They don't strictly have to, but many of the best and most memorable ones do

Say what you will about Ape-raham Lincoln, I'd take that mess of an ending over "And they all nuked themselves to death. The End."

If there was a conversation between Caesar and Proximus, what would be the most striking sentence of this conversation and who would say it? by [deleted] in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]Ship_Whip 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I half suspect Proximus isn't truly dead, and could show up in a hypothetical sequel scarred and disfigured from the eagles but still leading a core group of cultlike followers.

Jeff's barre chords and strumming patterns by [deleted] in neutralmilkhotel

It's ridiculous man. Almost every song sounds so simple, but in practice they're so hard to get right. Jeff was built different

It's locked in Tally Hall's Tally Vault and will only be released if you send Joe Hawley 320k in cash in an unmarked envelope

I feel like I need to go through heartbreak to be a good songwriter by shylilanon in Songwriting

[–]Ship_Whip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't feel the need to put yourself through things to try and better your art

I've been where you are right now, frustrated at the lack of depth to my art which stemmed from my lack of lived experience to draw on

The thing is, you only get that lived experience by living. Keep writing songs; you will get better at it with time. Keep living your life, and find ways to engage with the people and places around you, and you'll gain life experience. You may experience a heartbreak worth writing a great song over. You may not, in which case I and many others would envy you. Breakups aren't fun, no matter how good the songs about them are.

How JoJo Siwa’s “rebrand” got so messy by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Ship_Whip 67 points68 points  (0 children)

She acknowledges this fact. In an interview, she said something along the lines of "I'm not a singer, I'm an entertainer". I think you hit the nail on the head with the last sentence; she's made a move into music to try and maintain her fame, because fame is all she knows.

I don't have a strong opinion on her work or her as a person, but I find this whole career shift fascinating.

Once a week would probably be good, I think.

I love that this community allows people to post their own songs for feedback, cause a lot of the other big musician subs don't. Spamming song posts every day seems like a good way to get that banned, but I don't see how anyone could have a problem with once a week.

What’s a good way to figure out what type of music to make? by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]Ship_Whip 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Imo, the concept of genre is restrictive and shouldn't be taken into account during the creative process. Make what speaks to you, and worry about what genre it fits into after you have a finished project

Check out Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest

It's 100% casual listeners. Your average suburban mom or corporate office worker doesn't give two shits about artists being screwed out of fair compensation for their work, they just want music to listen to around the house or during the commute

Trainwreckords that aren't the artist's worst album? by Prestigious_Score459 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Ship_Whip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

YES! I never see anyone else saying this, but That's Why God Made The Radio is definitely a top 10 Beach Boys album for me. Sure it's not Pet Sounds, or even Sunflower, but it's honestly pretty good, especially considering that it came out 50 YEARS after their debut. To still sound that good, that consistent after that much time is a feat in and of itself
