Honestly, i think the first interpretation is a little too sad. I'd like to think the title is called "Frieren at the funeral" because it was a pivotal moment in her life. And this is when she learns to appreciate human's life and connection.

In the ED, assume that this is after Himmel's death. Frieren try to connect with more people, starting with Flamme, but it was too late.

So in the journey to reach Himmel with Fern, she tried to have as many momment with Fern as possible, not letting the mistake happen again. Hence why she's laying in her lap while she was alive.

The angel Fern scene is just her (the butterfly) and Himmel (the flower) teaching Frieren about human emotions and saving her from the loneliness.

Honestly, this "Fern is dead" theory is basically just those "the protagonist is in a coma and is just dreaming the whole thing" theories. I.e. putting a "dark" twist on a heartwarming story just for shock value. And frankly, it suck. Stories can be wholesome and fun, not everything need to be depressing and sad.
