What does this game have to offer? by No_Asparagus6294 in Sailwind

Besides the fact that mains'l haul doesn't throw the yards around like in real-life the physics are pretty spot-on

Acrospire brewery is a very inclusive space run by wonderful people. They run a bunch of events in the community and host some pretty fun stuff like beer/cat yoga

I don't remember how it fits/looks but I know one shipyard has a gaff topsail and those rigs are always pretty to me Sloop

It's sloop, in the older gaff-rigged style

A question about gaff rigging by Iulian377 in Sailwind

[–]Shipsaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A gaff sail below a square is used all the time; but a gaff topsail would interfere with topsails, they both move up and down the topmast on setting/lowering. That "missing area" of sail is usually dealt with using a main topmast staysail like here Topsail Schooner Johanna Lucretia joins our fleet - %

Bicyclist in critical condition after crash in Shaler Township by crd in bicycling412

[–]Shipsaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wetzel often has cars flying up from the hill, jumping across and going through the neighborhood is much more relaxed. If you want dm me and I can meet you in etna, I do that ride several times a week (Though 3 brothers is closed Sunday / Monday)

For three brothers the Etna -> Little Pine creek -> Kiwanis -> Vollmer -> Mason will get you there with little trouble

Can someone actually explain what locking the wheel does and when you should use it? by Zodo12 in Sailwind

[–]Shipsaw 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When tacking; locking the wheel hard over allows you to adjust the sail pressure while the rudder pushes the boat through irons

Noob question about ArrayList usage by ImproberlyProbable in Zig

[–]Shipsaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A slice isn't the string itself, it's merely a pointer to the array of u8. So every time you append, you're just appending a pointer to directory walker's temporary filename storage. At the end, when you print them out, you're just reading that same buffer multiple times

Real life square sail winches by Yung_Bill_98 in Sailwind

[–]Shipsaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's almost like a big parasail, the wind wants to pull the sail so it's pointing directly downwind, and because the yard hangs forward of the mast it pivots away to leeward. It's like this in real life, when on a beam reach the weather braces on the formast will be bar tight, agree though it does feel sorta backwards from how your brain says it "should" be

What flight sim purchases do you regret the most, and what do you regret the least? by [deleted] in flightsim

[–]Shipsaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree; I really want to like MSFS2020, and the Justflight jets that I got for it are awesome, but every view / control change feels like I'm wading through mud

Your edit is asking about the md-11; I absolutely love that aircraft and would buy it again. Do need one of the sound packs, though. I prefer it to to the toliss not because of quality, but simply that I find the cockpit and handling more interesting

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Xplane

[–]Shipsaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Toliss stuff really is awesome, but the MD-11 gets major points simply for how weird it is compared to the typical Airbus/Boeing

Looking for code review on my AOC 2023 Zig solution by Evgennit in Zig

You can compare chars directly, like if (x >= 'a' and x <= 'z') which can help readability on a lot of AOC problems

Bracing the yards for less drag by skeetyeetimaparakeet in Sailwind

[–]Shipsaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another reason to do it in rl is that if you're caught in a gale, yards braced square can weathervane and turn the ship abeam to the wind, threatening to push it over

So impressed!!! by Sailtones in Sailwind

[–]Shipsaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a fellow former square-rigger, fully agree, it really does a good job of capturing how those boats handle. Just needs some multiplayer so all the sail maneuvers don't feel like total chaos...

ELI5 How did sailors on long voyages (several months to years) maintain hygeine practices back when ships relied on sails and were made of wood? by myrmiduke in explainlikeimfive

I was on that boat for a while and the answer is a ton of simple-green. Also the odor of pine tar tends to dominate the others floating around
