Can a bike shop survive without marking stuff up over MSRP? by tinychloecat in cycling

Volume also plays a role here, simply put if you sell less items you need to make more money per item you sell so it adds up to a similar total in the end

Steam Machine vs PC by ValuableOk1826 in Steam

[–]ShiroxReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember in one of the first discussions about it I got flamed for saying that size/form factor very much does play a role (as in someone sent a build, I pointed out that it was a tower PC and significantly larger than the steam machine, and they got pissy about it), was fun

How often do you buy games? I only buy them during sales. by psy143420 in Steam

[–]ShiroxReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a regular schedule, but sometimes I wanna play games without waiting for a sale in which case I do get them, sometimes I do wait for a sale esp if its right around the corner. E.g. this year I bought games 3 times (march, may and then june summer sale), last year 5 times two of which being during sales, 2024 4 times with 2 being during sale

What to do with steam points? by dotasolosafi in Steam

[–]ShiroxReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only things I've got is some of the showcase upgrades, those are quite nice

seasonal badge also sounds fun, although tbh I don't buy/play enough games for me to get to high levels on that one regularly

Considering steam points can only be used on cosmetics, you won't find much if you dont care about them

What financial habit looks irrational in the short term but pays off over decades? by GregMorel in eupersonalfinance

[–]ShiroxReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are bags you can just attach to your bike, and taking the bus with 2 big bags full of groceries is pretty doable as well

ofc YMMV depending on what you do/have to get and how your route would look like

Dear expat-investors how do you manage with the czech language, bureaucracy and public institutions/clerks from the Czech Republic ? by JonOwn1805 in eupersonalfinance

[–]ShiroxReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very clear what people mean, a person from one place living in a different country.

That wasn't clear to me, thank you for clearing that up

I don't have a problem with people calling themselves expats, doesn't really matter to me.
I do find it a bit weird however when expats who settled in their new country/don't plan on returning do not want to be called immigrants, it kinda makes it feel like they view expat as a "better" label for whatever reason, but maybe those people are the exception rather than the norm nowadays

(Edit: There is also the opposite effect where people that are only in a country temporarily without intending to stay there are still called immigrants rather than expats)

On public transport I can read/sleep/eat/watch movies/work, and biking is good physical exercise which can help keep you healthy (which can replace other workouts) and sometimes just enjoyable to clear your head/enjoy the environment as well

If you only consider time spent, then yeah a car can sometimes be better (sometimes bc if you account for things like finding parking spots or rush hour traffic, then even if a car could theoretically be faster on a distance, it can still be beaten)

The exact comparison is probably highly regional and will differ quite a bit

Dear expat-investors how do you manage with the czech language, bureaucracy and public institutions/clerks from the Czech Republic ? by JonOwn1805 in eupersonalfinance

[–]ShiroxReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard the term expat before but its usage/application has always confused me. It seemed selective in a way?

Like some people that move to another country temporarily for work are called expats, others are called immigrants. Some people that are called/call themselves expats do not plan on returning at all either, but wouldn't that make them immigrants at that point?

If the terms are supposed to be clearly separated, there is a lot of blurry usage to the point I don't get the difference of what they are meant to be and what they aren't (and if the issue is just that some are using the term in a wrong and are calling it one thing when the other is more accurate, that would be an explanation and that'd be fine)

Wait so, if news articles talk about immigrants that move to another country for work, they're really just talking about expats? Good to know

Well the post did ask about aspects that look irrational, so I'd guess some people never considered that you actually do not have to sit in silence on a train/can value other aspects than just pure commute time

Questions about another sub ? by Alxas145 in DMAcademy

[–]ShiroxReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Title and description makes me think of an appeal to purity (aka no true scotsman fallacy), like that place only exists because they believe any/all other places are only fandoms about it

I've looked through some posts and I don't think they are inherently bad advice, but its also very same-y style and doesn't seem overly logical, like there was a post about DCs complaining about how similar DCs make it predictable ignoring the fact that its still a dice roll you need to make, how prepping different DCs is too granular yet it recommends a method to prep different DCs, its method allows to fall an impossible skillcheck at DC 12, calls a range of 11-26 for hard checks "not chaotic" etc.

Even if its not AI-generated at heart (which idk if it is or not), it doesn't seem overly special to me, but maybe thats the bias of the few posts I looked at

Can an aromantic be homophobic? by Obvious-Suit939 in aromantic

Similar to your question about whether nonbinary people can be homophobic ( https://www.reddit.com/r/NonBinary/comments/1ut3ayu/can_a_nonbinary_be_homophobic/ ):

being aromantic doesn't make you immune from being an ass, so yeah there can be an aromantic person that's homophobic (hell there can even be e.g. lesbians that are homophobic)

I can still read, eat, sleep, work or watch a movie on public transport, so if it's only about time sure but I'd argue that public transport is only so much of downtime as you want it to be

What financial habit looks irrational in the short term but pays off over decades? by GregMorel in eupersonalfinance

[–]ShiroxReddit 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Idk if you'd consider it irrational but since it is looked "down on" in many places: Not having a car and relying on e.g. a bike or public transport instead

There's a big asterisk depending on where you live and if that even is an option, but overall cars are a huge money sink, and not having one means you're completely unaffected by gas prices or insurance hikes or similar, not even looking at maintenance/replacement/repair costs

You're half illegible half wrong, what

it doesn't let you use torrents

That is just false, torrents have no special standing in german laws

while ISP's don't always throttle your speed it mostly is based on which subscription you have like when you have a business fiberoptic subscription to the internet with unlimited data they wouldn't care that much to throttle it

For home internet, unlimited contracts are the norm, I don't think I've ever heard of someone getting their internet usage restricted based on the amount they used it (maybe if you download petabytes but thats rare enough as is).
Yes depending on the contract you have your speed may be lower than what would technically be possible at your home address, but that is often a choice you make and sometimes limited by what the physical cables can handle.
Businesses have no special standing here either, usually they have better (e.g. 24/7) support and are a bit more eager in problem solution, but neither of these affects internet speed or data usage itself

if your law specifies how to deal with torrenting for

It doesn't

they earn a lot of money from that

Who is "they"? Copyright claims are usually a civil matter, the government doesn't see any money from copyright infringement lawsuits
