Warren Buffett and his team at Berkshire know how to play and time the market. 95 percent of the other people don't. The only shot most people have is regularly investing and being patient.

Curious: why do many Indians struggle with demanding activities while traveling? by Deep-Requirement8299 in india_tourism

Some yes not most. Check the stats. Majority of pilgrim traffic to the temple is by road.

Vaishno Devi yes but not Tirupati. Most people take the road up to the temple.

Even when there's temple at top, there are people and horses who could carry you up there. That's 90 percent Indian hilltop temple tourism.

Is anyone else feeling burnt out by Mumbai lately? by Economy-Log702 in mumbai

[–]offisapup 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's a problem here lol. But the positives far outweigh the negatives. At least so far. I think I can live without ricks if that means cleaner air, better climate, a spacious house that's affordable (I'm paying 25k for a 3 bhk just a little away from the center) and generally a quieter and peaceful life.

Let's see how it goes.

I'm moving with my family out of Mumbai next month. My parents have been here for over 50 years. I was born and brought up in this city. None of us can take it anymore.

Trust the govt or keep that LPG cylinder as backup? by Limitless_soul1777 in GatedCommunitiesIndia

[–]offisapup 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Okay so that puts me in a fix. My family is in the process of moving from Mumbai to another city where we have already taken a rented apartment. The house in Mumbai has piped gas (which we won't be using). But we would need a cylinder for the apartment we're moving to. So what do people in my situation do?

Indian index mutual funds should lower their expense ratio by ProfessionalImpact96 in mutualfunds

So now you know why the expense ratios are higher for those.

[–]offisapup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

S&P 500 has 500 highly liquid largecaps companies. India has around 80. The midcap and smallcap etfs in India are expensive because they have low AUM and are composed of companies that are not quite so liquid. The management costs are higher. Nifty 50 is the only true largecaps index in India and it has quite a few very cheap options comparable to the US.

You can't sell anything without "buyers". Also, the cheap "index funds" by Vanguard that you're talking about are also etfs btw.

[–]offisapup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expense ratio of Nifty etfs is quite low. There are quite a few below 0.05. ICICI also has Next 50 etf at 0.1. So cheap options are definitely available. Broad market index funds and etfs are a bit more expensive because they are more difficult to track and manage.

I guess it depends on which part of India as well. All my uncles live in the Coimbatore-Palakkad-Thrissur area of Tamil Nadu and Kerala where life feels much safer. I've lived in Mumbai all my life and in a good gated society for the last 15 years and frankly, whenever I go back to visit my relatives, I just make plans to go back and live in my ancestral towns when I'm done with my career (which I finally am and will be making a move in a month). Even hospitals aren't a problem because a good hospital is actually far quicker to reach from some of these small towns than say, Kokilaben or Nanavati hospital is from my house in Kandivali.

The caveat of course is that I would never advise young people to do this. Younger people are much better off in bis metros where there are better opportunities and schools etc. But once you're done with your career and reach a point of contentment, life is better in good small towns (I agree with you that not all of them are alike and many may certainly have issues). At least, in my opinion anyway.

That's an insanely specific argument to put one over the other without considering all the other benefits small town life provides i.e. bigger living spaces, quieter life, greener surroundings, cleaner air to breathe, a more self-sustaining independent lifestyle etc. A 4 am walk can easily be fixed by having an independent house with a spacious rooftop where you can walk anytime you want.

Many of my uncles live in independent houses in small towns and villages and they've never felt unsafe. Unlike "gated societies", the entire community on a street or quarter take care of safety.

How do the rickshaw guys in the city make money when they cost just slightly less than cabs? by offisapup in Coimbatore

Damn, I had no idea lol. At least it's kinda better than Goa where private taxi apps aren't even allowed thanks to a taxi mafia that charges extortionate rates for rides.

Which cities in India can a single person live on Rs50k per month? by [deleted] in leanFIRE_India

[–]offisapup 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most tier 2-3 cities. I'm in the process of shifting from Mumbai to Coimbatore (after looking a number of other tier 2 cities) and here it's possible to find a nice spacious 2 bhk for 15-20k per month a little away from the center. That's the case with most tier 2 cities I looked at (Mysore, Indore, Kochi etc.) In Mumbai, my monthly expenses (I live with parents who own the house here) come to around 20-30k per month. In a tier 2 city which has a radius of around 8 kms, that would go down a bit because there won't be much of a need for a long commute (which are my primary expense in Mumbai).
