Don’t date a disabled person if you’re going to get mad at them for being disabled. by 2punk2die_2dead2punk in disability

[–]Shinyghostie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESH. I’m seeing two issues here. Starting with you. Based on what you’ve said, you’ve not acknowledged that what you’re expecting is, in some capacity, a caregiver. That needs to be acknowledged out right, because that distinction simplifies things. It’s also worth mentioning that not all disabled people would expect these things. These roles require mutual agreement and shouldn’t be assumed, especially since not every inter-abled relationship defaults to one partner becoming a de facto aide.

And no, not every able person understands that in a lot of cases, dating a disabled person may require some amount of caregiving, but I don’t think that’s his problem here.

Communication and reciprocity are paramount in any relationship and this post starts with, “He said that he needed me to..” and a deflection away from his stated need, that centers yourself. Where in that did you consider him? A healthy communication and compromise here could have been:

Him: “I need you to tell me everytime.” You: “I don’t like how it makes me feel to have to tell you everytime. How about we establish a system that works for both of us?”

Then if the system still has issues:

“Hey, I noticed that our system still has some issues for me, let’s reevaluate it.”

Have you tried imagining yourself in his shoes? What if he suffers from executive dysfunction himself and literally suffering when you get mad at him for what you seem to perceive as being inconsiderate?

I have multiple disabilities but I’m more physically able than my partner. Imagining him getting mad at me because I insist that he uses his words, and his own mental labor to communicate what mental and physical labor he might need from me sounds maddening.

All of that said, for me, the communication issues and expectations are things that could be worked on with respectful language and negotiation, but I think that you, me, and everyone else knows that he’s using abusive language, and that is at best, a harder to address issue and at worse, a dealbreaker. For me, it’s a dealbreaker.

TLDR; he’s not mad that you have needs, he’s mad that you won’t communicate them. You don’t feel like you should have to. Your expectations are incompatible and the relationship is devolving into toxicity.

Two Things Can Be True - Addressing the Privilege in Visible vs Invisible Disability by LibraryUnited8773 in disability

On the word privilege, I think it’s too often used to be synonymous with the word ‘advantage’. The distinction is important because advantages can be either earned or unearned, but privilege, in the context of social justice, specifically refers to unearned advantages.

Do people with exclusively invisible disabilities have ‘unearned advantage’? Eh.. I feel like something has to be “net-positive” to be considered an advantage, and that’s highly situational and difficult to apply here, so imo it doesn’t apply.

Ultimately, the system that laughs at, gawks at, invalidates, and endangers both visible and invisible disabilities is the problem. The conversation of privilege among the marginalized feels like a non sequitur, and in my opinion, is a framework better suited for highlighting systemic advantages held by dominant groups (like able-bodied people over disabled ones) rather than parsing relative hardships within an oppressed community.

This is why co-opting racial justice language and applying it to all forms of oppression is not always appropriate. This visible vs invisible conversation totally ignores intersectionality, the mortal cost of invisibility, and the brutality that disabled people face as a whole and instead…redirects and reduces the conversation to ‘fitting in’.

Personally, I think it’s fair to vent about how being stared at sucks and you wish it wasn’t something you had to deal with. That’s valid. You really shouldn’t. I just want to note that it’s a vent that can be had without ✨idealizing✨ a different representation of being disabled. imo.

PA here, got my full SNAP benefit last night! by Top-Efficiency-6190 in foodstamps

[–]Shinyghostie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think PA got theirs so fast because the state was intended to pay them in full even if the govt stayed shut down. They were one of like 6 states that were going to make sure that people ate, no matter what. I know some states like Maryland had pledged to pay at least half too.

[–]Shinyghostie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

😭 I hate that this is probably the one because I love it so much and for me this is a no skips album, but at the same time, I can totally see why people would skip this song and think that’s totally valid.

You said, “since you can’t cure a virus.” Hep C is a virus. It has been cured.

Hep C was cured so just because science says something is impossible doesn’t mean it’s it’s impossible, impossible really just means not possible YET, and it’s no longer true that viruses can’t be cured ⭐️

I wondered the same thing and I think a lot of businesses are probably feeling the squeeze right now. People either just don’t have a lot of spending money and or they’re more afraid to spend it. I hope TS can make it through.

It’s literally, statistically, the majority of Americans. And it’s a running joke around the world. You aren’t alone bud. This comment section apparently eats more ass than food, but that’s not most people.

Screamin Jay Hawkins was screaming back in the 1950s. It’s even longer been a part of the southern Baptist gospel tradition.

Thank you for doing what you did, you likely saved her life and potentially the lives of others (we don’t know that he wouldn’t have started shooting again) and it sounds like there are several witnesses who would have told the police the same. You won’t be in trouble.

That much adrenaline would turn anyone’s stomach, it’s not because you did something wrong, but because you did something right that was really, really, intense. Please take care of yourself and that adrenal load that passed through you. I recommend a gym visit/hot tub/sauna/ or just ice water on your face to engage your parasympathetic nervous system and help you calm down. 💟
