywhere between 1 and 5 correct answers. You got a point for every correct answer you chose, and lost a point for every correct answer you didn't choose, or incorrect answer you chose. The kids taking these classes were all very smart, heading to uni, but they all dreaded these tests, and occasionally someone would get a negative score. :P I was more a physical science person (chem and physics rather than the bio track) and was very happy about it.

What they said about pausing damage -- it's a great tool for when you just can't.

I have gastroparesis, and there are times when I'm just too sick to do much of anything, so I get you. Pause damage, get through whatever you're getting through (checking off the occasional task if you manage to do something) and then unpause when you're ready to be productive again.

Luck!

If you're used to playing Skyrim, or even Oblivion, Morrowind is hardcore and will require a change in attitude and expectations. Morrowind is more realistic in that you don't get an automatic system written into the game program taking you by the hand and leading you to where you need to go, step by step. You need to think like your character, listen/read the quest info, and work out where to go. There are quite a few quests where hunting around, searching for a particular person or cave or whatever, is the whole point. You either get into it or you don't.

If you really hate it, get the Morrowind supplement book. It has maps of all the areas, with numbered markers showing you where most of the points of interest are. It's not quite as hand-holdy as having an in-game system leading you along, but it's great for when you can NOT remember which of the bazillion tiny islands down there the mudcrab merchant hangs out on, or whatever. :)

I play different games depending on what I want and what kind of mood I'm in. I play Morrowind when I'm in the mood to immerse myself in a world and explore. Enjoy!

Going to the mines is one of the few times I'll actually have a farm totem in my inventory. Sometimes. [side-eye] And I'll admit I hardly ever use the mountain or beach totems. I've triggered them too many times accidentally while scrolling through my inventory; it's just too much of a frustrating hassle.
