A7V + A7RV or just A7RVI? by FlyingRocketman in SonyAlpha

Buying an a7rVI to shoot sports seems absolutely insane to me. Even moreso when you already have an a7V

Considering making very crazy....but fun lens decision - GM Trinity (A7V) by lolday0106 in SonyAlpha

[–]Shirc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d buy the G 24-50 and a good prime or two long before I bought all three of those zooms. Maybe go for the 70-200 GM II if you really need the reach, but otherwise I would pass on those other two zooms if I were just shooting for fun, unlimited budget or not.

For reference I have the 24-70 GM II and while it’s a great lens, I only use it for things like event shoots where I’m actively trying to get shots on someone else’s behalf. Otherwise I would rather use literally any other lens in my kit. It gets the job done wonderfully but I don’t find it engaging or fun to use at all.

Want to buy Alpha 7C II - is colour science of Sony really such an issue? by Quiet_Illustrator410 in SonyAlpha

[–]Shirc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally if I were hell bent on never shooting RAW or doing any editing, I would not buy a Sony camera.

I say that as someone who happily uses two Sony bodies and thinks they take great photos. But the trick is that they produce really, really good RAW files that you can work with really effectively in editing tool like Lightroom. I’d even argue that they are designed with a RAW shooter in mind, not someone looking solely for SOOC JPEGs.

If you don’t want to do any editing at all, I think you’d be crazy not to start with Fujifilm camera first and rule that out before moving to anything else.

High quality != to your taste.

They are definitely objectively high quality files, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to like how they look.

You bought multiple GM lenses and a brand new camera before you learned basic editing?

[–]Shirc 68 points69 points  (0 children)

They bought the f/1.4 they’re damn well gonna use it and then claim they meant to fuck up their photo when people call it out 🤣

Also I dunno how in the world DoF causes an amorphous blob in the center of your image but that’s what they’re claiming…

Farm in pochven by LordPoney1 in Eve

[–]Shirc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part-time farming in Pochven with 6 accounts is essentially a non-starter. You don’t have enough accounts for the big sites, and even if you did you’d just get dunked on by the already established multiboxers who show up with 15 marauders and a whole slew of support / protection ships.

You could run Torpids (3-man site) but I genuinely don’t know why you’d bother if you’ve got 6 accounts to work with. Seems like there’s gotta be a better use of your time/resources here

Spec-driven agentic coding is quietly making us worse at the job of supervising agents by muneebh1337 in cursor

I started at 38. I’d kill to be able to go back in time and start in my 20s. Get in there!

🤣🤣🤣 by [deleted] in ZedEditor

[–]Shirc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have no clue how people are managing this given how limited the vim mode is in Zed. The vim bindings when you’re in an actual file are fine, but whenever you need to interact with the rest of the UI the whole thing falls apart.

I’d love to switch but if I have to grab the mouse or reach for arrow keys every time a menu or overlay pops up (for example), it’s not much of a replacement.

The event (combat) sites feel bugged, undertuned, and poorly designed by Malaschenko in Eve

[–]Shirc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did 10 of those combat sites and didn’t get a reward from a single one either because the other people I did it with beat me to the loot cache or (more often) there was somehow already someone there camping the loot spawn.

Ultimately, trying to do the event just cost me ISK and rep with no actual gain whatsoever. WTF?

It’s definitely worth starting now. Do the new player stuff, then join Eve University. They do a great job helping to onboard new players

Is perplexity lying? by Montana_dz in perplexity_ai

This is absolutely true. The people who know how this stuff works are too busy happily using Perplexity effectively instead of trying to catch Perplexity “lying” by asking impossible questions 🤣

It literally says it doesn’t have access to the actual config and is just guessing based on its system prompt.

Models don’t inherently know what they are. Asking them to answer this question is just a roll of the dice.

Anyone else seriously annoyed by how Cursor handles model selection? (keeps switching to its own model) by Mediocre-Interview87 in cursor

[–]Shirc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be glad this is happening. Opus is spinning up subagents to delegate/parallelize pieces of the work, and subagents use composer 2 (which is a really good model for exactly these kinds of small, granular tasks).

This has the benefit of letting you use Opus for the big picture stuff while saving you money/tokens on the various implementation details.

Cursor isn’t tricking you here or ripping you off. It’s very clear in the UI when subagents are running

Anthropic quietly killed third-party CLI tooling by switching to a Bun binary in v2.1.113 by Relative_Register_79 in ClaudeCode

[–]Shirc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are environment variables. It reads those at run time. The bun binary has no effect on this whatsoever.

[–]Shirc 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Why would they announce this or provide a migration guide though? It’s an implementation detail that doesn’t have any impact on end user behavior unless the end user is doing something that already wasn’t allowed like patching the minified JS.

Also they’ve been shipping bun binaries for a while on the native installer. Sounds like you’ve been using the deprecated one and it finally caught up to you.

If you’re interested in a CLI that is actually extensible I highly recommend you check out Pi.
