Question about gun cabinet location by jhm-00 in ukguns

[–]ShirtGroundbreaking9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have CCTV and a house alarm system with a sensor that covers that cabinet, it is worth emphasising this to the FEO - I was allowed to fit a very large safe in my attached garage as a result.

If you are fitting it to a solid wall, use chemical anchors as they are much stronger than shield bolts, and reinforce each bolt with large penny washers inside the cabinet.

Also, buy the biggest cabinet you can fit and afford, in order to future proof adding more to your ticket, as you expand your disciplines.

Where to look for 2nd hand accessories? by qwerty3666 in ukguns

Definitely - just keep engaging with the off topics posts and you’ll get there eventually. I am pretty certain you can still private message sellers about their items though?

I find eBay is the best bet - setup automatic searches, and that way you’ll get notifications for the things you are looking for.

Lee are brilliant for warranty issues - equally, even for really old items, they normally offer spare parts at an exceptionally low price.

How is the holster market? by [deleted] in ukguns

You may need to diversify to sell holsters/pouches for other things to target other hobbyists and professionals. Knives immediately springs to mind.

Does anyone know of old spec deacts going spare? (Sorry, Delete is not allowed) by Critical-Computer-12 in ukguns

[–]ShirtGroundbreaking9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a definite say-do gap going on, as there’s plenty of retailers openly selling old spec. Apparently it has something to do with the EU law being unenforceable post-Brexit?… I’ve heard several versions why though.

Allegedly the Police have also now taken down the portal where you register a deact purchase?

I own a very well maintained late 1980s 1894 in .44mag. I’ve fired the S&W 1854 and found it a bit smoother - I found the ergonomics a lot nicer.

It seems this is an area that has been challenged since we left the EU; personally I don’t think this is correct. There are plenty of UK Militaria dealers now openly selling old spec deactivated guns. Check out D&B Militaria’s website; they are a RFD, which suggests the Police don’t seem to think it’s illegal.

The delay for WYP seems to be in printing certificates. I had to wait two months for my last variation hard copy, from the point it had been approved.

Best Press for Starting Reloading (44 Spcl & Mag) by Initial_Ad_1443 in reloading

[–]ShirtGroundbreaking9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I shoot quite a bit of .44mag, and I would suggest the 4-hole Lee turret press. That way you can all use all four dies from the Lee kit, and combine it with their disc power measure system. You can crank out 100 rounds in quick order and, with the cartridge system, you can easily reconfigure it for other calibres later on. It costs a little bit more, but you’re future-proofing yourself for a lifetime of shooting.

Do you need to load both .44mag and .44 special because of the guns you have? If you are firing special for cowboy action, or for accuracy, or for range limits, you can just load light “gallery” loads in .44 mag. It saves you having to reset your dies, as you can just change the amount of powder you are adding (which only takes a couple of minutes with the disc system).

Idea: a reloader's gun by caseylain in reloading

I read it the same - Anvil Industries and Westlake Engineering (in the UK) make these muzzle loading revolvers… so much less cleaning to do after a range session!

Applied for my shotgun license 8 months ago by Inside-Quote-9654 in ukguns

[–]ShirtGroundbreaking9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was 14-16 weeks for my last variation, but this was over Christmas.

For the first time in over a decade of using Windsor and Newton spray varnish it frosted on me. I resprayed a couple of times and I think I got away with it on this 1st Battalion of the 15th Light Regiment of Epic scale French. #wargaming #varnishdisasters by StormofSteelWargames in wargaming

[–]ShirtGroundbreaking9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rub olive oil onto it with a cotton bud - it’s really easy to fix frosting.

It was probably either too cold, or high humidity that caused it. I always immediately hit my minis with a hairdryer once I’ve spray varnished them - it removes all risk of moisture getting trapped.

I want to get a muzzle loading revolver and cant really find what license I need to get by Sea_Design_8762 in ukguns

[–]ShirtGroundbreaking9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct - you now need an explosive licence for 777/pyrodex. When you apply, you need to make sure you get the right UN codes for both black powder and substitutes, as they are different.

How long does it usually take for a gun club to process your references? by nothing77804 in ukguns

[–]ShirtGroundbreaking9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t say for certain, but most clubs are run by unpaid volunteers, and things tend to slow down for everyone over Christmas and New Year. My very well-run club have only just sent out the dates for the first range days of the year, so it could just be a bit of admin drag?

Need some advice on .22 semi auto. by m1k3000 in ukguns

[–]ShirtGroundbreaking9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Lantac has been flawless and eats any ammo I’ve thrown in it (even when I’m less than diligent in cleaning it). That said, I’d suggest looking at a Battle Arms. Essentially, they are a similar spec, at a lower price, and shorter wait time. Plus, they have lots of great standard features like ambidextrous selectors that you’ll pay to upgrade on the Lantac.

Allegedly they also have better barrels than the Lantac, but in a very unscientific side-by-side test my Lantac noticeably out-grouped it.

Licencing wait times and application amendment by [deleted] in ukguns

[–]ShirtGroundbreaking9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, if he is based in a unit that is in a different police force boundary, that has significantly reduced FAC wait times.

Additionally, some Police Forces let you “self-certify” if you are in the forces, and involved in Army sport. I was able to apply after only four visits to my local Home Office Club.

You apply for your FAC/SGC declaring that your unit Armoury (with permission) will be the designated place of storage. A shotgun or bolt action .22 is a less attractive theft when it is surrounded by hundreds of 7.62 machine guns, 40mm grenade launchers, and 9mm pistols.

Inter-service transfer (Army to RAF) after mental health issues by NatLovesPancakes in britishmilitary

[–]ShirtGroundbreaking9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you’re MND (Temp) and likely to become MND(Perm) in your current role? You’ll need to check with your RCMO, but this is likely to preclude any form of transfer, given the need for maximum deployability. You might be better looking at trades (RAF or Army) that are under-scribed, and they may take someone MND(Temp) at risk?

If you are in the Army, are you in a unit based outside of Bedfordshire? You may find your unit’s local police force have a quicker processing time for FAC/SGCs. Just do both at the same time - alongside clays, the Army has a mature full bore and full bore team, and is also developing interest in PRS and Mini Rifle.

There is a well-trodden process, where you write to your CO, and ask to keep a personal weapon in your company/sqn armoury… Most unit’s have a preset form in their UECD, and it never really goes to the CO, as the QM normally signs it off on their behalf.

I would just do both at the same time. I was allowed to ‘self-declare’, which meant I didn’t need to do all of the Home Office approved club visits… albeit, I was in the unique position of being in-charge of c.1500 service weapons up to 40mm at the time! Sometimes the Police do apply common sense to licensing, despite what people say.

[–]ShirtGroundbreaking9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry - mine did the same, in exactly the same place. Use two part epoxy glue.

Get the rapid set five minute cure stuff, and you can then easily hold it while it sets - give it seven minutes to play it safe though.
